So it can't have a same boss fight with a role swap trope.

A Sonic boss fight would be boring. There are at least 14 bosses involving Shadow from elsewhere in the series to choose from. Honestly, I would've preferred the Biolizard not even show up. It was already on 3DS (which nobody played, but still).

Why not? That doesn't sound like fun, we can totally have (almost) the same boss fight if it has already happened. It would serve as a conflictingly solid parallel to how we experience SA2... Plus, I want to have the chance to pummel Sonic's blue furry butt into the pavement.

(Edit: Not replying to Dubs, we just happened to post at the same time.)

Sounds like the Shadow Generations story starts before Sonic Generations, explains how Sonic and Shadow met in Whitespace, maybe shows the fight in a cutscene, then continues and shows what happened after Sonic Generations. Maybe we see how the Eggmans escape White Space after the Time Eater is defeated.

I'm expecting expanded Time Eater Lore.

Also, I'm gonna bet that Maria shows up in White Space. It's too good of an opportunity to pass up. They'll just make it clear that Shadow's happy to see her, but not OVERWHELMED by it since he's "no longer defined by his past" (despite this game being a total retread of his past, but I digress. LOL)

Overall, I think this looks really solid. If this hits home I'll be quite optimistic about the future output from Sonic Team.

    October better come fast.

  5. I think people are misreading - the Sonic Team’s response says the story takes place before and after Shadow’s appearance in Gens, not before and after all of Generations. In another answer they explicitly say it runs parallel to Sonic’s story. It will be interesting to see how Shadow’s original boss fight is contextualized in his story, since the pretense for his battle was so flimsy.

Why not? if done right it can be good or even great, DMC5 is a great example, the Vergil DLC had the final boss be Dante himself, and it was great, one of the best boss battles in the game/series, simply cause they made Dante plays like a real player, going ham on you and Royal Guarding you and all that, plus the great full theme of Bury the Light playing there

Plus not like Sonic Team are immune to that trope, Adventure games/heroes,06 all had it , they can do it, and if they made it distinct enough all the better, but there is no reason that they won't do it, at worse it would be a harmless fast boss fight and a bit of additional content that won't get in the way, at best they make it distinct enough and provide a new perspective

I’m going to be blunt: this is the most excited and “wowed” by the production value I’ve been since Sonic Unleashed (360/PS3). The level design’s better than Unleashed so far, yet has a very similar level of cool cinematics. I don’t think people remember. This ark level is around the level of Eggmanland in terms of paths, I think. I’m into it.

I always thought that the Shadow you fought in Generations was pulled from Adventure 2's timeline which is why he was so ready to beat the shit out of Sonic

This was clearly the intention in the original game (Just like the Death Egg Robot, Silver and Egg Dragoon fights), but I would not be surprised if they retcon it into him being the present-day Shadow.

Of course, that would raise a shit ton of questions in regards to the fights against Silver and both Eggmen, none of which will probably ever be answered.

Silver in Generations isn't 06 Silver iirc. His dialogue says something about him thinking Sonic is a fake trying to steal the Chaos Emeralds.

  11. 06 is the only time Shadow was playable when you didn't have a Sonic boss fight, so it wouldn't be out of place to have one here, especially to parallel the Shadow boss fight that's already present in Generations.

I don't know how how you'd meaningfully differentiate it tho and just doing the same fight again but with Shadow would be a little lazy.

making cool music no one gives a shit about
My general feeling is the same. This is the most excited I've been for a new 3D Sonic game since Unleashed, and it's a damn side dish. But hopefully it's actually an appetizer for what's coming next.

Sonic Forces is already a joke, and when the relevant part is relegated to DLC, it's even more of a joke. :)

That DLC had more boxes than an Amazon warehouse. It was definitely a joke.

Are we counting Lancelot as Shadow?

  18. I think the intention was that Shadow and Silver are both from Sonic’s present rather than being pulled from their debut games. Shadow’s dialogue pre-fight is just about how he wants to beat Sonic (i.e. his controversial modern characterization), and Silver knows Sonic but worries he may be a copy (for some reason). Both support Sonic before the Time Eater fight, and attend Sonic’s party in the present.

I was under the impression all of the bosses took place in the present, since both Silver and Egg Dragoon both take place in a completely different circumstance than the original fights, along with the pre-fight dialogue for the rivals suggesting that as well.

  20. Yes, you are.

But I was mostly counting the games he isn't DLC.

I guess you can count this. Granted, none of those characters have playable bosses.

But yea, Sonic boss fight pls
