I resist the idea that the level design in Superstars isn’t as mediocre as everything else, honestly. I feel that the levels are overly long with often jerky pacing that kills any sense of flow. Maybe this would be improved with a replay to develop level knowledge but, as it stands, I think I’d rather play CD - at least that game does something interesting with its shit level design in making the gameplay loop a scavenger hunt for time posts and generators.

Not that I'm aware of. But I can't imagine it should be too difficult to create a mod that replaces most of the bits encounters with the relevant sign posts/capsules to end the level stress-free. I'd do it if I could.

Game's meant to be pretty accessible for modding with it being built in Unity I think. We've already seen the Sonic Rush mod, so I imagine the main hurdle to a boss overhaul mod is probably figuring out all the changes that need to be made and doing the necessary animation work to go with it.

I think the level design suffers from a lot of slow down on purpose, to compensate for multiplayer. It was a great effort, but I'd had prefered split screen.

I thought this was a bug, because I couldn't figure out exactly what caused Knuckles to occasionally detach from a wall when I tried to make him latch on. If it's intentional behaviour rather than an oversight that this can happen when you try to latch on, it's not a very well thought out one. But I think it's probably unintentional that he jumps from walls if you bairn too slightly be pushing up when gliding into them. The gangs isn't distinguishing between holding the jump button to glide on one frame and pressing it again to jump off the wall on the next frame.

They really made a number of sloppy errors with Knuckles' gameplay in Superstars and it makes him the worst character to use in almost any situation. It's a shame. He's always been my favourite, but Superstars manages to make him so clunky.

  8. What is with Sonic games and poorly explaining their mechanics????

  9. Has there ever been a breakdown on how the dragon boss’s QTE works? It’s one of the most inconsistent QTEs I’ve ever experienced, despite hitting the button when it wants me to it seems to work 30% of the time for me and it expects you to do 6 in a row without fail under a time limit. Going through that 7 minute slog only to die on that is miserable.
You have to awkwardly hold up (diagonals won’t work) while gliding into a wall, keep holding up then tapping jump when he hits another wall to chain them together. Its neat but cant make up for how awful his glide is.

It's from this video review. He made Knuckles 10x more fun to play with.

  12. INB4 someone brings up his “Sonic is fundamentally Japanese” video :ruby:

Seriously thought this was a glitch as I couldn’t figure out what was triggering it. I thought it was a long input buffer and I was starting the glide too close to the wall. The way it functions differently than a normal jump does seem to imply it’s intentional though.

Haven’t played the game since watching the video the other day but I’m looking forward to giving it a try. Pariah is one of two creators I actually give to on Patreon because he actually gives enough of a crap and is good enough at games to show cool and unique stuff like this instead of making countless, “BLANK is fundamentally broken,” or “Learning to love BLANK,” BS rants that say nothing new. I’m glad to see him popping up with useful info.

So just throwing in my two cents, long time Sonic fan, constant complainer about physics, Sonic 4, and other stuff…

Superstars I bought on a whim in the Nintendo Online Shop sale a few months back. It was heavily reduced (£20 I think or thereabouts?) and I had just come off finishing Origins Plus.

I really want to like Superstars. I really do. The problem is that it does everything adequately and nothing superbly.

    The graphics are reasonable.
    The physics are reasonable.
The level design feels overlong, but reasonable.
The storyline - what there is of it - is a very simplified affair and basically just the usual Robotnik/Eggman takes over the world schtick.
The emerald powers are a nice idea, poorly executed. Like really poorly executed. The C button function for these is awful. Better to just map them to a button. Most controllers have enough buttons these days for the 7 emeralds, after all.
The character roster is interesting. Amy, Knuckles and Tails all play reasonably well and very like their Origins counterparts. Fang coming back is fun (could we not have had him as a playable character?) Trip is surprisingly good fun to play with, I enjoyed her unique wall spinning climbing ability.
The medal system is atrocious, most items in the shop are too expensive given the nature of the game’s levels and bonus stages.
The battle mode is a surprisingly fun addition but I would have liked to see the ability to run the robots through the main levels too.

