Imagine if film buffs were saying that erasing Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho from the public consciousness is acceptable because we have the shot-for-shot remake from 1998

Your copy of Sonic Generations isn't disappearing so that's a moot point. If you have it, you... still have it. Untouched.

New players now have a limited, rather inconvenient window to buy an old game in its original, untouched form while there is a newer version of the game that almost exactly the same as the original.

For the vast majority of people, this is not really an issue--most new players would be tempted to buy the new game anyway for those handful of changes and the entirely new content it comes with, and players who want the old game will go through more hoops than normal but it's still rather easy to obtain.

In terms of preservation, the original game still exists.

This is not the most ideal setting, which is just simply leaving it alone to begin with, but considering other examples including from Sega, it's pretty good. I did not expect ANY method to buy the original game, and I felt the need to, I wouldn't mind buying a bundle with Sonic Unleashed or whatever to get it on my Xbox (if i had one).

Hey man, you can still get the original version from a $200 bundle from Criterion collection. It's no big deal, just wait for a sale.

Good thing this is not a remake though, and the original game still available anyway.

Or you can just buy the physical copy for $15 because it's not like Psycho, I'm sorry, Sonic Generations is a rare game to find.

No shit, Sherlock. It was a hypothetical question to underline the absurdity of "you've had 13 years".

No, responding to a specific point doesn't mean I'm "selectively ignoring" the points I'm not specifically responding to, actually.

You're the one who said "fans had 13 years" as if the thing they had 13 years to do (buying the game by itself directly through Steam) was important and valuable to be able to do. My point (which was selectively ignored) was that you're leaving fans who didn't have/won't have had those 13 years out of the conversation. That's it.

You all need hobbies if the news of still being able to buy the original version of a game legally after an updated rerelease that is the exact same game but with updated textures and higher framerate angers you.

Last i saw it regularly goes for like $20 when on sale not counting nay discounts from owning anything in the bundle already. And its like, several times a year often. I think if the couldnt convince the suits to just bundle it in with the remaster, this is probably the next best thing

There's nothing absurd about that. It's been 13 years. It's been discounted for as little as $1 (that's how I got it on Steam).

It will be available in its original form as a physical release and as part of digital bundles which will always been more expensive than just getting it on its own but $200 bundles are an extremely outlier.

The cheapest and most convenient alternative is the re-release where the game is almost identical to how it was originally.

People who already have it have literally nothing to worry about.

The amount of fans who want Sonic Generations but waited through 13 years and several major discounts but are specifically walled off by the decision to make the game only available through bundles is very, very, very ,very, very small. So small that it's surprised that Sega did this shit in the first place. So that's nice. Nice business decision.

I'd like to point out a missing detail with this $200 bundle.

Doesn't Steam remove the price of any games you already own in a bundle? So you'd essentially just be buying the games you don't already have?

I'm honestly confused by the response to this. It's definitely not the perfect solution, I would've preferred an Ori setup, but the game will still be easily obtainable. Plus, it goes on sale for over 50% off basically every other month, so... I'm having a hard time being upset at this outcome.

Alright, well how about this: the Star Wars Special Editions. Most people agree they're shit, and have been arguing for the originals to be preserved instead. But it's the same movie, with the same actors, just with new visuals and additional scenes...not unlike SXSG. People have been constantly begging for a release of the original theatrical editions, but...you had 20 years to see the originals in theaters! Sucks to be you. Stop whining, it's just the same movie, but better, right?

Or how about Star Trek? 60s special effects being replaced by new CGI in 2006. Same series, but with "updated visuals". Sure, the blurays allow you to switch between them, but streaming doesn't, and what happens when the blurays go out of print? Oh well, you had over 15 years to buy them, so...sucks to be you.

You people don't give a shit about preservation. You don't give a shit about video games as an art form. And that'd be a lot easier to stomach if you weren't pretending to be an ally on the side of it all the time. If 13 years worth of mods weren't at stake here, you wouldn't give a shit about whether the original Generations was delisted or not.

Why is this conversation about preservation when the original game will still be purchasable even on digital storefronts

When the physical game is cheap as hell on Amazon and eBay

When its already been pirated to shit

When the new release is changed so little from the original that people don't even think it's a remaster

Sega isn't even going to break the mods

Not to detract from your point, but the original version of TOS is still available as an option on Paramount+. I get the two mixed up all the time.

As to your point itself, can we please stop with the aggression? Not to speak for them, but I'm pretty sure the comment was not meant as a personal attack, nor should it be taken as such.

Calm down man you could still buy a 7th gen console and the original game at a really cheap price. You shouldn't be genuienly angry at crap like this at your age anyways that's just immature.

  16. This would probably be an issue if the Sonic series didn't regularly have steep discounts through Steam and third-party sites. And to be honest, the people willing to buy an old version of a game for the sole purpose of modding would likely be buying a bunch of other Sonic games on Steam anyways. As long as I can re-download it then idc

Also one thing I'm very curious about is if the "Sonic Generations Collection" counts as a bundle.

Because even though it's the game + the Casino Night DLC, it's consistently treated like a bundle.

So if it does count, then the game virtually won't be delisted from Steam at all.

I can confirm this myself, I own virtually everything on that bundle except 4 games and I get a reduced price for it. Combine that with discounts and it goes even lower. I think this is very reasonable all things considered.

It's not what I hoped for but the bundle isn't that expensive, it goes on sale all the time and the remaster doesn't seem worse in any way unlike Sonic Colors Ultimate. With some luck it might even be better if they can make the PC port competent this time around.

Sonadow Gens is, outside of its lack of mods, objectively the best version. I just can't bring it in me to care.

The plot is being lost again.

Yes, preservation and documentation for the original version of a significant game is important. But if you're saying that buyability alone is preservation, this does that. Annoyed as I may be, this is now a niche purchase where the new version is not going to significantly alter the game. Mod enthusiasts who never owned the original will have some hoops to jump through, but the experience of new players who just want to play isn't being radically-altered. It's more like if Lucas's remasters were just a color correction. The fact that it's annoying to get would matter even less if it didn't have moddability going for it. The end goal of preservation is not to keep mint pristine copies available of every version of every line of code ever written. It would be literally impossible (and often pointless), which means we have to make value judgements about what to preserve and why. And no, dubs, you don't have to act like a psychotic screeching freak to every person you talk to in order to do that.

This is all assuming that "the game being buyable on a digital store" is even what preservation means. If we're just talking about the ability for some rando to play the game, storefronts don't matter, the files exist in dozens, hundreds of places online. If that's not enough, then you'd probably need some kind of legislation passed to protect pirates, otherwise you're just harassing people in an internet forum for a game that is exactly as at-risk as every other game ever made.
