Just to update you guys on stuff:

-We want to release it subtitled, but the dub is all that's available to us right now. Not to burst your bubble, but the dub will likely sell 100x better than the sub even if it's edited.
-If you ever want to see it subtitled, pick up the dub. If no one picks up the dub, there's no reason to release the subtitled version which costs more to produce and will have lower sales.
-I'd have to look into the music video you're talking about. Is there a link somewhere? If it has 4kids branding, probably not.
-I love that DBZ Kai preview; that's hilariously awesome. I never knew Piccolo was a Saiyan too... hahaha.
-New audio mix, this is almost always impossible. You have to find the original stems plus music and effects. The most you ever get on these masters are the M&Es and the final mix, unfortunately.
-Pretty sure Sonic X doesn't have HD masters, so I don't think Bluray would make sense, but that's not my call.

How about a recut of the English dub with original music?

e: actually didn't the Japanese DVDs have separate tracks for voices, sfx, and music? All that remains is getting the VO stems from 4kids.

  3. Technically that was an excerpt from a whole half hour of Toonzai previews narrated by Sonic, just that the DBZ Kai one is so badly done it's the most hilarious of the bunch. The rest are more cookie-cutter 4Kids-type faire.

4Kids did a lot of weird mashup stuff like that with their promo material, since Sonic was one of their higher-rated TV programs. Maybe if you dig around the internet you can find some of the earlier stuff.

You realize that would actually be harder than remixing the show as it is, right?

I really don't like it when companies do these sort of things. "Yeah, we MIGHT release the better version, but only if you pick up this crappy version that you don't really want! :v:/> "

But if it helps... I'll consider buying a box set of the dub, assuming it's priced decently.

  6. Yeah, this kind of shit in particular FUCKED OVER Zatch Bell and Astro Boy 2003. (And Cyborg 009 2001 to some extent as well.)

I want to clarify that this is less an ultimatum and more a business fact for ANYTHING like this.

Companies don't say things like that to piss people off, they do it because of the financial model. If the version that's going to sell better still doesn't sell well, why spend money on something that's guaranteed to lose money?

That said, we generally make every effort to put out both versions if it's financially feasible or the rights are there. You're talking about the company that released MONSTER RANCHER subtitled. It's just in this case they asked us to stick to the dub, so that's what's happening. Good sales could help convince the licensor to allow us to do the subbed version. It could not, too. Who knows. But it's the one thing you could do to help push for it is all I'm saying. They could also just randomly say it's okay the next day as well. That's happened before too.

If there's a chance of an Uncut Sonic X release happen, I'll buy this Sonic X Edited Box to support it (even I having all season sets released by Funimation).

Would be nicve if Discotek bring Sonic OVA/ Sonic the Hedgehog Movie, it's the only Sonic animation I don't have in official form.

  9. I would imagine if Discotek got the ability to grab any of those anime licensed ADV couldn't get, they'd start with things that don't already have DVD releases. For example, I'd say the Fire Emblem OVAs would be an interesting pick (and the timing would be a LOT better than when ADV released the original videos), although it's possible they would want to redub them because lolMARS.

Disappointing that you guys can't do a subbed release yet - not to be a dick but I'd kind of rather hold out for that. I don't see much value in the 4Kids dub unless it's uncut and has the Japanese music restored which I know would be extremely difficult (at best).

Funimation's more recent Dragonball Z releases actually do that (take the English vocal track and splice in the Japanese score) but that was also an in-house release which meant they had all the resources, plus it was dubbed uncut to begin with.

Please. FUNimation's DBZ dub is the equivalent of 4Kids One Piece Dub. The only difference being that FUNi decided to go uncut 68 episodes into the series. They had to go back and redub those 67 episodes after.

On Topic: When I see a price on this, I'll get it. Despite not being a huge fan of Sonic X, I own none of it and want to view the subtitled version without dealing with Hulu. Also, I was wondering how this will be packaged. Will it be a box set or something similar to Dr. Slump the Movies where it was just multiple discs in one case?

Shame about the audio, so this will be more/less like TV rips in DVD form.

I'm sure they'll be better than a TV rip. I don't think Discotek would actually do that. If you look at their Dr. Slump set, which is the only thing I own from them, they used Toei's Slump Box masters. So I'm sure the video will look great.

You're right - I mean to say by the time they started releasing the orange box sets, they already had a full uncut dub of the entire series. The Sonic X dub would need to be redubbed and reedited to match the Japanese footage and syncing up the original score wouldn't be easy.

