Sonic Superstars: A New 2D Sonic Game (Fall 2023)

Discussion in 'General Sonic Discussion' started by DefinitiveDubs, Jun 8, 2023.

  1. Can't relate to the pricing stuff, I know I'm gonna have fun with Superstars regardless of how short it is so how much I end up paying for it isnt an issue. Relating price to amount of content has always been weird to me anyways, that's how we end up with so many games these days full of unnecessary bloat, including Frontiers tbh.

I'm more than happy to spend $60 on a quality 2D platformer. If Superstars holds up I definitely will put dozens of hours into it.

  3. Preloads for this unlock based on NA time, right? I'm trying to determine whether to get an Xbox version digitally or just wait until Tuesday.

I'll have you know Spellbound Dizzy cost £1.99 on release in 1991 (equivalent to about £6 now) and had over 100 rooms to die for bullshit reasons in. Clearly the takeaway here is that games should go back to being on cassettes, and exclusively for decade-old hardware.

(Yes I know that isn't what you meant.)

I'll buy Superstars when it's on sale, not worth a rabbit skin that can be modded in

Having played a way bit more of Wonder and like 3/4 of the game i feel, it gets way better as it goes, and honestly shocked at the amount of ideas and effort they put in this one, the last time they made a 2D game of this caliber was Yoshi's freaking Island, took them about 30 years but they did it, it feels like a main mario game for once, datamining credits showed that some main Mario games staff contributed here so maybe that's why

    DK still better tho :colbert:

Up on MC, down on OC from 77 to 76, finally same score on both sites, such is life

To be fair, Monkey Island launched 1990 - a lot of inflation's happened since then. Luckily there's apparently a handy-dandy site which adjusts this quote in real-time to account for that: https://fineleatherjackets.net/monkeyinflation

The internet truly has everything, haha. XD

(Incidentally, even on today's rates, Sonic Superstars is still more expensive...!)

Also, on an unrelated note - looks like the LEGO Sonic skin DLC is now being officially listed, at least on Nintendo's webpage. So it seems it should be a free download launching the same day as the game itself. I'm curious whether or not there'll be any additional skins unlockable through the game itself, or whether the whole skin functionality is just to accommodate a couple of pieces of DLC. I'm hoping for the former, as it'd be a shame to implement that feature and then not really make use of it in the base game...!

sad to say that this is one of the few xbox games that has a global launch date, instead of releasing at midnight in whatever region you swap to. so the new zealand trick sadly does not work.

also swapped to japan, and that didn't work either

I've been able to get both early and while I still prefer Mario this sums up my complete feelings on the situation.

game arrived early for me so I've been playing through it and have to say I kind of love it so far. The emerald powers are pretty neat and I think they feel a lot more natural and seamless than the wisps. The soundtrack is cool though it's a shame the faux-megadrive sound is used so much.

I can definitely see some flaws and with time I'm sure they'll become more obvious but there's nothing offensively bad. This game isn't mindblowingly amazing but it's fun! I like it.

The game drops tomorrow, you know what that means...

Now is the best time to replay Sonic 4.

    Gentlemen, it's been fun.

Steam copy unlocks in 15-ish minutes.

Even though we had Mania (which of course I loved in the end), I've waited 25+ years for a official Classic Style 2D title with entirely new content.

I've had a few that came close (Pocket Adventure, Advance 1), and a few that were far less so (Sonic 4).

God help us all as we all start to play this over the next few days.

At least SHC 2023 looks solid this year, if all else fails.
