Even if it turns out to be bad:

    —Water =/= Instadeath

    —Power-up monitors

    —Stationary Eggman bosses

    C'mon guys.

I don't think the level design or graphics look bad at all, really; it seems to be the physics engine, resolution, and general constraints of the platform the game is developed for that seem to be drawing negative reactions. I think it sets a pretty cool precedent, though—if the content in this game were transplanted into a competent game engine and maybe modified a tad, this has the potential to be a pretty solid 2D Sonic game in the style of Rush. After all, isn't that more of less what the 2D section in Unleashed were? ;)

I think people are being too hard on this game because, as always, it's cool to hate on Sonic games using the same two or three descriptive traits. If nothing else, though, it serves as a basis for better things to be created using it as a base. And that's only a good thing.

On a completely unrelated note, what exactly is wrong with Sonic's sprites? They look perfectly fine to me; in the case of the Werehog, some of the animations are extremely fluid, even! What's the deal?

We hate on new Sonic games because it's like Sonic Team has a round hole and a cubic block, and they just keep trying to jam the the cube into the circle.

I wonder if it's possible to emulate it. I sure would love to get my hands on those 2D graphics.

There are a ton of Java Mobile Emulators out there. There is even a decent one on the PSP.

To be honest, I'm willing to give the game a chance. For a mobile game, it looks good.
The Sonic sprite, I like the short spines and the stance, the running animation seems a little off, and the werehog sprites and combat look very unappealing.

But it's a 2D Sonic Unleashed and is that really a bad thing?

If you watched the trailer, you would have seen Sonic running up a spiraling 3D tower.
Prove it! Make a better modern-styled Sonic sprite with a full animation set (all of the animations from Sonic 1) in an hour.

Unleashed had 2D segments. Many of them were pretty bad.

Oh, so that's finally cleared up? I thought it was iPhone this entire time. :psyduck:

I withdraw my statements then, that explains it's quality then.

It doesn't seem so bad. Maybe if they did something like this on the wii or 360 with cel shading or whatnot it could come out pretty good too. SEGA has alot to play with in terms of 2d platforming principles.

I personally would love to see a cell shaded Sonic title, in the vein of that beautiful Naruto PS3 game. Shuffle looked cute and all, but think of what SEGA could do in terms of cell shading now, almost ten years later. It would strengthen Sonic's cartoony appeal even more.

Do you think they'd be able to couple cell shading with the Hedgehog Engine?

As far as the video goes, it seems like a strange blend of Sonic Rush and the first Advance title, which could work out pretty well if the Sonic Boost is as downplayed throughout as it is in the video.

    And lol Sonic Ball.

I'd Spin-Dash over boosting any day of the week. Not that I don't enjoy the boost, it just gets old fast. It's so overused that there's nothing special about it anymore. I'd deem drifting a more interesting ability.

If SEGA put the Sonic Boost in a capsule/monitor, and made its icon look like...oh, I dunno, Sonic's sneaker, then I'd be much more pleased with it.

While looking for a way to play this for myself I stumbled upon what appears to be a screenshot of the actual iPhone version of the game:
