So it appears that Sonic Runners rumour from a while back was correct and true. Sonic Runners is a Sonic Team developed mobile game due for release in 2015. Not much is known about the game at the moment but we're supposed to be getting more information in January of 2015 as the original rumour also indicated. At least this confirms Sonic Team is still active in developing Sonic games though only mobile for now. Given the game is called Sonic Runners it's highly probable this is a Sonic Dash-style endless runner. It'll be interesting to see whether this game is superior to Sonic Dash given that Sonic Team is at the helm. From what I can recall Sonic Dash was hugely popular and successful for Sega so I suppose another Sonic mobile game should be expected. The surprise here is that Sonic Team are developing it so the game has the potential to be decent. Hopefully next year that other rumour of a Sonic Team developed next generation Sonic game for 2015 will also come true. Maybe this is a side project? Doesn't make sense to put the main team on a mobile game...unless its not just a runner like Dash...
And lo, in the wake of Sonic Boom, Sonic Team hath forsaken home consoles forever and moved on to the greener, cheaper pastures of mobile gaming.
Too little, too late IMO. The time to get into mobile gaming was years ago. Especially with the whole backlash against f2p and skinner box mechanics
Apparently this artwork has showed up in the announcement according to this Twitter post. Looks like Sonic wearing some accessories akin to his RIders getup, in a Apotos-esque location. Amy seems to be sitting at the table with the opened umbrella as well. It says "Free Running" under the picture-maybe it will retain the idea of parkour as a gameplay tool?
Looks more like Sonic hunched over with his left arm extended in the air than anything like Riders gear. Also let me just say that it's funny how one piece of concept art for a mobile game feels like it has more ambition than anything ST has produced in the last 5 or so years. Color me really interested in how this unfolds, cuz you got me with the parkour, now you're keeping me with Apotos involved. EDIT: Confirmed for not real. Part of a fan-art contest. Booooooo. Expectations back to zero. Gosh diddly dangit, Right when I thought I could've expected anything that good.
Hard to say that I'm not disappointed, but hopefully this is a stopgap, and there's a big console game being worked on by a different sub-team. EDIT: I'm glad that fan art isn't legit. I'm hoping they keep the Lost World aesthetic, which was the best part about the game.
Excited to see anything with Sonic Yeam at the helm Hopefully they will be making a console title too.
Guys, somehow I doubt that Sonic Team would put the same amount of people behind a mobile game as that of a console Sonic game. :| Still, I expected this to be made by Hardlight. This being made by Sonic Team actually makes me somewhat interested now.
I know they wouldn't, and I'm glad they wouldn't. I'm just surprised that ST even considered making a mobile game. I can only wonder how it's gonna turn out.
I'm not. Lots of Japanese game developers make mobile games now including SEGA. It was only a matter of time until Sonic Team joined the fun.
I guess so. Still, might be pretty hype to see an actual mobile Sonic game that could potentially be worth playing.
So is the audience making jokes about how bad the fan art is? Looks like mst3k. Anyway, it's cool to hear another Sonic game is being released. Would have been nice if the next announced mobile game was Sonic 3 & Knuckles port though.
Definitely. As an owner of a Sony Xperia J that could probably run this I'm excited. I'm due for a phone upgrade in two months too so even if the required specs for this are intensive I could still probably get the game and run it by the time it's released. I agree with TimmiT in that it's probably not going to be on the level of an all-out console game because it's on mobile so the ambition and scope is going to naturally be more limited. But a decent Sonic Team developed mobile Sonic game I can play wherever I am? Definitely interested and even a little excited to see what this is going to be. We'll get hard details and probably screens and media in January so should know more quite soon.
Oh, I'm still expecting this to be some endless runner type game. Maybe 2D instead of 3D. But this being made by Sonic Team does make me a bit more interested in it than I'd be in another mediocre clone game by Hardlight.
Ah okay. And yeah I echo the same sentiment. Sonic Dash was "okay" for what it was but I got bored and disinterested in it rather rapidly. It was just an endless Seaside Hill stage from Sonic Heroes that was kind of fun for a while I guess but hardly an earth-shatteringly good Sonic game. I also didn't like how it was rigged to charge you so intensively to derive any enjoyment out of it. I know that's the way mobile games are going at the moment but it felt like I was only getting a quarter of the enjoyment out of the game I should have been getting because Hardlight/Sega wanted to get money out of me. As for those disappointed that this announcement isn't a Sonic Team developed next generation Sonic game that we were all hoping for there's always this image that leaked a while back. I know Sega kind of vaguely denied it at the time saying the information was an "error" but I think that might have been because the information leaked out too early and they were worried about the then imminent release of Sonic Boom.
Indeed, hmm, not sure how to feel about this. mainly the question at the back of my head is if this is a shift of things to come but it'd be a dumb idea to completely fore-go consoles right now, maybe in 20 years but not now.
Hmm, well, what to make of this? >Doesn't appear to be a fully-fledged Sonic game >Appears like it'll be simple and minigame-esque In that case, I'm not interested. Real shame. When are we going to see another actual proper Sonic game?
If I had to guess, we'll probably get another non-mobile Sonic game when the inevitable movie tie-in comes to whatever Sony is planning (assuming the speculation is true).
