Sonic Riders Was Once Planned For GBA (Sonic Stadium) Well, now we have something new to look out for Proto-Hunters. maybe if we hit up these guys via email we can get them to share more and find out what happened to the builds that they had.
Sure it was GBA and not DS? I would find it very odd that they were trying to make a 3D-style game for the GBA when the DS was in full swing. I mean, 3D did work on the GBA, but it wasn't excellent for full games most of the time.
According to the news, it was canceled because SEGA wanted more 3D. I imagine that the game was like Mario Kart Super Circuit.. There were a lot of racing games in the GBA with those graphics, I wouldn't surprised if that game followed that style
Yeah, 3D games on GBA are generally pretty awful. If this game would have been in 3D and on GBA, I'm sure that it would just have been added to the list of bad Sonic games released around that time. Also Backbone Entertainment wasn't exactly a great developer.
I can honestly kind of see this working. A mix of Sonic Advance 1 and 2's special stages could have made at the very least an interesting take on the Riders series.
Lest we forget Sonic Riders was still released Although I'm not sure if that one was "bad" as much as it was "inherently stupid". Sonic and chums on hoverboards - not exactly what you'd call world class game design. At least on the GBA it could have been marked out for its technical prowess... depending on what they did. There's this old tech demo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Bixb6ZVaxU which at the very least suggests a WipeOut-esque game might have been possible. There are some interesting 3D experiments out there - they didn't necessarily have to be Mario Kart Super Circuit clones.
I found this looking for some images (it's from a forum) Obviously it's not from the game but it's a good approach...
Around here? I feel pretty well one does have to these days... Riders on handheld, though? Hm, well, I guess the worst we coulda gotten was a game as radically different as the two Colors-releases?
I didn't think Riders was that great - I didn't think so then, and I don't think so now. I don't know how I managed to beat it.
I really enjoyed the first one, even if it caused me to kind of murder one of my controllers. I wasn't a fan of Zero Gravity however, and I've yet to fully play Free Riders for more than 5 minutes of tutorial.
Crazy, I would have never guessed this one. Do you know of any provided way to contact these guys through e-mail by chance?
I found both of them on LinkedIn... Keith Erickson: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/keith-erickson/93/824/779 Arvin Bautista: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/arvin-bautista/1/90a/994
Be polite if your going to contact them, we don't want to scare them off or anything but damn if I want to know more about this and those 2 are our only leads atm.
It's sad because looking at Riders gave me F-Zero GX vibes and it could have been a spiritual successor if SEGA gave it to the right people, but then I played it and it doesn't even compare.
