I think it should be noted that (assuming all eight items are priced equally) Generations is worth about $7.50 in that bundle, which is roughly 62.5% cheaper than what Sega is selling it for currently. And that's not even factoring in the fact that the Sonic bundles on Steam go on sale practically every other month, and are often discounted well over 50%.

There's little reason to stay mad about this, imo. Would it be nice if they gave you the original for free alongside the remaster? Yeah. Would it be nice if you got a discount for owning the original? Yeah. But frankly I think this compromise is more than acceptable.

That's not how values work here. Sonic Generations is $20, Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 are $10 each, then the other 4 games are like $5. And that's how you get $60. It's not 62.5% cheaper it's still the same price you're just forced to get some junk Genesis ROMs and mobile games with it.

Oh don't give me "compromise" bullshit.
Even if Sega made a better port, or just a port with care (history says they will not), discontinuing a digital release is just pure corporate bullshit.

But I'll say the timing is impeccable after all the buzz on "Stop Killing games" movement, Sega sure know where to pick their dates. Isn't it right Mario Wonder?

My math (which I just did in my head quickly) was wrong. But yours is too: SA2 is $13, the Sonic 4 episodes are $10. So it's $73 worth of games and you're getting 18% off for the bundle, which means Generations is worth $16.40.

So it's still cheaper in the bundle, and my points about further discounts from already owning things in it and regular sales remain.

Delisting a title with extra steps and the gal of petting themselves in the back.
The right thing was not touching how the game was sold at all, but i guess all the enshitifcation on the industry scrambled people's expectations for the worse.

Okay, sure, I guess online users of the sonicretro.org discussion forum probably did have their chance. Actually, they still do! None of this applies for a month.

I think it's way more likely that someone who owns the remaster isn't going to buy the original just for mods on the face of it. Maybe not, though!

The alternative is also something like SADX got, a conversion program to downgrade the remaster to a moddable version.

This has nothing to do with Generations. It's a ploy from SEGA to get people to play Sonic 4. Wake up sheeple

If that will incentivize modders to finish the S4e2 classic Sonic mod (replace modern Eggman and Metal with classic ones, modify level layouts to remove boosters and homing attack chains) I'm all for it!

At that point you're better off downloading Sonic Worlds or whatever the kids are using these days and just making your own Sonic 4.

I get the feeling that try didn't result in a finished build for me to go download, did it.

  14. Trying to wrap my head around this. Will the Steam version of the original Generations only be available via game bundles that are more expensive than getting Sonic x Shadow? If so, that's kinda weird. I think it would be better if it was just made it available for free to anyone who owns Sonic x Shadow. It's clear that SEGA is focused on SxS, and I doubt the original version will remain a valuable source of income to them once that game comes out.

It's available in a series bundle that costs $200 assuming no sales, and you don't already own any games in it (Chances are you do, and it does go on sale a lot), or a new bundle called the Sonic Legacy Bundle consisting of Gens 2011, SADX, SA2B, Sonic 4 Ep 1 + 2, and ROMs of 3D Blast and Spinball for the same price as SxSG, $60, again assuming you don't already own any of the games in it and it's once again not on sale.

  16. I'm honestly a little surprised that they're even still selling the original version. I heard that version's a real piece of work to get running on a modern PC.

I really don't know where this whole idea that 2011 is difficult to run on PC comes from? At best I have to change the selected display, and it might take a 2nd boot to recognize my controller but it basically runs out of the box no problem, and I'm running a build that contains the best components hyper inflated Canadian pandemic money could buy.

Nah, the existing PC version isn't and has never been difficult to get running. It has a terrible launcher and settings management, if that's what you mean. You can't change any settings from within the game itself (including controls), and instead have to do from the launcher. And on top of that, when you launch the game from Steam you're given the option to "run game" or "configure game". You can't then continue to launch the game from the configuration menu. And I think that configuration tool even uses default VB icons on the taskbar.

Its a shoddy mess, but it's as perfectly functional now as it was in 2011. The PC port was handled by a virtually unknown UK studio called Devils Details, IIRC. I'm hoping that SXSG is much more polished port on PC. Who handled the PC version of Frontiers? SEGA Hardlight, the UK-based mobile division, were responsible for Forces PC and did a clean job. SXSG might be the chance for Generations to finally get a PC port that's more than merely functional.

  19. Yeah. I just now installed Generations on my PC. The only problems I'm having are related to how my PC is a low-end potato. I don't really play alot of games on Steam because of my PC's specs and limited hard drive space. I really should've installed Generations before making that post.

The original PC version doesn't play super nicely with newer versions of DirectX and there's this weird bug where it'll stop registering inputs from your controller wholesale. They're easy issues to fix with the mod loader but it is a bit annoying that you have to do it.
