So I was just wasting my time all day with SonEd2. Typically I can't get it to work well with all the art I try to put in. Anyway, after what's been probably 8 hours today I suddenly remembered: Sonic Mettrix was a game designer too! In fact, I so often overlook that SonEd2 has an option to export files for Mettrix's EO1 editor. Of course the documentation is a bit for me to get in one day, though I can see the similarities with SonEd2 already.

Anyway, my point is, this editor seems fully capable of producing some pretty good games. Everybody's been waiting for Retro Sonic forever now, and ProSonic is finally getting a release. But this has been out there for quite awhile now. Even the project Stealth was making for it lets you notice how much you can do with this thing. Yet, I don't believe I have heard of a single person ever using this thing, EVER. What is up with that? I know one answer I'll get it that SonEd2 lets you make your stuff playable on a genesis, but surely at the least anybody that was looking forward to Retro Sonic was looking for an editor that's for a pc game. Is there anyone in the community that has at least had a look at this engine?

I've known of it myself forever now, but I got too caught up by SonEd2 and the more mass amount of users that use it(rather, the whole community here), so I can see how some can go that path. But I'm sure some that have known Stealth at least have fiddled with this thing a bit, right? I'm just curious if anyone has like ever touched this thing..

And on the subject, is there any news that Stealth is still working on this game? Looking at all the levels that were implemented in already(which seem to be only accessible through the level editor), it seems a lot of work went into it. I'm out of touch with all the past events here so if it's sort of known that Stealth left or something feel free to yell at me :p

Isn't Project Mettrix DOS based? It's been a long time since I've looked at it though...

You mean MOST of the community. I, for one, prefer not to be restricted by SonED2's pointless restrictions, which in turn bar creativity, and good use of screen space! :)

Project Mettrix does sound interesting, though. Never tried it, but I might give it a shot...

    This is sarcasm, right?

    There's a DOS version, but there's also a Win32 version.

Sonic Mettrix was interesting for me back when I tried it for the first time when it had its (last) booth at SAGE06.
It's not much different from what RetroSonic and ProSonic are, except that the scripts seem to be in text (correct me if I'm wrong).
Yeah, I'm surprised that this thing has been out for so long and nobody has used it for serious things.
I've never fiddled with it myself, but there are a lot of documentation files in it, and making a fangame with it is definitedly possible.

Holy crap, somebody gives a damn?

Well, you might be happy on the 17th, then, because you'll find me at SAGE with a new E02 build. I've been quite busy, but I haven't forgotten about E02, Project Mettrix, or Triple Threat. I've been able to make a bit of progress in the last couple of months, and I was actually getting ready to emphasize the editability, since it's never been taken seriously before. A couple of the documents have already been updated to HTML form in reference to the restructure that will be included in another upcoming release. The core "Sonic" structure of the Project Mettrix script set has been improved and more-well-rounded, which you'll be able to see in the new demo

At the same time, my site will re-launch with a new design. That's somewhat off-topic, but there are a couple of other things I've been working on that should show up there at one point or another

Also, there seems to be a bit of confusion between E02, E01, and Project Mettrix. I named the new engine I'm creating E02, because it was the third in it's family. That's why I've been calling the original Project Mettrix "E01". Now, I intend to move Project Mettrix to E02, because it's more stable and more versatile, but E02 isn't strictly for "Project Mettrix". "Project Mettrix" has become it's own Sonic engine within E02, which will be used for that particular game, but can be made into other, unrelated Sonic games. (SonED2 dumps E02-compatible level files intended for use with this version.) The E02 engine itself is more open-ended, as demonstrated by "Triple Threat", the Megaman game that's also in development with it

E01's original development was primarily DOS, but it received a Windows port near the end of development, and E02 has also been compiled for both systems

So, just sit back for a few more days. E02 is coming back :)

    Nice to see you back.
Is there going to be a DOS version of this new build?
The latest version's DOS build was very buggy when it came to video, I tried it on several videocards and sometimes the player character had scrambled graphics that were not for it (letters). It worked fine on DOSBox, though.
If you're going to release a DOS version again this time, has that been fixed?

I don't know how Project Mettrix has been ignored, heck, even the article on Sonic Retro's Wiki was empty. I really enjoyed that game when I first played it a few years ago. But I never knew it came with a Editor.

I'm glad you said something, Stealth...we got a little advance notice of what you just wrote and ran with it Friday...and then was asked to remove it from public view because no one knew if you were OK with the info being out there or not.

So, Tweaker...he's alive then, yes? :)

Wow Mettrix is something I haven't touched in forever. I remember loving that game a ton though. If a new version will ever exist that'd be awesome.

I recall playing with Project mettrix a while back. It'll be cool to see a new version of E02.

Project Mettrix has been a 'sleeper' for the community for ages now...
It's great that Stealth is going to take it out of hybernation.

    Ohshi Stealth posted :O

I don't think it's that no one noticed it, it was that it was never really finished. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Yeah, I love mettrix, and I hate how you can't get past act 2 on the old E01 one.

Wow, this was totally unexpected. That's great that the engine and game are both still alive! I guess I actually have a reason to look forward to SAGE after all now :D

It's funny you should mention that it will actually be able to go beyond just a Sonic engine. I've actually been wanting to get away from just sonic and do something else, but of course with the limitations of hacking that was something too beyond my skill unless I wanted to do asm. So this means the engine will have a form of scripting of sorts so people can make their own game engines(Edit: through review of the history of this project I guess that is the case :D )

I look forward to the day Mettrix is actually finished. As mentioned above it really is much a sleeper hit, and I can't recall it making much news whenever it came out. Considering it's the most original fan-game I think I've played too, it feels like waiting for a whole new game. I know I read that the music is going to be converted from those WinGroove midi conversions to Yamaha XG synth files, but I hope that doesn't mean the current soundtrack is going to disappear as it has a certain charm to it. I'd go far as saying the somewhat ancient-sound of the conversion you get makes it feel like an old DOS game, which IMO just gives the game much more charm than anything else I've played.

Good luck on the project Stealth

E02, Project Mettrix, and Triple Threat at SAGE 2008

Check out the new site, including the E02 page I've been meaning to build since forever. Downloads are on each of the 2 game pages, a large image link at the top-right

Stealth, you are epic D: !

I never tried E02, and I have to say, it's awesome. I felt like I was playing a Sonic 1 hack, when I played GHZ in Mettrix.
