The original PC version of Generations also has a broken wall-jump that doesn’t slide downwards. Was that ever fixed?

You know what, i just got reminded of a whole thing, the PC version was indeed difficult to run for laptops basically, and we talking about gaming/powerful laptops , back in the day you had to do a whole thing, cause it at first detect the default/intel graphics card instead of automatically picking up the Nvidia GPU, no other game did it like that really, you had to go to NVIDIA settings itself, mess with a couple of settings, and also have to tinker with display settings -which makes invisible screen to your monitor so your mouse can go "out of border" for another invisible screen to the right, a setting for multiple monitors

All that is to say, yeah the original game indeed had issues even launching on certain computers, there was a sticky thread on SEGA forums about this issue iirc , i did experience this personally , it's easy to forget about it with years of mods and fixes, it was in no way optimized PC port however

  4. Since the game was released on physical media for both the PS3, 360, and even the PC and digital. The preservation of the game is a complete non-issue

It does matter what era you were born in, just look at how silly the prices are for Pal Mega CD games or many older Sega Saturn titles never mind those of us who had the joy of playing Sonic on a SEGA console or seeing AM#3 make Sonic the Arcade game, those days are all long gone What year one is born can affect your gaming and what IP's you choose to get into and if you were born later it can be far harder and also far more expensive to source some of the older IP's

If Sonic Team and Sonic Gen was a game made like Half-Life that supported and welcomed the modding community then fair enough, but Sonic Team or engines have never been made with that in mind, so modding is a bit of a moot point for me. I'll be more upset with SEGA/Sonic Team if they went after the modding community like Rockstar, but I can see Rockstar's point of view on the subject.

SEGA wants people out there to buy the new Sonic game at full price, rather than download a 13-year-old game for less than a tenner. I would get the outcry if SEGA pulled a Smilegate and took the title down after just a few months with no remaster coming, but 13 years is a decent life span IMO and a remaster is coming.

Sonic (?): Coming summer of 2055...?
I think it's rather unhealthy to take this as affront to everything you believe in and not just, you know, a regular every-day disappointment.

I mean they've got a new version coming out. It's replacing the old version, and has new content. Why would they continue to sell the old version...?

I just really can't empathize with the outrage, here. "Preservation" can't even really be the main reason cause...it's easily found with a treasure map. It's "preserved" already. So...what's the problem? Sega is making it harder to buy the older version because they're releasing an updated, newer version? Is... that it?

Choice is good. Some people might even want to buy both versions.
    Piracy is not preservation.

I had an i7-2600 CPU with an EVGA GTX 960 and I remember having to deal with stutters. Especially in Chemical Plant. Not to mention issues with the configuration tool itself just not even working. And I know this wasn't just a me thing either.

Yes...it is? It very literally is. In fact, without piracy, there's plenty of things that would be bonafide lost media right now. I really want to understand your outrage here but we have to agree on the facts first at the least.

And really, what are we expecting here? For people to sell things in perpetuity forever? That doesn't strike you as... a little unreasonable? I know some developers/producers seem to do that. I know Doom 3 BFG comes packaged with Doom 3, for example, but cases like that are the exception.

I feel like nothing is really preserved if the act of preserving it is a crime. Or at least, it's not any more preserved than it would have been if it stayed up, certainly.

    Respectfully, that's semantic hogwash.

If it's available, it's available. You not liking the method of acquisition doesn't make it any less available.

Because, again, the alternative is to suggest that every company should continue to sell everything they make in perpetuity. That's a ridiculous position to take.

Who said I didn't like piracy? I think it should have legislative protections, in fact. But like, are you really going to act like the fact that it is illegal has no impact on preservation when you're also codifying piracy as the eventual only solution? Yeah sure, maybe this game isn't going anywhere, but archives decay when they don't have any kind of official protection. What's to stop, say, the pirated version of the remaster becoming the dominant one that gets reuploaded and the original does rot, mods and all? That doesn't seem like a completely implausible scenario to me.