  17. I wouldn't go that far at all in regard to comparing FUNi to 4Kids - in fact, to put them on the same level really understates just how BAD 4Kids One Piece was. Let's compare:
    1) FUNi's DBZ was their first major localization project and the majority of it's flaws are 90's anime-dub-isms that FUNi no longer does anyway. 4Kids' One Piece is the culmination of all their bad localizations they had done since Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon Johto - so to say, it was their "most ambitious" bad hackjob dub yet, if you can coin it that way.
    2) FUNi's DBZ didn't cut whole arcs just to get to a certain marketable character AT THE EXPENSE OF PLOT CONTINUITY.
    3) FUNi released uncut (well, barring nitpicky details which were hard to resolve until Dragon Box) Japanese episodes with subtitles as soon as they started publishing DVDs of DBZ, and was eager to highlight this as a selling point of their DVDs. In comparison, 4Kids tossing Sonic X in Japanese on Hulu was some kind of grand miracle, an unprecedented move by them. The last time they allowed any uncut anime releases, they got to 3 volumes of Yu-Gi-Oh and one volume of Shaman King before cancelling them seemingly for no better reason than to spite the fanbase. (And to further rub salt in the wound, THEY NEVER EVEN RELEASED AN EDITED SHAMAN KING ON DVD.)
    4) FUNi's DBZ captured the general tone of the show and fulfilled the audience expectations well. 4Kids' One Piece betrayed both in it's attempts to be watered-down and more marketable.
    5) Besides the crap Barry Watson pulled in regard to rewrites (For which his stubborn insistence on them being necessary were half the reason he was removed from FUNimation before the Ultimate Uncuts were released, and ultimately proven wrong when Dragon Ball Z Kai got a considerably more faithful dub), the majority of the edits FUNi did were bare-minimum to get the show allowed on television (Even some of the stupider shit, like editing out Gohan's crying, was due to FTC/BS&P regulations). In comparison, a huge chunk, if not the majority, of the edits on 4Kids' One Piece were COMPLETELY FUCKING UNNECESSARY and seemed to be done just because 4kids had a huge enough ego to think they could make the product "better" than it's original Japanese version.
    6) You can play the original soundtrack on FUNi's DBZ. Some may think this point isn't a huge deal, but think about it; what other dub with an altered soundtrack has EVER eventually gone and done this? Very, very few. Somewhere, FUNi was prepared to apply the original musical score on DBZ from the moment they started producing uncuts. And before anyone says "But no, the dub was made with the replacement music in mind!", no, it's not like the cast is constantly humming dub-only music. The dub is improved by having the Japanese score instead of those inconsistent replacement scores. (Besides, if FUNi actually thought that, they wouldn't have gone out of their way to produce the audio track in the first place.)
    7) FUNi's DBZ was successful. It's hard to say whether the dub's dubious quality helped it (I'd be the first to say no, especially after Kai), but it certainly didn't HURT it's marketability. Note that very few multi-hundred-ep animes have ever gotten a complete dub like DBZ has. 4Kids' One Piece, however, was such a bomb it totally destroyed One Piece's place as a mainstream marketable anime in the line of Naruto and Bleach in America. It was so bad that Japan themselves were mocking it. It was so bad that Toei, in an otherwise unprecedented move (remember that this is the same Toei that didn't give a shit how bad DBZ and Sailor Moon got hackjob'd), REVOKED THEIR LICENSE TO DUB IT. And it was one the factors that ultimately sunk 4Kids as a company completely.

(Note that none of this is saying that FUNi's old Z dub was good or anything like that, just, y'know, getting some perspective here.)

But yeah - we're definitely NOT gonna get an "uncut Dub" Sonic X by messing around with the 4Kids dub masters. The show would need to be redubbed from the ground up for it. (And it would be BETTER being redubbed from the ground up - there's so many stupid errors in writing in the earlier episodes that I bet Mike Pollock would be utterly embarrassed to hear his old self say that stuff.)

I wonder, if this dub only boxset were released in like 11.0 surround sound or whatever, if that could lead to a fan edit with the original music.

Just how good are these 4kids masters we're talking about?

This is my most wanted title, honestly. It's one of my favorite things. Still no luck though, I think.

  20. Considering that 4Kids is long defunct, their license to Sonic X expired, and the show itself is over ten years old, I doubt the masters are much better than what's currently circulating on DVD.
