I liked the music and visuals, but the gameplay was just blegh. Glad to know it's getting an overhaul. How about the boss? That's probably what I liked least about that level, it felt really unfair and generally annoying.
It isn't 2.2, but it's a step forward. Presenting: Thokker, the addon soccer game mode that, while fun to play, is unstable when joining servers because of the current netcode. Also contains slopes. Hopefully this will help tide people over until the next official release.
I wasn't planning on throwing my hat into the "I work on SRB2" ring on this board until 2.2 was done, but I'm rather pleased with how this newspost on interfaces and accessibility turned out and figured it was worth sharing. Especially the customisable colourblind mode and closed captioning, which are weird but satisfying feature-babies of mine. I'm kinda curious to know if other fangames have attempted things like this in the past; I'm definitely not aware of any prior art, or else I'd've made sure to have it mentioned in the text!
Only watched half the trailer. It was spoiling too much, so I want to forget everything I watched. I'm super excited about v2.2. First played SRB2 back in 2003 and it's amazing how much it has changed since then.
I can't believe it has already been 20 years since development started. I remember first picking this game up at around 2007 and being absolutely amazed at what the game was capable of. Now, to see all of this goodness that's planned for 2.2, I can safely say that it will definitely spark my interest in SRB2 again after being absent for quite a while!
Seriously. I think I first found it 2002-2003 as well. Unbelievable work that it's still going. It's vying for dominance to be the best 3D Sonic game ever, official, or fan-made.
Sonic Robo Blast 2 is probably my most played Sonic game behind Sonic 3 & Knuckles and maybe Sonic 1. I never thought SRB2 would have evolved anywhere near as much as it did 15 years later. It's hard to not feel old when the timespan of your life playing an in-development fangame exceeds the time period when you knew nothing about it. First demo I played only had four stages and that year's follow-up demo more than doubled its total stages. I used to think the old Castle Eggman stages were really cool when I was 13, yet now they seem so lifeless compared to what's available in v2.1. I still have fondness for the 2003 special stages though. They were super easy, but it was a fun way to learn to be speedy with the engine. Kind of surprised SRB2 isn't a more popular game to speedrun. I was always trash at being fast, but I always found the levels rewarding to zip through quickly. My experience with time attack in official Sonic games is far more limited in comparison. Like I barely used that feature at all with the GBA games. I hope v2.2 becomes a more successful game for streaming than previous versions. People seem more interested in speedrunning 3d platformers than ever before.
Well, it's official: 2.2 releases December 7th of this year. This thread probably needs a new title at some point, Shadowhog hasn't worked on it for years :P
Kinda wish they'd shown off a trailer or some screenies, but I'm glad to see it. This is looking like one of the biggest updates for what is still the only really finished and polished 3D Sonic game, even though it's based off an era where 3D was essentially fudged and the game has had massive changes since it's original "final" version.
Well yeah, they've shown off a lot of stuff over the past few years, I just meant some new media in general.
SRB2 isn't just a fangame, it's a way of life! My oldest friend will ask me on the odd occasion if I still make maps for this game, that's how into it I used to be. I can't say I don't miss it, but it sure is hard to compete with what's out there now. The bar has been raised quite a bit since I was building contest-winning levels. Anybody still hang out on IRC, or is it all Discord now? It would be nice to touch base again when 2.2 drops.
Oh, good timing. I just started replaying the most recent version on my Switch and it's great, but this is gonna be even better. Can't wait~
Oh nice. I've been looking forward to this update for quite a while. When I saw this thread had been bumped, I definitely did a double take. I'll never forget playing Tets Base back in the 1.08 days. One of the first SRB2 WADs I downloaded.
Looks fantastic. Now how about not overhauling the entire game again for the next update? This is easy proof that hard work pays off, but come on, 20 years and this thing is still missing half its levels
It's hard to imagine what else they could do that might demand the entire game be refactored around a new feature. Slopes just happened to change, well- literally everything. Hard to believe a game I've played off and on for what will soon be an entire decade, is not only still going strong, but only getting better and better each time. The level of effort and passion that's invested in SRB2 is difficult to miss. An entire community has (almost literally) grown up around the game, and it shows. I am looking forward to this. I might sigh at custom characters breaking again, but I can see myself having too much fun with 2.2 as-is in the first week to feel all that bothered about it. The introduction of slopes has already brought so many good qualities to SRB2Kart, I can't wait to see how it affects the vanilla game.
