I actually think Yahtzee has mellowed out considerably over the last few years and his videos are significantly better as a result. Less relentless criticism that feels forced abd more balanced genuine critique and balanced impressions from someone with particular tastes. Problem though us when he just doesn't really like games like Shadow Gens but doesn't think they are terrible either he doesn't have much of value to say. But imagine what he would have said about this ten years ago.

The tone was because the blinders being put on were honestly kind of embarrassing even with the allusions to self awareness. Me and Yahtzee have a lot more crossover in what we're playing week to week so when I say he literally does this all the time I'm not exaggerating. Sonic fans are like Nintendo fans in that they're on an "island"and thus don't realize this is what's going on, so they act like they got singled out. I've always hated this and the fandom's general bullied kid routine it whips out whenever Sonic doesn't review well.

The 'chip on the shoulder' era of Sonic fandom might finally be wrapping up now that reviewers are starting to give these games the same participatory 8s and 9s the other publishers get and it can't come soon enough.

i generally agree, and yeah - as others have said this is what happens when he thinks a game is mid but in a sort of unremarkable way. he's got his specializations (immersive sims, survival horror, soulslikes, whatever weird indie thing he's picked up during the slow period) but when he's doing basically anything outside of his comfort zone you can immediately tell because he burns huge portions of the video runtime doing mostly off-topic, largely unfunny gags.

he clearly did not have the tools or background to evaluate shadow gens, but he could at least tell it wasn't obviously bad like some other sonic releases so he couldn't rip into it in the way he'd like to, so he just kind of... meanders for five minutes. he probably wouldn't have done the review at all if it wasn't such a high-profile release that was guaranteed to get clicks - in part because of it's unusually positive critical reception.

yahtzee is just not the guy i'd go to for my opinions about speed-focused platformers. iirc he didn't finish pizza tower because he was too stressed by the fact that the levels were too fast-paced and also had collectables in them, which is the exact same critique that he made of the boost games in this latest review.

It seems like a lot of this is founded in stuff way outside the purview of me specifically. I haven't believed in secret conspiracy goblin reviewers who hate Sonic or whatever in years. Again, I like Yahtzee and now having rewatched them, I would even concede that most of his other Sonic videos are better than the last couple, and plenty of times I've liked a game he didn't, I haven't gotten this same vibe. I mean, even in the Street Fighter 6 example, the single-player campaign was at least a part of the game that was there to be played, rather than just the abstract concept of part of it that's simply existed for 25 years (or indeed a concept he invented? I've never seen him do that "premium currency" logic leap for any other game). I think you might as well argue that nobody can ever judge him for anything if it's that unfair for me to negatively compare this one to his other Sonic reviews. If you're saying in all of this that this is simply a problem that's not specific to Sonic, then sure, I'm not going to contradict that? All that tells me is that he has it in him to either do better for other series or ignore them, too.

I thought Yahtzee was really funny when I was like, 19 or 20. After over a decade of not watching his stuff I checked out one of his recent videos a couple weeks ago, and it was the same exact shtick and I just found it deeply boring and no longer for me. A real "wow, he's still just doing this?" moment. But if it didn't work and people didn't like it he wouldn't still be doing it, so more power to him I guess.

Honestly I'm just so tired of that brand of cynicism these days. People like him can never enjoy anything.

The game is an exploration of Shadow as a character. There is almost nothing to this game that hasn't been in other modern Sonic games besides the exploration of Shadow's character. The game puts Shadow's character front and center within seconds of booting up. The improved wisp powers and revised controls might be remarkable to some, but I'd argue that for the layman coming off of Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations it isn't, so of course he talks about Shadow's character.

"He should do better." Or you should watch something of substance if you want something of substance. That's my real point. Critique is only worth so much if it discounts the intent and parameter's of something existence. There are a lot hardcore sonic faithful dissecting this game for you to watch instead and some of them even get more views than Fully Ramblomatic at this point.

Yes, I know how to ignore things I don't like, thanks. Is it really that big a deal to post about a thing I do like not being as good as I'm used to? I said it doesn't matter, and it still doesn't, but you're being really weird about this.

Yeah, cause speaking for myself, even if someone has very different opinions and thoughts on something than mine, or maybe doesn't have the knowledge or language to provide me with something of "substance", I would still like to consider their perspective and hear their thoughts?
I don't watch yahtzee, but I think it's fair to be a bit annoyed with how he approaches things he obviously doesn't like.

Does anyone else remember that cringey "Sonic doesn't need a story" song?

I don't know much about the guy who made it and I only mention it because it's a good snapshot of what the commonly held opinion on Sonic was back in 2008-2012. Yahtzee strikes me as the perfect avatar for a guy who's permanently stuck in that era, so much that in his review of SxSG he literally jokes about how he thought Generations was still a recent game.

I don't think it's anything to lose sleep over really, yahtzee's videos are more entertainment than actual review. It'd be like going to CinemaSins and expecting thoughtful film critique.

  13. Same. I stopped this video about 2 mins in. Yahtzee was funny about a decade ago, but this feels very stuck in the past. His formula and his approach with the Sonic games. The Shadow could be possibly somebody's OC and he's emo jokes are so cringe-y and embarrassing.

tl;dr - Yahtzee doesn't like 3D Sonic games not because they're objectively bad, but because he's just not personally into their gameplay, and he says as much. That's perfectly fine. We know from the sales a crap ton of people do. Meanwhile, he reminds the rest of us how absurd everything else about this franchise is because sometimes it's fun to point it out.

I slightly chucked, but that's it. The franchise has moved on and is objectively a success now. We really don't need to take it too seriously one way or another.

This same guy also made a song about how Pokemon shouldn't have gone past gen 1, so he's THAT type of person.

Yeah, TGA is a sham anyway, especially the farce that was last year's. The show very quickly stopped being about genuine celebration of developers, their craft and their stories, instead becoming focused on shilling the recent and future releases of whoever slides Keighly the biggest cheque under the table. It's an insult to those it claims to champion, orchestrated by cynical corpos and enabled by gratification-centric gamer culture.

Not just the last year's farce. I'm still not over how Frontiers lost to a 2020 gacha game which shouldn't even have been nominated in friggin 2022.
