Guess I'm set to go on Sunday. Could go as early as Saturday but the person I'm going with said they like the sound of 2 PM and that's the only day with that time.

    Lmao same.

y’all think they’re gonna do a separate Shadow movie series after this? I feel like it would be a success if they did

Looking at the Thursday numbers so far. Mufasa is getting clobbered. Sonic has a significant lead as of right now.

Mufasa bros...are we going to eat crow?

I'm man enough to admit when I'm wrong. Looks like Mufasa wasn't competition to Sonic domestically afterall.

Given that it's almost impossible to release a Christmas bomb unless it's one of the worst movies ever made, I still expect Mufasa to do fine. But Sonic outgrossing it might be a possibility.

I am still curious how it all goes and where Sonic ends box office wise (500 to 700 million seems secured) but for now I'll say I was wrong to think Mufasa would be competition domestically.

One thing that never stops being weird in these movies is Sonic and crew considering themselves literal brothers as in the actual adopted children of Tom and Maddie. Like hearing them refer to them as their kids and having sonic treat tom like his dad is just still so weird in a way that's hard to put into words why. It feels very... muppet babies? lol if that isn't dating me.

Obviously, all that's a left over from Sonic 1 being it's own weird thing that kind of got aborted mid-way through, which is why Longclaw hasn't really been a thing since the very beginning of Sonic 1. But it's still weird and I have to think if they could have done it all over again, they would have never made Sonic the adoptive son of a human.

I decided to actually check my theatre's showings last night just to be sure (And thank god I did the plan was to just show up to the theatre as soon as they opened and hope they'd start playing Sonic 3 right away, I would've been 2 hours early if I did that) and I noticed that there's way more showings for Sonic 3 than Mufasa, even with all the big fancy Imax screens. I think we're winning here

I think it's actually the adorable center of the films and makes them work.

Saw it last night. Liked it. No major complaints. Reeves is a better Shadow than early trailers and clips made me believe, and his backstory with Maria is handled very well. I liked how the score integrated a bit more game material than usual. It was good!

That's because there is. Major showtimes were published Monday. IMAX and 3D screens all went to Mufasa, but theaters gave Sonic everything else. I've seen some locations actually take showtimes away from Mufasa in order to give Sonic the bigger screen.

Looking at the Thursday numbers as of this morning its not even a close competition. Sonic is grossing more than double of Mufasa. Sonic could be entirely frontloaded and take a dive, and it would still be on top. Paramount themselves already reported their Thursday numbers confirming what I've been seeing.

Sonic 3 made $6.5m in Thursday preview shows. Mufasa made $3.3m. That puts Sonic 3 ahead of Sonic 2's Thursday previews of $6.25m which opened to $72m. Mufasa's numbers are closer to Wonka and Into the Spider-Verse numbers, which both opened in the high $30m range.

    Mufasa isn't in competition here.

I saw it last night. Solid like the first two. Wouldn't say it's better or worse than them either. Sonic 2 is probably my favorite of the trilogy because the parts that were based around Sonic were great.

Will watch again in the future.

Alright. I'm gonna watch it next Friday with friends. Will I do myself any harm if I watch the cam rips videos floating around on Twitter? :P

As someone over 30 who begrudgingly watched the movies and actually enjoyed them, how does it compare to 2?

On this same note I'm curious if this one would change anyone's mind about these movies or if it's pretty much more of the same.

That's awful. I spoiled myself for Sonic and Sonic 2, and I didn't want to do that again. So this time I had opening day tickets and the internet was still trying to spoil me before it even came out.

Same age range, and as far as Sonic movies and video game movies could go, I think it might have been a masterpiece. Watch it, it's definitely at least as good if not better and it's a great theater experience.

Detailed thoughts, (warning: spoiler-adjacent) if you're interested.

I'm 36, so outside of the demo. I expected to hate Sonic 2020 but ended up enjoying it, because there was so much heart in the "little boy" Sonic performance that I never expected to see or appreciate, given the characterization over the years as the cool/aloof wiseguy. There was a lot of frustrating human character scenes that read to me like contempt for the subject matter, and we all saw the original design for Sonic and what that conveyed to people who liked Sonic. But the post-credits tease had me hooked for a potential Sonic 2.

Then, the Sonic 2 trailer drops, and I was so hyped since it was going all in on adapting my favorite game ever S3K. Not to mention, I watched Sonic at home and I got to see Sonic 2 in the theater. I was delighted the entire time I watched it, although the Siberia dance scene and the wedding scene killed the pace in my theater experience. But, Knuckles and Tails were amazing! And then Super Sonic! I was so satisfied, especially with the adorable ending, because I was a sucker for the Tom/Sonic father/son arc and then Maddie loving Tails and Knuckles was just so heartwarming. Some little kids freaked out at the post-credits tease for Shadow.

For Sonic 3, I walked in expecting more humor along the lines of Knuckles and the first 2 films, but that's really only sprinkled in. The performance of Sonic is actually really mature compared to the first two films, while Jim Carrey chews the scenery throughout the film in dual performances. I didn't feel like the movie was high-jacked at any point in service of less interesting characters and everyone is used in a logical and effective way. And, it has just as strong an emotional core as the one in Sonic 1&2.

Sonic might actually kill the Disney remakes, we got Battlefront 3, TF2 got its final comic... It's the best Christmas gift a man could've asked for.

Just got back from the movie. I don't know how, but they did it. They actually did do it. They made it work. This is unquestionably the best Sonic Movie, and the team behind it should feel extremely proud of their work.
    wait fucking waht
