Sonic Superstars: A New 2D Sonic Game (Fall 2023)

Best Buy is currently selling the game for $20. This is definitely a temporary sale but it's worth noting frontiers has never dropped this low in price, even when on sale.

As an aside frontiers is on sale right now too for $30.

Here's my theory on what's happening.

In a slide talking about how Superstars was doing they said the initial sales were slow but they were hoping Superstars would sell similar numbers to Frontiers after Holiday advertisements and discounts.

Clearly the game didn't move many units at $60 because a mixture of factors including competion (Spidey 2 and Mario Wonder came out the same week), being divisive quality wise, and many people not wanting to pay that much for a 2D platformer in general unless its Mario.

It's seemingly found a lot of success at $40 and even more now at $30. Especially because it has a store presence and is a perfect impulse buy at that price to keep your child satisfied for a while or if you're just looking for a new game and like Sonic.

Think they're just playing the units game. Even if it's through discounts and promotions they want it to cross 3 million just because it'll look really nice to say Frontiers sold 4 million and the following year a 2D Sonic game crossed 3 million.

Makes the franchise look really healthy which is good for all of us, even for those who weren't a fan of this game. Pretty smart strategy.

 

That has been their strategy for a while. They spell it out in the sales reports that they're aiming for total unit sales over its entire life cycle and not just launch day sales. This is a similiar strategy that Capcom deploys with their titles. First wave purchases are always good, but their strategy is to get the unit numbers up through various marketing promotions like discounts, post game support and collaboration events throughout the game's entire run. It's the same thing they did with Sonic Frontiers.

 

Sonic 2 hype release date notwithstanding, my impression has always been that it's a long-tail kind of series

 

Just got it with the Steam sale, any recommended mods? I've heard the music can be hit or miss

 

I mean cool and all but it doesn't change the fact this game went on sale sooner, more frequently, and at a lower price point than Frontiers did at the point it crossed 3.5 million.

It might be their normal strategy, and I've seen it with the persona games and yakuza games too, but even those usually only drop to $40 and not for an entire month on end.

Clearly this situation is extraordinary within their normal strategy because it might seem similar at first it's definitely more aggressive in terms of taking advantage of units sold from discounts.

 

Actually I've just been posting about the sales figures and how it's doing, and praising their strategy to sell more copies.

I haven't mentioned my own feelings towards the game once while doing this. There's nothing else for me to add after this so I was done but I have not been saying anything on my own personal feelings on the game during this discussion.

I can talk about sales figures and how a game is doing, even one I don't like, without being rude or tearing it down and I haven't said anything of the sort on this page.

Me mentioning reasons why it might not have sold crazy figures at launch isn't doing that either.

Costume will be out as a free download on February 15th.
