    A bit hard to say that it's a racoon because we have Marine. To me, it's odd that they'd do a species retread when a character's already in the portfolio (outside of Hedgehogs, of course). It's possible, though.

    Funny you say that because my first guess would have been a cat, but we already have 3 of those not counting the Avatar from Forces. What if this is was classic Marine? How left field would that be? I'm joking of course but it's fun to speculate.

    Yeah, I was thinking of Big and Blaze as exceptions myself. It'd be interesting if they went for something like that, yeah, but take a look at the tail: it shares in its pattern, but not in its shape. It'd have to be a different character in that case, I think. Personally, I'd think maybe a different species outright, but it feels like it'd be a tad off to make that kind of change.

    Marine's younger, right? Does footage of this character look more on Tails' level of height as far as we can tell?

    EDIT: Just remembered that there was mention of this being a new character, which is probably a part of giving Oshima billing in the promotional copy. It won't be an old favorite at all!

    A raccoon makes sense -- they're sneaky and they get into trash. Where did that character find that robot gear? Could be scraps they turned into attire for whatever reason.

    Could also be a Ringtail. The big eyes match.

    Overall, there's not many animals with ringed tails from my light google searching.

    I am now convinced this will be a solid game. I don't know if it'll be the best classic game, but it's clearly put together with love and care for what makes 2D Sonic fun. Congrats, everyone

    I take all my concerns about level design back. Looking at the videos, the level design looks similar to Sonic CD and seems to be designed for exploration. Enemy placement and variety seem good, platforming and gimmicks seem interesting as well... there's a bit of "automation" (not really, for example you can stop and walk on the grind vines; it seems to be possible to backtrack a lot too), and some ideas seem to be copy-pasted from older games (the jungle level has Stardust Speedway gimmicks in it), but overall seems to be original enough, and even the recycled gimmicks are redesigned in a way that feel new (that trap that blocks you in Mushroom Hill now is a frog that grabs you with its tongue).

    Also some situations surprised me and it was nice; like, the moment when the Buzz Bomber shoots a freakin laser and chases you! There's a lot of creativity in the game, and I think it will be very enjoyable.

    I like the bossfights a lot too.

    Physics-wise I've got the impression that's just 1:1 Sonic Generations 3DS, and because of this and a couple of other details, I'm even suspecting that the game might run on an updated version of Gens 3DS' engine, and there might be Dimps involved in some way. It's just a theory and maybe I'm completely wrong, but that's the vibe I got. Is it confirmed that's developed internally by Sonic Team? Because I remember that Dimps' games referenced only Sega and Sonic Team in their intro and title screens, and the Dimps logo only appeared in the end-game credits.

    If the 3DS Gens engine is being used that's close enough to Genesis and I'm comfortable with it, but from the 10 minute gameplay and my obsessive playthroughs of 3DS Gens I'm pretty sure it's a port of the Retro Engine physics somehow
