Whilst Sonic is definitely in a strong-ish place with a large age bracket, your comparison movie examples don't really work, because their lack of presence was arguably the very reason they got made in the first place. There was enough of a wait to revive an old IP that's well-known enough to be remembered, but not enough for people to remember if it was actually any good or not. Sonic isn't in that boat. The average person is well aware that Sonic still is a hit-or-miss IP that has produced more duds than hits in the past decade. It's not had the kind of wait that say- The Chimpmunks had to get people to think "Hey, we haven't seen <x> character in a while..". I think the movie will have some degree of success, but probably not for the same reasons that TinTin or the others did.
