So, not to toot my own horn since I didn't actually spend any money or scan anything myself, but this has been a white whale of mine for a long time.
Years back somebody emailed me with blurry photos of a film canister and a Sonic movie treatment asking for the value. The preservationist in me asked for a potential scan to be able to see exactly what it was but no dice. They ghosted me.
2023 the treatment appears on eBay for $2k, and it sells to somebody. Turns out I know this person and they want to do something with the treatment. They suggest SEGAbits gets Cybershell to do a read through, and long story short David the Lurker eventually met Cybershell through his podcast which made it easier to connect with him and explain what was up.
After much back and forth with the treatment's owner, we've managed to plan a day and time to read through the treatment on his Twitch channel. The stream will be at 7:45PM central tonight at https://www.twitch.tv/thegameshowgame
After the stream, the PDF should show up on the wiki this week. We have it saved, just want to honor the plan to stream the read through first.
So yeah, I'm excited to finally release this document which has been a long time coming.

Interestingly, the Knuckles document I found back in 2022 was from the same source as the treatment however the document I shared was from a different source. Basically the owner of the treatment bought a ton of interesting SEGA/Sonic documents and items and the Knuckles one was among them. https://segabits.com/blog/2022/03/1...merge-from-newly-uncovered-internal-document/

Incredible find. Won't have time to watch the stream tonight, but I wish you the best with it either way!

Took a brief glance at the stream and... what the hell is this? It's about a man who accidentally turned himself into a hedgehog?

I can tell I would hate this as a kid

  14. No wonder they commissioned the "Wonders of the World" treatment later on.

Something interesting that was noted during the stream is that at this time Sega wanted at least some part of Sonic's Japanese origin story (The one with the pilot) so this treatment did the bare minimum by having Jimmy wear the jacket that Meg had in that story. I'd really like for that origin story to be adapted as a fan short film or something, I think it'd be pretty interesting if done right.

I could understand writing a treatment like this in 1991/92 to help sell Sonic to a wider audience, but by the end of '94, a lot more series staples had been established, and Sonic's initial surge of popularity was on its way out. There wasn't a need to use "kid mutates into Sonic and there's a big guy with big arms so they can name drop Knuckles" as a vehicle to introduce Sonic to the world.

Oddly, the treatment opens with a note stating that most people don't know about the video game story so it was on the film to establish a new mythology. Based on the direction the Mario movie went in that era, seems that was the line of thought a lot of Hollywood production companies had. General audiences don't know the game plot, they know the characters, and for some reason the game plot is not as good as the shit we can cook up which will be darker, edgier and something we can put our stamp on. It is a stupid way to make movies and I'm glad modern video game movies are more in line with the video games. Even the 2020 Sonic movie, as weird as it is, does line up with the games. It just makes Sonic's world and our world two different planets. Instead of merging like they did in X and Iizuka's old canon, they start to bleed into each other due to characters traveling to Earth and alien mythology being discovered on our own planet. Given Shadow is already on Earth in Sonic 3, it seems like they are slowly focusing less on Sonic being otherworldly and just treating Earth as home to all the characters. Worth noting, in the early drafts for Sonic 2 and in the junior novel, Sonic's home planet is Mobius.

Anyway, I've started a Wiki entry for the treatment as well as Wonders of the World. Once I flesh it out a little more, the PDF will live here: https://info.sonicretro.org/Trilogy_Entertainment_Group

  19. IIRC, the original Mario Movie was a lot more in line with the games than the final film. The reason why it became less faithful was the fact that the movie switched through directors throughout production. The directors of the final film just wanted to do their own thing, and that's how we got president Bowser.

EDIT: This version of the movie managed to get a script.
More concept art can be found here.

  20. I genuinely thought it was Sonic Adventure that established Knuckles lost civilization. Also I wonder if they had planned for multiple sets of emeralds hence why they don't mention anything about a master emerald.
