In a spur of the moment decision, the Sonic Retro podcast crew decided to get together last Saturday for a Sonic Retro podcast special focusing around discussion of the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Participants this time around include Tweaker, InstantSonic, Spexfox, JackSkellinghog, Slingerland, Aquaslash, Katzu Niku, and David the Lurker. We're a bit late for making the Super Bowl, but Instant was a bit sick and needed to eat more RINGS.

A bit of a heads up—this one is a bit longer than the most, clocking in at about two hours. Also, my sound quality sucks this time around for no good reason. Sorry about that! Hopefully you enjoy our extensive coverage of the things on the table right now when it comes to Sonic 4; we tried to cover as many elements of the game as possible, though an obvious classic bias would be expected from Sonic Retro. ;P

    Check it out!

Sorry, eating RINGS is hard to do when you're sick. Produces more mucus.

He was Robotnik for a long time in Japan as well. Given the current canon, it makes sense for Sonic to say Robotnik but for Robotnik to say Eggman. He wants to be called Eggman, so why is Sonic honoring that desire?

Edit: And his design changed during Sonic Pocket Adventure.

Just finished listening to the podcast. Everyone's points were pretty well stated for the most part. Good job on this one, guys. There's something I wanted to bring up that was mentioned in it, but I think it fits the actual Sonic 4 topic better, so I posted it there.

Though, if any of the staff thinks it should be moved here instead, that's fine.

I liked this podcast, it raises a lot of points that sadly sega and most of it's fanbase will probably never acknowledge. Either because it doesn't reach them, or they simply don't want to spend 2 hours listening.
Anyway good goin' I like these things

    Oh fuck no

I really have to agree with the point made that the modern design isn't bad in itself, its just that it happens to be the face of failure. I tried making this point myself on the forums some time ago as well.

    Just finished listening.

It was suggested at one point in the podcast that Sega might be trying to gauge the reaction of fans with Sonic 4 before they decide what to do next. I have to say I'm very sceptical about this, not least because Sega's explicitly stated that they're continuing with business as usual (as I think Tweaker pointed out), but also because I have a hard time believing that there won't be a console Sonic for the 20th anniversary.

I find it very improbable that whatever this game is, it's not already pretty far along in development (in fact, Sonic 4 might be Sega's way of distracting us from something much larger right around the corner). Remember, the Sonic 4 team seems to be headed up by Iizuka, who (to my understanding) was sort of demoted after ShTH's failure. Sonic 4 screams side project to me, is all.

Which begs the question, what will 2011 bring?

Actually, I think it was NiGHTS: JoD's failure that sweeped him under the rug. ShTH wasn't a great game, but it sold very well across all three major platforms of the time. JoD did abysmal in Japan, and while it did better in the west, the game barely managed to break even, or so I heard.

I just don't understand the logic or politics behind any of these Sonic Team games. I mean, doesn't Sega force deadlines on Sonic Team to pump games out? It's like Sega is still working with the notion that Sonic Team can complete a game around or a little over a year, like making games for the Genesis/Megadrive.
