Sonic: The Lost Worlds

    The Xmas trees decorations are a bit too small... I'm not sure you'd actually see what they are on a real (blurrier) TV.

    Also, the balls look quite flat.

    I was wondering if anyone noticed the very close similarity to the names.

    Aaaaaaanyway, this hack seems to be doing great. Can't wait for a release.

    It's good to see some more positive replies.

    Yea, I realized the similarity in the names when I started working on this. Actually the name isn't for sure. If I can think of something better it'll change. I thought about calling it "Sonic And Tails" to match with it being kind of like how Sonic And Knuckles is in the case of Sonic 3 but, it's not like it's making Tails playable since he already is in Sonic 2 and there's no lock-on technology. And also because there's already Sonic And Tails 1 & 2 for the game gear.

    Originally, I wasn't gonna post anything about this hack till it was finished. Then I realized, if I did that, I would only get to post about it once and if I don't use these trial posts somehow I'll never get past trial membership. Anyways, yea, I can't wait to get this released so I'm trying to work on it a lot.

    After some delays, I got some more things done. First, I made animated patterns for the quicksand in Desert Zone and the ice crystals in Winter Zone. I also made a cycling palette for the lights and electricity in Cyber City Zone. Here's some animated GIFs to show them:

    I also fixed color issues with all the sprites I'll be using. Here's some animated GIFs of the piranha and octopus I ported from the early prototype.

    I also made some touch-ups to the level graphics and the 16x16 and 128x128 mappings for Desert Zone, Winter Zone and Cyber City Zone.

    I've also started on Rock Zone's graphics. Nothing to show yet but, I'll be working on it as much as I can. I should have more time now. That's all for now!

    Actually, it's already in there. You get the horizontal swimming by setting the first declaration to the number of blocks you want it to swim before jumping. I think it had to be from 0 to F. I reorganized some of it's code when I ported it but, I haven't done any ASM work. So far, I've done everything in hex except for graphics which I used SonED and TLP.

    I did some more work on the title screen a few weeks ago, and today. Here's what it looks like.

    One other thing I want to do, if I can, is replace the Sonic and Tails with the ones from the beta. In order to do that, I think I have to replace the sprite that loads and animates them with one that just loads the art and then copy the art from the beta and do the mappings for it. If I can't do that, it'll probly stay how it is now.

    And I've been working on Rock Zone. I still have a lot to do before I show any screen shots but it's turning out okay so far.

    In a few days, we're going on vacation for a week so, there won't be any more progress till I get back.

    I agree with Dark Sonic- you shouldn't change the Sonic and Tails on the Title Screen. You might want to change the colour behind them, though. That green looks pretty bad with that background.

    Yea, I didn't change the foreground palette but, I probably will now. And maybe Sonic and Tails will stay how they are, if everyone thinks they look better like this.

    I've always wondered if that green was really intentional. After all, it was one of the last additions and they did screw up other things in the last-minute rush.

    They might have thought the artist had finished already when that green was really a placeholder background color, or something.

    I think it was something like that. If you look at the Japanese animated Sonic 2 adverts, the hand-drawn logo has a black background.

    And we're back! I didn't have any time to work on this for 2.5 months cause I was way too busy with classes and work. The last few weeks, I got back to work on this and I'll be working on it more over winter break. The graphics and mappings for Rock Zone are done. I hope it looks ok.

    I'll be starting level layouts soon. First I have to do some edits to Wood Zone so it looks finished, and see if I forgot anything else.

    Another thing, I never said which music is being used for which zones, so here's the list:

    Desert Zone - Oil Ocean Zone (Final)
    Rock Zone - Mystic Cave Zone (2 Player)
    Wood Zone - Wood Zone (Beta)
    Winter Zone - Emerald Hill Zone (2 Player)
    Casino Night Zone - Casino Night Zone (Beta)
    Cyber City Zone - Casino Night Zone (2 Player)
    Hidden Palace Zone - Hidden Palace Zone (Final)
