Sonic X Shadow Generations announced, releases Autumn 2024

The original promo art for the short looked to be in the Hesse style of the previous stuff, but the animation snippet posted here and the poster look a lot more to me like cel-shaded CGI, something similar to X-Men '97, but less polished. It might just be due to the recording being an off-screen capture of the animation rather than the source, or maybe the art still needs another pass before the actual release, but I'm not loving the aesthetic of the characters so far, even if the backgrounds and animation itself is great. Maria in particular looks kind of glass-eyed and her face could use some more shading for depth.

 

Looks alright when they're still. But once they start moving, it definitely looks off. That running animation down the hall is also funny.

 

Seeing them with their Emeralds made me turn around and pick up my big yellow emerald off my desk and join in.

But yeah, the art for the animation is different, but I'm not hating it. Also hearing Rise of TMNT mentioned made me happy.
Also as someone who really likes coffee, glad to hear Shadow is one of us.

 

Shadow's running animation has looked weird for a while. I think it's because he's holding a position for a short moment, then quickly shifting between his feet, versus earlier games where he was smoothly gliding between feet at a constant pace.

Gotta love how the two main dudes, Iizuka-san and Kirk, brought the goofs while everyone else pretty much stayed focused. Also, props to the announcer and the team behind the animation. Promising stuff.

The second next or third next game has the potential.

It's pretty much why I stopped watching the Bumblekast. I can't really hold it against them because they're just having their fun but god, some of the questions that get asked in these spaces make me want to peel my face off like a Goya painting.

 

I've noticed that children, if they attend these panels, tend to ask actual interesting and hard-hitting questions, whereas adults ask stupid shit. I wonder why that is.

I'm not sure how to feel about this yet. It feels like fanfiction come to life. But I will say this: Kirk still can't deliver a sincere-sounding Shadow to save his life.

They asked for questions on twitter a few weeks/months ago, and they picked these to ask! This was a pre-determined question picked by Sega!

The audience were not allowed to ask questions themselves!

 

Don't worry, the Japanese dub will be more faithful than the English dub. You'll just wait.

 

I feel like these ones they chose were all appropriate, and the host even got a couple of answers for other Shadow mysteries before it even started. I don't know what someone could have asked about the Dark Beginnings or Shadow Generations in May that would have been relevant after June reveals, after we know way more about each - it just would have been repeats of Iizuka's standard interview answers.

Even if it was cringe, it was wholesome cringe, and I'll take that over "please just show me a sizzle reel" cringe or boring "I've already heard this" stuff.

These are GUN soldiers pointing their gun at them.
They are not pulling punches, we have officially entered peak territory folks.

 

yeah Shadow's skating animation was originally based off of rollerblading but now he feels animated more like an ice figure skater lol

I think the animation looks pretty cool overall but if I have to nitpick, I think Shadow's model looks kind of weird? Like, his hands are so comically large and seeing him next to Maria he just kind of looks more like a guy in a mascot costume rather than the actual Shadow.

 

Does anyone know of an uncommentated VoD for the panel anywhere? I missed it live and I don't have it in me to suffer through Sonic YouTuber cringe for this stuff...

EDIT: Never mind I found the YouTube stream, thought this was just on Twitch.

 

Don't know if the vod's staying up after the stream is over but I decided to start downloading the whole thing but it takes about as long as the footage I'm downloading would take to watch, so it's difficult to say if I'll even catch the actual part I want before then.

 

It truly felt like the animation was cel-shaded and derived from 3D models applied to 2D. Not exactly a fan of this style.
I'd rather have it on the style of prior animated shorts of late; those were SO awesome I wish there was a full-blown series made on that style.
But the tension, the film style, the direction, the OST, all of that were amazing, Sonic in animation hasn't been as great as these last few years.

 

If they do 3D, I feel like they should stylise it. Like that "Shadow as John Wick" fan video recently made.
