    hey wiki you're so fine
I thought we'd be covering this on the wiki somewhere, but apparently not.

Around the time of the first Sonic game, Sega released "Sonic the Hedgehog Story Comic" (ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ ストーリーコミック), which I lazily thought was "the Sonic manga" until I realised it was a different Sonic manga. It's turned up on Retro before - there was a big discussion about Sonic having fangs.

So, inspired by recent events I was going to make a page, but, having a look online shows it was released in three (very small) volumes:

and this thing also shows up:

I had assumed this was a compilation of the three parts, until I noticed the "1" in the bottom right. So is that a reprint? Something else?

So, do we know what the situation is here, and do we have better scans?

I don't want to look abusive... (I hope IceKnight don't get mad with me... )... http://www.sonicdatabase.com/Sonic1991/sonic1991.htm ... i discovered the link to that page here http://sonic.wikia.com/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_Story_Comic ... I'm not assuming the information is correct in that wiki also...

    BLUE ARMS.

Anyway, I looked at this recently as well. I would have thought that there was a wiki page. The reason everyone was talking about it before is because that is when that great manga haul was done, that now dead website was made, and translations of the various manga was going up a page per day.

Pencil Hill Zone has what I believe is every page:

I've seen the "blue arms" cover before, but I'm not sure where how it relates to the 3 mini comics released with Mega Drive Fan. I'll investigate.

Did someone mention the Blue Arms yet?

I remember pressing towards also releasing the unaltered scans so that the originals would get preserved. Were those ever released or are they lost now?

Well, I do like people linking to my site, specially when it's the original source of some relevant stuff... =|

I believe that info is what Solly told me when she sent me the scans. That wiki just lifted it from my site, forgetting that the third issue would have been presumably released in August.

This meaning that if what she said was right, the edition with the blue arms cover (from which we're still missing the third issue, I think?) was the original Mega Drive Fan release and the others with the unified cover were released somewhere else.

How much of this manga was translated, and can you still find the translations online? All I can find right now is translations of the first story and the first page of the second story.

Getting three PDFs of the original Japanese versions really needs to become a priority. I remember seeing this a few years ago - it's crazy that we've let it slip.

It looks to be the other way around. The back covers of the "logo" versions say they come from the July, August and September issues of Mega Drive Fan.

According to the Sega Retro wiki the actual release dates would have been June, July and August, as the date on the cover was always one month ahead.

The back cover of the "blue arms" versions also have the Mega Drive Fan logo on the back cover, but with 特別編集 written underneath/to the side, which seems to mean "Special Edition".

"Mega Drive Fan Special Edition"? I'm not sure if that sheds any light on the situation.

They're all on Adamis' Pencil Hill Zone blog as jpgs:

Boy, Eggman's sure sounding like Slithe from Thundercats there, yess!

And speaking of Eggman, I wonder why they coloured his, er... yellow... bits (what are they meant to be?)... in red?

Thirdly, "Megadora"? Star Land Zone? Sparkling Zone? Clockwork Zone? Yet Labyrinth Zone has stayed the same.

Whatever they are, they must have been released before July 1991, since they're also advertising the future release of Sonic 1 in their back cover.

Maybe the "special edition" ones were just a giveaway at game stores in the preceeding months, with the last one being released on launch date? That would make sense.

This blog post might be saying that it was distributed in a toy shop. Difficult to be entirely sure with Google Translate, but maybe someone fluent in Japanese could help?

Lost as far as I know.

However, on the subject of manga I do know that Ryoga has at least one volume of a later manga so someone should hit him up for that.

The memorable first edition!! This is SEGA's "Sanic The Hedgehog" comic book!
This is when Sonic first made his first appearance on the Mega Drive.
An advertised comic book distributed at a toy shop, depicting Sonic's encounter with Dr. Egg

So uh.. Sonic was a rockstar? LOL

    ---

I'm still going to translate this actual comic book. I have it on my computer in my to-do list unless someone else does it first.

I can't believe how useless I am sometimes:

    https://retrocdn.net/File:MegaDriveFan_JP_19910701_f.pdf

That's why it looked familiar - Akane gave us the first volume back in 2015. So I would guess this set bundled with Mega Drive Fan magazine.

Don't know where the other set came from though - I can only assume they were free since there's no barcodes or price indicators.

I remember from the Eggman Sonic the Fighters model, the yellow was all part of his cape where the tips fold over him to make the 'walrus teeth'. Can't remember if this was the design intention from the get-go or if this was a later addition but there ya go.

I think it was just a mistake on the colorist's part, just like the blue arms on the cover. They must not have paid enough attention to the official art to realize they're supposed to be yellow.

Anyways. Semi off-topic, but does anyone know what's the deal with the first manga described in this page? I've been intrigued by it ever since I first read that page ages ago, seeing how it seems to be a faithful adaptation of the game stories, but have never seen any documentation on it since then. What gives? Did it turn out to be just a doujin (despite that page calling it official), or it's just an under-documented manga?
