Dude it's quite literally right there on the Super Mario Bros. movie's wiki - it's remembered fondly as a cult classic particularly internationally - hence the apt comparisons I've been making to this upcoming Sonic film because Sonic will likely endure the same fate - especially with Jim Carrey on-board over-acting his heart out as Robotnik.
No worries dude. I saw it last night and thought it was fucking terrible - so the cult following is strange to me too. I thought the hover boots and Bladerunner-esque set design was cool - and that's about it. Why people think it's a good and under-appreciated film years after the fact eludes me too.
New film shoot photos seem to show Sonic driving an SUV through the streets of San Francisco via ResetERA. Same source shows them using Sonic 1's title screen for the film's clapper board.

Holy shit this is hilarious haha. Even better as a screenwriter that sits in front of Final Draft all-day. As for San Francisco wanted to echo Dark Sonic in that really Sonic should be sliding down the street on metal City Escape Sonic Adventure 2-style - but I guess an idea as cool as that wouldn't be appropriate for this family adventure. I wish people that had more respect for the games were working on this - even with the project code named "Casino Night" (which initially gave me some hope).
