In one of the weirder marketing choices, the official SpongeBob channel on YouTube is currently running a livestream where they randomly edit Shadow into scenes from old episodes.



Bizarre.

 

LOL, I saw Shadow use Chaos Control to slow down time while Plankton got squished.

Bizarre indeed.

 

Arguably two of the most valid targets for disrespect that could possibly exist.

CoroCoro's getting a prequel manga for the movie

 

They really, really want to make this movie a thing in Japan. It's not a coincidence that they fight Shadow in Tokyo (and even renamed the film Sonic X Shadow Tokyo Mission). Sonic 2 apparently had abysmal sales over there and was in theaters for only a couple weeks, but hopefully this time around they can drum up some interest. They've been pushing Sonic as a franchise like crazy there lately, with sponsorships, collaborations, pop-up shops, and these manga. The Tokyo disaster prevention posters featuring Sonic and co putting out fires were all over the neighborhood I stayed in a couple months ago and the SxSG cafe was being promoted ahead of time in Shinjuku.

 

It didn't help that Sonic 2 came out over months after everyone else already got it. Sonic 3 is at least coming out in the same month as everyone else.

 

Movies come out super late in Japan most of the time, even later than most other countries. For some popular ones like Disney films, I assume it's because it takes a while to dub. But the English sub-only films sometimes also take upwards of 6-8 months. I remember when I lived there Moana came out a year after everyone I knew in the US had seen it. I think Sonic 3's simultaneous release shows how serious Sega is this time.

 

They've even dragged in One OK Rock again and are using their song Neon in the Japanese version. Likely just for the credits though lol, I can't imagine there's a spot where it can be seemlessly inserted into the movie.

 

Best part is Neon will be in the Western ver. as well.

 

It should be noted that media Piracy in Japan basically does not exist because of how Piracy is actually prosecuted. Like years long jail sentences.

People in Japan didn't go see Sonic 2 because they weren't interested. Not because they saw it elsewhere.

Hope 3 does better all the same.

 

Booked my seat for Sonic 3 today and was surprised how many have already been taken. What's it gonna be like being in a room full of other Sonic fans watching the premiere of a movie based off Sonic freakin' Adventure 2!?

My inner ten-year-old is on cloud nine.

 

I think this may be the closest I'll ever experience the first TMNT movie on opening night. Pretty stoked.

Just a little more info from the world of exhibition. This is mainly Sonic vs Mufasa, not any other films in the market.

To no one's surprise, Mufasa is leading in terms of overall show presentations. Mufasa is dominating every 3D and IMAX screen which is giving it a significant edge over Sonic. For 2D screening though, Sonic has more shows than Mufasa, but again, this is because Mufasa has the big boy screens. These are all still early schedules though. Theatres will be adding more showtimes in the coming days as each location figures out what's the strongest for them. The place I'm seeing at for example just added a ton of shows. And those sons of bitches just put up the 3:00pm fan event and sold it out too.

The internal projections I've seen people come up with are putting both films neck and neck with no clear winner. That'a impressive if Sonic only has standard ticket showings. Looking like a very good week.

Ah, I forgot that contest. I'm surprised that she went for the game design rather than the movie design.

I got tickets for me and my 3 year old for the fan event on Thursday. Not sure what all they're going to do, but I'm excited. It'll be his first movie in the theater.

 

I managed to score free tickets to an early screening tomorrow, I'm pretty excited! Although I don't think it necessarily guarantees entry, it seems like a first-come-first-serve type of deal, so I'll definitely have to hustle to get us there reasonably early.
