I actually agree that Sonic & Pals have been losing their personality and soul since the 2000s.
And yes, I can now see that it started on SA2, as it departed from the essence of the classics.
I'm not saying the classics were or are the absolute best, but I'd now rather see a return to the SA1 formula (with classic controls as perfected as possible) and work from there.
Be it gameplay, storytelling or characterization, all need some rework, in my honest opinion...

Classic Somic short, round, and him a little ball. Modern Somnic long muppet arms, bendy leg, big shoes. Little Sonc works better for game where you are little ball, because him a little ball.

That's my theory tbh. Modern Sonic doesn't marble quite the same as Classic. He's good at many things, like grinding on rails on someone's private property and helping Shadow kill the president (?), but marbling is not one of them. Rolling in the sand like a pillbug is Classic Sonic's favorite pasttime, let him have this. Let him have this ONE thing :(

People are understandably tired of Classic Sonic in any amount of spotlight, but keeping them separate to do their own stuff is a thousand times better than shoehorning Classic into a simultaneous adventure with Modern again.

.. and Forces was almost 6 years ago now, which is enough time on a planetary scale for people to have had kids that are now able to talk and be in the first grade in schooling systems. So it feels fresh in our collective minds, but in the grand scheme of things that's an impressively long time for people to hold grudges. But hey, Sonic fans never forget.

They did a doodle of Classic Espio for the Twitter account last year, to celebrate Chaotix's 27th anniversary: https://xcancel.com/SonicOfficialJP/status/1516914725832978433

Up until recently Sonic Team treated the Chaotix game as non-canon.

It could also be Mighty or Ray given they’re implemented in Sonic Mania.

It seems in Japan the game's called "Sonic SuperStars", with a capital S in the middle.

    Maybe it'll be...a SSS title... ^^"

Badnik Ecco will be a boss fight, calling it now.

If it happens, everybody who reads this needs to give me a pound (or a dollar 28 cents if you're American).

I've harped on this before, but anyone else feel the camera should be zoomed out more? Seems like this is the perfect chance to adjust the distance a bit to accommodate new players. Rayman legends feels like the closest counterpart to Superstars to me, and the camera distance in that game is way more generous.

Frontiers had some genuinely amazing camera customization, so I'm hoping the same treatment gets applied to Superstars.

Bad idea. The physics feel off when the camera is zoomed in/out in classic games. MarkeyJester once released a hack (partly as a joke) of Sonic 1 with a zoomed out camera with everything else unchanged...

...the video doesn't convey it properly but I've played the hack myself and it feels very off.
The scenario to Sonic proportions are essential to make the game feel right imo.

I think trying to say that modern Sonic "can't curl into a ball as easy as classic Sonic" to justify why classic Sonic has that gameplay style and modern doesn't has always seemed like a really silly argument. I know it's not that serious, but Sonic's also a rubberhose cartoon character and has always broke his own design's rules to work.

We wouldn't be making distinctions on why this specific design can't curl in a ball if he never stopped doing it (and lets be real; he never should've). If we were, we should be asking how/why classic Sonic can run with his legs making a perfect circle without his leg and hip bones shredding into sawdust, or why Sonic's silhouette can be three perfectly curved spikes when 3D renders show six spikes that often obscure each other. It's just silly. lol

This doesn't look odd to me, there's just more ground to cover. Not to mention Sonic 1's ground speed cap.

    Also ow my ears.

My argument was never that Modern "can't", I just think Classic's design is intrinsically more conducive to it, not becuase of any notions of realism, but because (I personally feel) it conserves the design's volume that bit better. Ultimately, though, that was an aside and not the crux of my argument. Overall I just think Classic works as a great branding short hand for the gameplay he's in. As long as SEGA is consistent with this, you can tell at a glance what kind of game you're looking at from seeing him, even if quality isn't a foregone conclusion.

I get you, you're good lol. I just don't want it as a reason to excuse why new Sonic games don't have rolling in them / can afford to botch that. Otherwise I don't mind the separation in styles or expectations between the two, I just wish the core between them was shared rather than treated as different beasts.

Yeah, the separation is still a mite too defined for my liking and I really hope classic as its own pillar doesn't preclude future attempts at Advance or Rush styled games, but I digress. Give us Sonic Battle 2 and go whole hog with making it a send up to Fighters with that cast and the IDW characters. Clearly the only way to properly cross the streams...

Hell yes. Would be such a perfect way to revive Power Stone and Sega is stupid for never doing it.

I like this a lot, so maybe it's just not a popular opinion.

Not where I want to be.
Sonic (?): Coming summer of 2055...?
Have you played it? It may not look weird, but it does feel weird.

I played that hack on hardware fairly recently and it didn't feel off at all to me. I wouldn't mind an option or mod to zoom out a little bit.

That said, the current field of view isn't by any means a problem to me.

  20. I agree with having a Sonic Battle 2, but what’s the connection to Power Stone? Why would Sega have anything to do with that?