EDIT: and Yeah it's just a hypothetical. Please do not respond to this by saying "uhh well that hasn't happened yet" I know. I'm just saying we should be consistent in whatever we think our principles are here, since clearly y'all have been making that shit up on the fly. My point has only ever been that this is mildly inconvenient for mod players (especially future ones) and considerably more inconvenient for mod creators than we're giving it credit for. I'm always telling people to pirate from the start, by the way. SEGA has to earn your money.

I don't know why we're talking about this because OG Generations isn't going anywhere. :V

Nothing is more annoying than someone trying to preempt my response. And yes, I'm going to act like it being illegal has no impact on the preservation when the alternative is to leave it up to the companies. Do you want to buy a copy of Pro Evo before Konami turned it into gacha nonsense? Good luck. Good thing it's been preserved, though! See, I'm not making any sort of "principled" argument, just a literal one. "Is it preserved" is a yes or no question. If the answer is yes, then I don't want to hear another word about "preservation", frankly. "Yes but-" just reads, to me, like actually what you want is something else, and "preservation" isn't your primary concern.

I'm not sure I'm even understanding your hypothetical, but I feel like I'd be restating myself to even answer it so I'll leave it alone. But I will add that my principles on the matter are consistent. What I've been trying to understand is what others principles on this are, because what they're saying their principles are (preservation!!!!) aren't jiving with what I'm seeing.

Mod creators will be fine. SADX basically required piracy for a long time for modding purposes, and plenty of people still use piracy to facilitate modding it for speedrunning purposes. I doubt having to pirate the game would ever put a damper on dedicated modders.

I think that eventually (and this is very long-term) games should ideally go the way of Quake and have their source released officially, when there’s no way for the parent company to continue supporting them or making a profit from them realistically. Generations hasn’t reached that point of course.

—think of things like LittleBigPlanet: shut-down with no real way to recover a gigantic elememt of it since there’s no way to insert a custom server. It’s kind of sad.

Or Photoshop v1 (or so) on the computer history museum website.

Ideally, piracy shouldn’t be the form of preservation if companies can (and care to) provide an alternative.

It's not an ideal form of preservation, no, but it is preservation.

It’s worth pushing for companies to be aware of a desire for official preservation of the games, or piracy will just be the default. It’s worth talking about.

For Generations? Maybe not so much. However, I’m not sure why they couldn’t just give you a free copy of the original along with the new.

By the way, is there no chance that a new mod loader update could be made compatible with the new Sonic x Shadow game? We’ll have to see, I guess.

Right, but what does that look like? That's what I'm asking. Because the "Quake" model will not work for everyone.

In general, where there's a will, there's a way to obtain the original version of the game. And a fact of life is that absolutely nothing lasts forever. l, and no other person, company or any other entity is able to escape entropy.

The fact that there's still absolutely a way to purchase this game in its original form kind of undermines the whole argument, anyways.

And even if there weren't, if you were a business owner and you had to keep shareholders happy, I doubt you would be actively trying to support a product that most people who are interested in it already have it, and the sales are not only slowed to a crawl, but discounted to the point that together these points lead to them not even making enough for the data servers needed to host the files for the game on a monthly basis if this game's sales were the only source of revenue responsible for those costs!

Quake was releasable because all the proprietary bits were replaced by later versions. So that’s super long-term.

For now, I think the better solution would’be been for Sega to bundle the original Generations game with Sonic x Shadow with a disclaimer along the lines of “compatibility not guaranteed.”

@Shade Vortex expands on the point I'm alluding to. For most companies, "spending money to keep versions of a game that have been superseded by newer ones available for a shrinking contigent of customers" isn't a viable business strategy. And actually, even knowingly selling something that doesn't work isn't appropriate, either. "Compatibility not guaranteed" is not a catch all solution.