Overall it’s a 7/10. There’s been a lot of thought and development that has gone into it, and I appreciate it for being significantly better than Sonic 4, Episodes 1 and 2, but it suffers from just being average when it could have been amazing.

Also, the lack of lives is mystifying. I want lives back. It feels distinctly odd to have unlimited lives. Very much like the Origins mode with the coins, which I didn’t enjoy as much as the originals.

Mania and Mania plus still the high point of recent Sonic games for me. Frontiers was a swing and a miss again for me. Superstars is like - meh - but I got a few smiles out of it. Not appalling. Fun, sometimes. Mostly frustratingly average.

Oh and the music is just forgettable. Which is why its at the end, I forgot to complain about it in the section above.

So I don't know if this fully fits the thread, so if it doesn't, I apologize, but remember those Sonic Superstars Acrylic Display Stands that were supposed to come with pre orders of the game (at least in the United States)? Well, apparently GameStop somewhat recently got those delivered to my local store, and have started to just give them away. Idk if this is a local GameStop thing only or a company-wide thing, but it's available at least at that one, and me and my two brothers got one each, all three of them having been a varying degree of scuffed and damaged to some capacity. Does anyone know if any other stores or locations have obtained these recently? I wonder what took them so long to actually deliver them? Twitter link of me showing mine off, as proof: https://x.com/DionysusAntaeus/status/1798403913626112361?t=6hgJscaYNhl2PCe4TACJGQ&s=19

Iizuka was recently interviewed by VGC and there’s an excerpt I found encouraging as a fan of Superstars:

“Q: It was really great to see Oshima-san return to the Sonic series with Superstars last year. Was that a one off, or would you like to collaborate with him again in future?

A: It was really fun to work with Oshima-san on a game. It was a long time since we last worked together, so it felt very nostalgic. We’d been away from each other for so long, but then everything worked like it used to.

I had a blast working with him making the game, and I think Arzest did a great job executing on reaccreting that classic Sonic game from scratch.

Personally, it was so much fun, I have a great relationship with Oshima-san, and I hope we can carry that into the future and maybe work on something else in the future.”

I can only hope they're very receptive to all the feedback on the game, particularly with regards to the music and bosses, but I'd also like to see improved graphics and level design and structuring.

Wouldn't hold your breath regarding them being receptive to feedback at all. Think of the feedback we gave them for years about Sonic 4, yet Superstars still feels like a kind of sequel/continuation... of Sonic Fucking 4, only slightly less wank.

Nah, it's much less of a headache to put Classic in the hands of people who just "get it", people who are even more spergy over the finer details of what makes a great Classic experience than we are. I hope when their ambitions are fulfilled elsewhere, that Evening Star/CW etc are welcomed back with open arms to show how a Classic sequel should really be done.

I agree with you, but…Sonic 4 Episodes 1 and 2 really were dreadful. I thought a few days ago that, nah, maybe being younger and more prone to anger I had overreacted, so I fired up the old Wii and played them both.

No, they really were dreadful. I remember the whole Ruby Eclipse/Physics are being worked on pack of lies from back in the day, they really screwed the pooch and didn’t understand the brief.

Sonic 4 remains one of the biggest wastes of a name ever. You don’t make the next game on from S3K so utterly bad. The small budget, initially phone based game had so little going for it.

Episode Metal, weirdly, was a good idea, done badly on the same Episode I engine.

Episode II…not enough time in the day to describe my frustration at how bad that was.

The whole Sonic 4 saga is far poorer than Superstars. Superstars at least has genuine rolling physics, and I appreciated the little genuinely fun touches like the robot boss changing based on your choices of parts on your prototype.

But for real…put Classic Sonic titles in the hands of people who know how to make them. Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, Tee Lopes and the rest…Mania remains a highlight of the last decade in the fandom, for sure.

I think Superstars is great aside from the bosses being dogwater and some of its music blowing chunks. Sonic 4 is just mediocre all around and all of its music blows chunks.

How did you play Sonic 4 Episode II on your Wii?

...Wait, there was a Sonic 4?
