I see this a lot all over the place and while, yes, it makes tons of sense for a game that should exist in this franchise, the answer is extremely simple: A character sitting in a car has to be animated holding the wheel, leaning, throwing, cheering, and grumbling, along with a couple animations where they pop out of the driver's seat and do a little fortnite dance when they win/do trick. Most of the time, the character's lower body doesn't even need to move because you can barely see above their chest. A character on foot would need full body animations for everything that a video game character does in a non-racing game and it would have to look GOOD. Long gone are the days of Sonic R where half the cast could essentially float static over the racetrack while everyone else did Baby's First Blender Run around the course. Even if they were to make a racer with 12 characters, that's still an abysmally low number for a mascot racer AND a ton more work than the average Sonic game when it comes to animating brightly colored hedgehogs. That doesn't mean it's impossible, obviously, but Sonic exists as a stable, low-budget relatively-high-return money farm for SEGA first and foremost and that's probably a lot more work than they're willing to put into a game that probably couldn't even be advertised as "the next big Sonic game".
I don't care enough to speculate about this. Teaser trailers are fine, but there's literally nothing to this. It might as as not exist until we get more news. Honestly, what's the point here? It's hardly enough to tickle the fancy of fans, and it's not exactly going to excite anyone else either.
Mostly agree with this. The title is enough to inspire a little bit of intrigue (and I hope azoo is correct about it basiclly being into the Sonic-verse even though he definitely is wrong), but stuff like the comparison between the gear on the wall and the R from TSR just reminds me of how the big cope with TSR was "what if you get on-foot AND cars" in the exact same way as "what if there are boards AND cars" right now. Them calling it "Sega's greatest action racing game ever" is kinda funny though.
Would an on-foot racer really be that much more expensive than karts? Sonic Forces Speed Battle exists and it has plenty of characters just fine, sure the animations for each character aren't unique or amazing, but it's fine for what it is. Even in Sonic Riders they animated the characters holding their board and running when you run out of gas, they didn't have to do that. I think the actual reason why is because kart racing is the safer option for making a racing game with colorful mascot characters. The sales and reception for the last 3 games were probably good enough to overshadow probably any other Sonic racing game that came before it (Riders, Rivals, R), and karts are inherently more accessible and easier for people to understand because Mario Kart is so insanely successful. Still I would love to see another try for an on foot Sonic racing game one day.
Thing is, it's all aesthetic. You could make a game that plays identically to TSR and just have the models and animations resemble the characters running on-foot, and I think that would satisfy a ton of people. I mean, maybe it'd look a bit "Sonic mod for Mario Kart 8", but the comments on those mods always say "this is what <insert Sonic racing game here> should have been like!". Is it all just for consistency? I've said this about playable characters, too. If everyone were just a skin for Sonic without any of their unique abilities, but still had their own stages and a role in the games' stories, I don't think the 2010s uproar over solo-Sonic games would ever have been nearly so pronounced. Not saying this is better than a varied game where each character interacts with the terrain differently, or that a platformer racer isn't a better fit for Sonic than basic bitch kart racing, but they make certain things a lot harder on themselves than they needed to.
gonna be honest I don't get the appeal of an on-foot Sonic racing game if it just plays like a kart racer anyways? I feel like the demand for this could be mitigated if they added multiplayer modes into the boost games. Kart racing makes sense for optics and marketing, the average consumer sees Sonic driving a car and understands "okay this is gonna be a different genre from a typical Sonic platformer" and I guess canonically Sonic just likes cars lol
If this is the only game next year, it seems like Sega is really taking time for the Frontiers follow up. This seens like a really safe thing to make as filler.
I've already given up hope on going back to on foot racers. I'm just hoping this gets some actual long term support with character and track updates. Hardlight seems oddly dedicated to Sonic Racing, a 4 year old Apple Arcade exclusive, for whatever reason. So if it ends up being revealed they are the ones developing CrossWorlds then I at least have some hope in that regard.
For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure Sonic Racing didn't see any significant content/feature updates for multiple years until basically just this year where they started adding costumes which didn't seem to exist before (only extra racer was Classic Sonic and a Green Hill stage). And after this announcement, I guess this new game is probably part of why they're doing those updates.
Not functional, but someone found one of the official sites, with a liiiittle bit of info in its description: Yeah, "drift across dimensions". While their place alongside "space and time" makes me skeptical, I wouldn't mind at all if "land, sea, air" implied them literally bringing back the vehicle transformations from ASRT.
Oh hell yeah. I guess if it worked before wouldn't hurt to try again. Surely at worst it'll be mediocre.
I don't think it means that, I think this racing game is going to have some sorta portal mechanic where you travel though those big rings and end up in a alternative version of the track.
I love this. It's like the Sonic Cycle of the late noughties but for kart racing. I could not give a toss about Team Sonic Racing. I did not give a toss about Sonic Racing ***~~~A P P L E A R C A D E E X C L U S I V E~~~*** I do not give a toss about Crossworlds.
Maybe he wants a break from running around all the time. Besides the ability to jump (which you could just add to the cars), I don't see what the big deal is with taking Sonic out of the car if he'd just have car controls anyway.
