I wouldn't doubt it, it's just that the spindash makes it ridiculously easy.

Again, the ring disappearing seems to be a bug. ( + - Think Marble Zone instead.   )

( + - You can't keep going forward all the time. You'll have to turn around eventually.   )

I finally completed this hack! I don't know if it was because I got used to the ways of Mercury's mind, but the later zones seemed incredibly easy to find the ring. Even SBZ3 gave me little trouble, although I did do three laps of the level.

So, what next? Sonic 2: The One Ring?

Well, yeah. After SLZ1 I kinda figured out that when + - you find the ring to be completely inacessible, you should just ignore it and go look for something else somewhere else. Plus, SLZ3 shamelessly recycles the same exact gimmick from SLZ1, so.

SBZ2's ring I didn't even have to try, but I guess + - the challenge is more about being able to carry it to the end than finding it.   Awesome artzy brick formations both there and in Marble Zone, by the way.

    ( + - I'm disappointed that you didn't do something clever with Final Zone, though. :(   )

Seconding Sonic 2: The One Ring. This is the most fun I've had with a ROM hack in a while.

    I just finished this!
I have to say, I definitely loved this a lot. Some of the rings were quite easy (lol SBZ2), but some other ones were a hell of a challenge (fuck yeah SLZ1). Probably this is the hack that kept me entertained the most throughout the whole game. Of all times. This is yet another proof that you don't need upgraded graphics or a brand new soundtrack to get something awesome out of Sonic 1.

Mercury, if you weren't a Tech Member already, I'd nominate you again.

Or Sonic: The Two Towers? Sonic: The Return of the Ring? :v: You'll just have to wait and see...

Yes, + - I wanted at least one Zone that emphasised trying to keep the Ring, and SBZ2 seemed a natural choice since it's so hard. Also, rehashing LZ3's gimmick in SBZ3 was intentional, as an homage to the fact that SBZ is a rip-off LZ in the first place. =P

Um, Yuji Naka's? I'm not sure I understand.

I was jokingly implying that it was your fault for not adding another one. I'm not known for my effective humour.

While it would effectively be almost the same as this, I think a hack with in-level Emerald hunting, like the Master System version, could be good. I know that's one of the challenges in Retro Remix, and there have probably been other hacks featuring it too.

I still need to give this a proper go. I played a bit and appreciate the fact that badniks and other hazards actually pose a threat, and using monitors (and at the right time) is important. And, of course, exploring the layout and using it to your advantage is more interesting than "hold right to win"!

    Ah... y'know I contemplated adding a 7th one, too.

    Spooky! :v:

In GHZ2 (yep, I'm doing well) do I need to + - have speed shoes   to + - reach the tall hill on the right   ? As it is, + - I spin dash up the quarter pipe and launch off near the top   , but + - can't quite make it   and + - often land at/in the S-tunnel   . In any case, + - they tend to expire before I can try   .

You can get there in vanilla Sonic 1 without any speed shoes. I believe + - you just suck, sir. X)

Now that is my kind of bandwagon.

In my (limited) defence, I've never used anything but basic techniques for exploration, because it wasn't necessary in the original games. Even S3&K's Giant Rings are quite easy to find. Should I + - try to make the jump from the left platform itself   rather than + - from the top of the quarter-pipe   ? Admittedly, this might not bode well for future Acts. :v:

    Utter facepalm @ self.
I didn't realise that it was that easy, I.e. that + - I would get enough height from that small hill   .

Don't feel bad. I didn't realize it either, and after + - struggling with the half-pipe for what felt like forever, I figured out the little hill by accident.

I was torn between relieved, and pissed off. XD

Well, I've fixed up nearly all of the bugs you guys brought to my attention (the SBZ3 slope problem, the disappearing SLZ1 Ring, etc), but I'm not putting up revision #8 just yet because there's one last bug. It's this one, the Special Stage VRAM garble bug:

It turns out that any Special Stage will exhibit this problem, if entered through the end of MZ2.

Why should this be? It's a real corker: because I changed the size of MZ2. I proved this to be the cause, and you can duplicate my findings, too. Take a fresh Sonic 1 disassembly, and find the second instance of "17 BF" in the Level Size Array, and change it to "18 BF". This single character alteration alone will cause the issue.

I made MZ2 a little wider so I could move the Signpost and Giant Ring to the right a bit, so they wouldn't load their art tiles while some spikes were on the screen. Sure, I can fix the problem in another way, but it somewhat bothers me that something as simple as level sizes can't be edited without game-breaking errors arising.

EDIT: Nevermind, I solved the problem. Sordid details following (because I just never shut up, do I?):
I'm gonna do a quick runthrough of the hack myself, just to be sure my recent tamperings haven't broken anything else, and then I'll upload revision #8, which should be stable enough to be the final build... I hope.

EDIT 2: Revision #8 is up!

Also, for anybody who gets stuck, there's an entertaining Let's Play on YouTube. (And even if you've beaten TOR, it's worth watching for his adorable accent!)

  16. Just got to working on this now. it's evil and awesome at the same time :) As many have said, Megamix and the like are fantastic but sometimes we just need a few tweaks to make a hack enjoyable. I found many of the placements downright genius, including GHZ3. Congrats Mercury. Now let's do 2. :) I can just imagine Chemical Plant...

  17. You already know how I feel about this hack Mercury, seeing as I'm the guy who is doing a LP of it on youtube.
I love this hack for it's simplicity: a simple idea, which really works wonders. Proof that you don't need to do a full hack, sometimes a little tweak is all a game needs to make it a great hack to play. It's nice revisiting the 1st Sonic game and finding stuff in it that I would normally just go whizzing past without bothering to check. I can't you enough praise for this hack, I love it.

Hey, thanks! I've been really enjoying your LP, too.

It's good to see you here at Retro. :)

  19. All my kinds words have went right out the window thanks to the Star Light Zone. I have been calling you a few things that I can't really say here or in the videos. 1st act was a pain, I don't know how many attempts it took me to complete it all because of what I had to do in order to get the Ring. Then only to find that I have to do the same thing in the 2nd and by the looks of it the 3rd act as well.
But even through all this, I still love the hack for it's simplicity.
