Finding this beta is like, finding a gold nes world tournament cart in a box lot of random nes games on ebay, it happens. I much prefer how this went down over someone talking about owning it, not sharing it and then trying to sell it for a minimum 20k only for either no one to buy it or for it to go to a private collector, lost forever.
Has there been such cases? Of collectors boasting about their acquisitions but never going to share them?
Assembler Games (now defunct) was full of collectors who bragged about getting prototypes without sharing. One of them had the Sonic Xtreme prototype we were looking for.
I can't remember. It was a long time ago and Assembler isn't around anymore. Might have been the Nights engine?
This one, maybe? https://hiddenpalace.org/Sonic_X-treme_(Jul_18,_1996_prototype) If so, it seems to have gotten dumped after some time.
IIRC it was the Nights engine, which is available now. There was also the PS1 version of Superman 64, which was eventually released after several years.
Thanks! Good to know I'm not losing my mind. Yeah it's available now, but for a while they were real jerks about it, and just videogame hoarding in general.
One of the most prominant examples I can think of is the Super Mario 64 DD beta. I beliebe this was also the same person who had an American Nintendo 64 DD as well. Someone on ASSembler Games had it and was willing to dump it but once those guys got involved the 64 DD itself ended up in the hands of the YouTuber Metal Jesus Rocks and I think he ended up selling it to someone and then I think it ended up in a museum. Super Mario 64 DD was never heard of again.
Geez, really? That sucks! Damn hoarders and their pride and greed. And Sonic-related? Has the community lost a chance at something?
For Sonic related I can only think of the Xtreme proto we lost out on back in the day simply because someone was mad at our community. I THINK we have that one now? Dunno. Apparently drx missed out on a Saturn proto of Chaotix as well. But those are the only things I can remember hearing about.
iirc the location of a Sonic 1 prototype was known for a long time but the guy wouldn't dump it online for some reason or another. Apparently it's still rotting away in some old warehouse. I might be misremembering tho, so someone correct me if I'm wrong. But I remember reading about it on this very forum a little while ago..?
If you are talking about what I think, that guy was having a feud with his father and therefore the apparent proto is rotting in storage.
Yeah I remember the guy's father being involved now that you mention it, we're probably thinking of the same prototype. I wonder if it's the same one we just got? Can't say I remember.
I remember reading that in here, last year or so. What a damn crap, family feuds are screwed... Most likely, even the guy himself may not know or be sure. And time sure is racing against us the community and that potential prototype...
So this whole story is going to make me check out every Genesis lot being sold on eBay because who knows.. maybe another one is in plain sight
