Sonic X Shadow Generations announced, releases Autumn 2024

Sonic & Tails predates Sonic & Knuckles and has a sequel.

 

That’s rather a false equivalence, given that this refers specifically to the Japanese titles of two relatively obscure 8-bit games, as opposed to “& Knuckles” being more of a reference to overly long game titles and the general 90s majesty that was the tower of power that created Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles.

 

similarly, Monster Hunter Generations is called Monster Hunter Cross (X) in Japan too. In Pokemon Black/White/Black 2/White 2, you have a key item called the crosstransceiver that is rendered in-game as xtransceiver, presumably due to character limits (this is an interesting example of an EN localization doing this exclusively; this item is just called the "Live Caster" in JP).

 

Here's a less false equivalence then:

Funnily enough, in this case, the title being too complex to remember later is a blessing in disguise. Imagine a child and/or parent searching for that text online, especially if explicit filters are disabled...

 

it's because it's a package of sonic generations and shadow generations
i guess the title would've been better conveyed as sonic/shadow generations, though you can still argue that's a ship name

 

It's funny how deep and intricate the conversations about this title are on this forum but when I talk to people irl or who aren't deep in the community they're mostly like

"That new Shadow game looks rad. Can't wait to play it."

I've yet to meet any of the more casual fans who are hung up on this name.

 

I heard some kid in the local game store simply call it Sonic & Shadow, so to stay hip with the youth that’s what I’ll be referring to it as.

 

Yep, Sonic and Shadow Generations will be my pronunciation of the title too, as it feels natural to say that way, but honestly, I’m leaning towards how much the casual fans care about the title.

 

Maybe it’s like HUNTER X HUNTER where the X is left unspoken. However, Sonic Shadow Generations is a bit inelegant, so I feel like it could roll off the tongue better by contracting it to Sonadow Generations.

 

I feel like no one in the world can agree how "Thing x Other Thing" is meant to be pronounced. I think in Japan it was originally meant to be "cross" because it implied a crossover of brands or something. Most people in the west literally just pronounce it as "ex". Then you have stuff like Hunter x Hunter and Godzilla x Kong where the X isn't supposed to be pronounced at all.

One thing's for sure, if they make a new Mario and Sonic crossover series it'll 100% be called "Mario x Sonic"

 

I can't find any footage of actual Sega employees pronouncing it, but I have found two YouTube videos from Japanese creators where it is pronounced as just "Sonic Shadow Generations," similarly to Hunter X Hunter.

I went through the SEGASAMMY YouTube for the video presentations of recent IR reports and they didn't say the name even when it appeared in the text. Nothing on the Sega channel either. Maybe there is some mention of it in the JP Sonic YouTube within this series of videos, , but I haven't seen anything so far by skimming.

Yeah, bundled in with a bunch of other Game Gear titles. I'd wager most casuals still wouldn't really be able to remember Sonic Chaos if brought up in conversation, and they're even less likely to know it's called Sonic & Tails in Japan, while the "& Knuckles" gag is likely more relevant in the west. Granted, it's kind of silly to split hairs over it. I think the only explanation we need is the one that legendary animator once gave:

"The X makes it sound cool."

 

I'm going to keep calling it Sonic X Shadow's Oiled-Up Twerk-Off Generations until the day I die and nobody can fucking stop me
