Sonic Superstars: A New 2D Sonic Game (Fall 2023)

Song is nice. It's not Jun's Sonic 4 Episode I OST, so that's all I care about.

Rather annoyingly, I agree with you on this. With Mania there were too few truly original stages, but what was there really had some great new tropes.

Here, I've yet to be wowed by any tropes themselves, which isn't actually the most major flaw among titles in the franchise, but does indeed point to yet another aspect about Sonic Team that seems to have been long since lost since the 90s. I don't know if I will ever get to be wowed again by unique, otherly, creative fantasy settings like in Sonic CD, or by the more grounded but complex looking visuals of S3&K. Even Adventure 1 tapped into that feeling regularly when it stepped away from the real world aspects.

It's certainly possible for Superstars to do it. It just has yet to pull it off. Even Super Mario Wonder seems more incline to do so this season. Sadly, it feels more like seeing stage tropes in Sonic 4. Better executed for sure, but a sense of "oh, that again" is there.

That's not to say I don't see quality or integrity in the product. It's clearly there, even in stages with gimmicks I care less for, there seems to be a clear gameplay based intent to design that we've been lacking for some time outside of Mania, and I do appreciate that. But that childlike sense of wonder certain stages gave me? Not there anymore, while Mania did tap into it ever so briefly. Heck, even the 2nd act stages tapped into it with the "how will they twist this old theme" creativity, and I was still an adult when Mania came out.

We'll see. I think the game will ultimately be good either way. I just don't know if it will wow me the way I wish it could.

I haven’t heard much of the music at all this time around, same for gameplay. I’ve been enjoying the conversation and descriptions that’s been going on here though! I’m planning on saving it all for day one

Don't worry, the positive vibes will go away after the Senoue track drops and the inevitable Sonic 4 comparisons post start flooding in.

actually re: music, I wonder if this was the project Senoue was working on during Frontiers? I found it strange that the Frontiers OST had so many names, some I recognized from prior Sonic games, but Senoue does not have a single track on it.

 

Does anyone know if the Emerald Powers can be selected via methods other than the second control stick? I'm considering getting a Saturn controller for my Switch to play this game with but I cannot find any info.

 

We don't have any information regarding control schemes yet. But seeing as it's got a multiplayer focus and is on Switch, it would be a surprise if you couldn't play the game with a single Joy-Con. I guess there'll be a way to access the Emerald Power menu without the right stick, but it might be limited to only controllers that don't have a right stick.

 

You bring up a good point. I'd say it's likely there's a method of doing so, probably through some sort of button combination or even cycling through them with a button.

 

I mean, the triggers shouldn't be doing much in a classic game.

Their track record at releasing exclusive DLC afterwards for everyone isn’t great so this absolutely sucks. They would have made a lot off the SA2 shoes for Frontiers by doing it a month or two after the newsletter deadline ended as paid DLC but they just said nah.

 

Maybe if we tweet at the Sonic Twitter really, really hard...

 

The Soaps are available normally on Japanese digital storefronts.

I do not like the idea of this being Amazon exclusive though... good thing I didn't order off Play-Asia yet.
