Actually you can select any previous level before you even beat the game. I went back to level 2 after I initially got to level 5 in order to back track some of the Emeralds.
Thanks TimmT for posting the game on Retro's homepage. I greatly appreciate it. Dark Sonic is right that you can go back and play stages you have beat anytime. You cannot however continuously enter the same special stage ring because they are disabled if used to get an Emerald/Stone.
I can't play the stage after Sunken Saucer act1 since it crashes on the stage starting. Other than that, the game has been a blast to play so far, major congrats on getting this out.
Sorry this is my fault. I introduced a bug into the game yesterday but got it fixed. If you download a new version from gamejolt it will have the fix for this.
*edit* I've gotten the gamepad to work now, but for some reason there's still no sound coming out of mine at all.
This game is very impressive, Overbound! You've done an amazing job and I applaud you! Still playing through now and it's been pure fun from the start. Congrats!
Is the background supposed to be upside down in this Zone (my first play through)? Ps. If you missed my last post, the sound isn't working on my game (at all)
I have a fairly clean install of Windows 10 on my laptop, and when I try to launch the game I get this: ############################################################################################ FATAL ERROR in Vertex Shader compilation ShaderName: TimeTravelShader D3DXCompile failed - result at gml_Object_objTitleLighting_Create_0 ############################################################################################ Are there any prerequisites software I need to have installed before playing?
So I'm pretty sure that firefly boss in the past version of the level (Viridian something) is impossible as Knuckles. He flies too high and unlike the future version which has a ramp to work with, the past version is only flat ground. Also the first act of the same level in the past version has some spikes hidden behind the foreground graphics, resulting in some strange moments where you get hurt and have no idea why.
That one is easy JCFerggy you need to download DirectX9.0c see the readme file for details. @Growler yes the background is supposed to be upside down. It pays homage stages that do that in Sonic CD. I am not entirely sure why your sound isn't working though. The game is a Game Maker Studio game and it looks like other Game Maker Studio game have had similar issues (specifically UnderTale). The problem in that case was that path of the extracted music contained special characters so playing from a username that didn't have special character fixed it in that case. Others have reported that playing the game in Vista compatibility mode fixed it. If that doesn't work, I am sorry I don't have a quick answer. If you are interested in trying to continue to solve it looking up similar problems with other Game Maker Studio games (HyperLight Drifter, Hotline Miami, UnderTale) would be a good place to begin. @Dark Sonic could have sworn I lowered the boss for knuckles. I will make an issue for it. Thanks!
Here's a video that just makes me very pleased. Its a speed run of the first Act of Attraction Attack faster than I thought was possible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndYpVNNndtg Just amazingly fast! He really knows how to use the level geometry and take advantage of those halfpipe sweet spots.
So I just beat the game as Sonic without getting all the Stones or Emeralds. Gotta say I really enjoyed playing this. I used a PS4 controller for my playthrough, with both the dpad analog sticks mapped (I really had a hard time with the special stages with the dpad, but I enjoyed them). Zones were fun throughout, and I really liked the spread of tropes (Not starting in another green hill was nice.) I did have some instances where I clipped through walls/floors, but it was not that often. I found I mostly stuck to the future, having collected more chaos emeralds than time stones. I feel the final boss drags a little to long, but it is fine. You did a good job at recreating the genesis physics, but my only comment is Sonic acceleration when running down slopes. It does not accelerate at the right speed, like he has sightly more friction. Rolling physics were damn near perfect though. I liked the new elemental shields for the most part. I really liked the wind one, and I found I could use it to break sections, but it still felt ballanced as I had to watch my every step. The ice one was cool, kinda like a super powered insta shield. It would have been neat if it could have also allowed Sonic to walk on water. The rock one was really meh to me. I didn't really enjoy throwing the rocks as a projectile, feeling like it broke my flow. I did really like how you could curl back into a ball when midair, then chaining that into a shield move. Movement possibilities are endless with these changes. I also really like being able to spend lives as retries for the special stages. At the end of the game I had like 20+, so it was nice being able to use them somehow. There was a few instances where music should have played, eg..for the end of act melody or other instances where i felt there should have been music and there was none. Also some of the monitors were not right. I found two beside each other that were plain white that gave me 1-ups, as well I noticed you used the unused S1 Eggman icon for the hurt monitor? I always found that one weird with the blue shirt. Also it felt like the sign posts or bosses were really far away from the "end of the level". Like at the end there was a lot of extra flat ground for no reason. Maybe consider trimming the fat a little? The only other thing is when I beat the game and it showed the bad ending, my game crashed with this message. ############################################################################################ FATAL ERROR in action number 1 of Draw Event for object objTextEnding: Fatal Error: Can not create vertex buffer of size 98304 bytes 7290 vertex buffers allocated with total size of 779184 KB at gml_Object_objTextEnding_Draw_0 ############################################################################################ Overall though I think this is a very good fan game. Likely in my top 5 Sonic fan games. I look forward to collecting the rest of the collectibles and seeing the good ending and trying the other characters.
Jeez, this game has so much replayability! I swear every time I see a playthrough of it I see atleast one route I haven't taken.
I keep clipping through the floor in the second Chaos Emerald Special Stage. I SHOULD BE ABLE TO JUMP THOSE GAPS!
How do you think I feel, the special stage is nothing but frustrations to me. There are a lot of stuff in the game that bother me a lot and it's not worth it to play it (I'm not going to spoil it because people already spoiled it for me and I'm glad they did, I quit while back). I'm pretty sure people point out a lot of the obvious stuff to you from time to time. Still congratulation for getting this done (It feels like a alpha version to me) and hopefully you'll fix it.
Finally got a hold of a decent PC game pad! Literally just went out and bought one just for this game. Super tired right now as I've been up all night but I'll be starting my playthrough shortly. Probably sometime tomorrow. Looking forward to it after the overwhelming amount of glowing feedback. Impressions are forthcoming.
I wish there was an option in the pause menu to restart the current stage. There has been two times I've gotten stuck, and had to restart the game and go back into the stage. Hell, even return to main menu would be nice to load a different character or stage select without going through the opening. -Edit- Also maybe the ability to skip cutscenes.
I'm here to worship Andy Tunstall. His two masterpieces for Frigid Fortress was what got my attention to Time Twisted in the beginning. Among others' Tidal Tubes' are also rather outstanding. And the jingles could've used more originality, I hope.
@Vrantheo Hinchy will be very pleased you like Tidal Tubes. Its one of my favorite songs form the game. More speed run videos! At 0:32 seconds he found a super secret shortcut! I'm so happy someone found that! There are at least few secrets in the game that I haven't seen anyone find yet! I am looking forward to people finding the rest. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gb4PWpfgsXo
