Sonic X Shadow Generations announced, releases Autumn 2024

Discussion in 'General Sonic Discussion' started by charcoal, Jan 29, 2024.

  1. Honestly I think the pricing really isn't much of an issue, the fact that its $50 is a surprise already. I imagine they didn't go lower than that because consumers tend to subconsciously equate lower prices to lower quality, and SxS obviously is intended to be seen as a high quality product

Wanting a discount for owning the original isn't that ridiculous, it's been done before, and by a company SEGA owns. When Creative Assembly released a remaster of Rome: Total War they gave everyone that owned the original a 50% discount. And the remaster even came with a free copy of the original unremastered game. Not to say that I expect SEGA to be that generous, but it's not beyond the pale.

It’s ridiculous if the OG Generations is left up on steam. It’s reasonable if OG Generations is delisted. At least that’s my opinion.

Not to mention the possibility of just everyone exploiting it given how cheap the original game is nowadays, people would just buy that to get the discount -or free copy as some suggests-

Like i get that some games in the past did in fact provided something for the original owners of remasters, but usually they aren't sustainable new packages with new content like this case

How does age have anything to do with it? Not everyone bought the game at launch. If you were given a discount for Mania Plus, you should be given a discount for this as well. I see no difference, and I don't see why anyone else should either. If we were talking about consoles, that'd be one thing, but we're obviously not. Both titles are on PC and both are on Steam.

And regardless, Generations by itself is $20 (minus any sales), and this new one is $50. That means the Shadow content is being valued at $30. Do you honestly believe that what we're getting is going to come even close to that amount of value? Especially when there's no telling whether the base game will be fucked up like Colors Ultimate was, or whether mods will be broken or even unfeasible.

The original game on steam regularly goes for like $5, i dunno man, in my mind if i were a business or company and i was rereleasing a game that we regularly have sold for basically nothing i ddont think i'd be all that fond of giving the folks who dipped on said sales an extra discount for my brand new rerelease. I get the complaints tho, im all for spending less as well but, I just dont think it makes much sense unless they want to be REALLY generous

And as mentioned here in fact! But tbh, if the original is left on steam i see even less reason to get upset about it, especially if said original continues to go on sale? Im pretty deep in the trenches personally of just, kinda making ends meet, but I dunno, Some of the takes on the price just feel, unreasonable to me? Its hard to describe but $50 just *feels* right for a game as good as generations getting effectively a new, if short, game attached to it.

Vanilla Generations should not be delisted from Steam, at the very least it should be packed-in with a purchase of the remaster (this would harm literally no sales) if they had to get rid of it.

There's just no fair way to deal out a deal like that. I got the Xbox 360 version, but now I own a PS5, and there's not even a way to play the PS3 version on that... How am I supposed to claim my free copy? For a physical game, no less, and I'll bet most people own that version in particular. It just doesn't work.

What? No, I'm saying buying the remaster on Steam should also put the original in your library so that the mod community isn't gutted.

Every other platform doesn't need the original since the remaster doesn't have any real downgrades for them.

This, essentially. As someone who got Generations on PC for free some years ago and only uses it for modded levels, I would be somewhat pissed off if that got taken away just for the sake of them wanting to sell a fucking Shadow add-on game.

This isn't unprecedented either. Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition does exactly this - the original version is delisted and not for purchase, but you get it when you buy the definitive edition.

Not to mention people with older set ups would only be able to run the original version, a consideration that also isn’t required for consoles.

Correct me if im wrong but on steam, even if a game gets delisted, if youve already purchased it you dont lose it

Yeah there's no real risk of the game disappearing from your library. I have multiple unlisted games. The problem is that people won't be able to buy the old version soon.

Remember how Sega delisted the Classics' emulated Mega Drive versions on Steam and Xbox Marketplace just prior to Origins' launch?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that the fate of OG Gens is sealed.

  16. Yeah, and there was a sizable reaction to this. I feel like there's a chance that SEGA will keep the original version listed to keep something like that from happening again.

That's why we're talking about it. I'm not sure anyone would have seen the problem coming otherwise.

And yes obviously it's not going to literally make the original impossible to play or mod, people still hack the classic games, but a ton of the work done is going to get less visibility when "buy this game and download the mod" becomes "pirate the pre-remaster version of this game and download the mod".

For what it's worth, Katie was able to pass along the fandom's pleas, but we don't know what will happen. It's saddening that something a change as simple as adding "Sonic Generations (2011)" to a Steam library is up in the air this much. But I guess if they cared about the modders supporting their products and inspiring their developers they wouldn't be putting invasive DRM in them.

I think the most likely compromise, if we get one at all, is that the original 2011 release will be quietly bundled with the Steam version of SxS. Knock on wood.

That's the exact thing we're asking for, it's not even really a compromise because nobody loses. Except people who were planning on waiting for a sale to buy vanilla Generations, I guess. They'll have to wait a few more years to get it real cheap.

30 Day Project: Revisited.A New Release!
Just this last Friday I bought Generations on steam incase of delisting, and found it actually runs on my potato!

The modding scene definitely needs preserving, and I hope as much as possible can be ported to the remaster, if the original is indeed delisted.
