It would be cool as hell to have alternative vehicles though. I'm holding out for hope for the air boards returning.
I got no doubt in my mind that they'll have the Extreme Gear in this game. They wouldn't just openly tease that for nothing. The problem is that it's going to control exactly like the cars do which misses the entire point of why Riders fans like Riders
I don't think anyone wants an on-foot Sonic racer that plays like a kart racer. The characters playing like cars is a common complaint about Sonic R. ASRT > any Mario Kart
Sonic Team really needs to add multiplayer to the Boost games already, so that these can fucking die.
What is an on-foot Sonic racer supposed to play like? I would prefer Frontiers 2 just have a solid multiplayer mode and that the kart racer have karts so I can crash into dudes and hip check them when I drift etc. I feel like all the level design and mechanics a good on-foot Sonic racer would necessitate would be wasted on just a racing game.
I will say I'm happy this has been confirmed. I love the Sonic kart games and I found the main problem with TSR the whole team mechanic which they have seemingly dropped. Its clear they put a lot of effort into the team mechanics but I just don't think they were fun on a conceptual level. I do hope if they theme it purely around Sonic they go a bit wild with the callbacks. My main problem is how dull TSR was in its characters and settings. If they have to go cross dimensions to pull in from Classic and Modern I'd be happy with that. I think Runners and even Superstars is a good standard for a kind of game like this. On this topic, I know I'm unusual in thinking this but I really hope they don't use wisps for weapons. They are so boring. Can't we have iconic Sonic items like shield monitors, or even badniks like motobugs or something. I also hope they can get the quality high. TSR was a good game marred by a questionable design underpinning. I'm hoping if they do make this a classic kart racer they can make it play well and have sophisticated maps. I know Transformed had a large budget and is extremely good but something close to that would be great.
I personally don't mind another racing game. Crossworlds makes me think of some kind of multiverse-esque gimmick, so that should be pretty interesting. And I am one of the few that actually enjoyed Team Sonic Racing.
I don't really expect them to put the hoverboards in this game and even if they do I doubt it'll really capture the same appeal that a standalone Riders 4 would have. I'm still hoping one day they lock in and make a Riders game with a stylized cel shaded artstyle. With today's tech you could make a stylized game that looks like no other game ever made and it feels like developers have barely scratched the surface so far. Maybe Okami 2 will scratch this itch for me
- The tweet / only current lead that Hardlight is developing this game has been deleted. Which could be due to being incorrect OR being revealed too soon. - Midori / Ryan who's had a proven track record saying that there's a Mobile Sega All Stars Tennis (Likely Hardlight) and a Sumo Digital developed Sega All-Stars title Look even if this isn't called Sonic & Sega All Stars, if Crossroads is just another SEGA crossover anyway that's developed by Sumo Digital that'll work with me lol
The TGA Tweet was probably deleted because they called it Sonic Racing Crossroads when it's Sonic Racing CrossWorlds lmao.
I'll be real, did NOT notice that typo. But then I'm just curious why they haven't reuploaded it by now.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, the latest entry in the beloved series of SEGA racers. Drift Across Dimensions! Race across land, sea, air, space, and time in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds! Ok what else could this refer to? Ok tell me if I'm looking too deep into this but...what? Wouldn't "latest in entry in the beloved series of Sonic racers" make sense if this was the sequel to Team Sonic Racing specifically? But SEGA racers...well you already know what that would refer to OR...does this refer to the entire SEGA backlog of Racing Games, period? --- I accept that I'm overthinking but if CROSS-WORLDS is a CROSSOVER, what else would they CROSSOVER with? I mean if it's just a game mechanic then Crossroads would make sense. But WORLDS? Could be a way of saying "Various SEGA IPs"...well to me anyway
While I'm still open to this being a crossover game, I think Sega racers is just how they identify the Sumo/Hardlight racing games in which Sonic uses the Speed Star and there's a lot of Seaside Hill. Which initially started with All Stars Racing, but has evolved (or rather devolved) into Sonic Racing.
Well that's deeply reductive and shortsighted. These games don't exist just to have a multiplayer 3D Sonic vehicle, because that's clearly not the niche these are filling (and Speed Simulator would already be taking that space if that were the case). These exist specifically for Sonic to have a mascot kart racer as part of his brand because Mario does gangbusters with it. Further, this fills space between the main games and is hopefully assisting in Sonic Team enjoying a healthy development cycle with their current project. If we just killed Sonic spinoffs, we'd either go back to rushed slop or feeling the kind of drought that was the years between Team Sonic Racing and Frontiers. And frankly, I don't know why you'd advocate for less variety in a franchise as big and regular as this. If you don't like them, just don't play them?
Why wouldn't a standalone on-foot racer be considered a spin off? Zeph is just saying they have the blue prints for an on-foot racer already. He's not advocating for less variety, he's advocating for more, especially in the racing genre. Everyone else hops on a kart, Sonic could capitalize on being a platformer/racer.
