It isn't even that, it's just not particularly good, even for a cartoon. My complaints don't revolve around continuity things exclusively.

Is the issue that this show is being perceived as "strictly for kids", or that the medium is? If it's the former, that's fine? It's okay for some things to be aimed squarely at kids. If it's the latter, who even believes this? How is someone believing that even worth taking seriously when things like The Simpsons, South Park, The Venture Bros., Primal, etc. exist?

My dad refuses to watch anything animated, as he maintains it's for kids. They exist, don't kid yourself.

Then I reiterate: how are they worth taking seriously?

I wasn't even arguing with you in that post, what I was saying is that Sonic Prime has nothing to do with sanitization of animation

This conversation is just bizarre. This started because I said putting Omega/Blaze/whoever would make the cast too cluttered for kids*, which is true. I've already pointed out that shows like SU started off small-scale before gradually expanding, which no one cared to engage with. And now it's escalated into some sorta slapfight over how mature kids shows should be. I get there's a problem with non-comedic animation not being taken seriously but I'm not really sure if this is the thread for it. I don't think anyone here thinks Prime is amazing or even great, it certainly could be better, just that its one of the better Sonic shows which is a more defensible claim.

*Would also apply to the adults watching the show who aren't hardcore fans, granted there's probably not a lot of them lol. Blaze and Omega have been out of the spotlight for well over a decade @_@

  6. I feel like saying this show is bad because its not up to the same standard of writing to Batman TAS is a huge exaggeration.

By this logic, any show that isn't up to those standards also "isn't particularly good as a cartoon".I

Because they're vocal about it, and can get into positions of power that can affect the industry.

For instance, Bob Chapek, the Walt Disney Company's former CEO, who sated while he was CEO: "Our fans and audiences put their kids to bed at night after watching Pinocchio, Dumbo or Little Mermaid, then they’re probably not going to tune in to another animated movie, they want something for them.

Apparently animated movies just aren't something for adults.

Or it's simply an example of many how one can go about doing a really good cartoon, and I could have also argued for Gargoyles, Gravity Falls, etc, but simply focused on Batman: The Animated Series since it's been around the longest and I feel would be the most familiar to everyone here.

If you're all going that way... The fact I LOVE anime and my parents still treating them as stuff for kids irks me to no end.
Animated shows don't need to be for kids alone. Adults can enjoy them and make them enjoyable for many age ranges.
They can be mainly targeted at kids, but have a degree of depth and appeal to varying age ranges. It all depends on who creates and produces them.

What's wrong with a story about anthros beating an egg-shaped mad scientist time and again having depth and drama alongside fun and goofiness?
As long as people keep making such division between medias there'll always be arguments like this one. There has to be a middle ground for us all...

And, yet, despite both Chapek and your father being factually wrong, since adult-aimed Western Animation exists, they continue to be factually wrong as adult-aimed Western Animation continues to be made. So I again wonder how their opinions are worth much.

But also, Chimpo lamented that Sonic Prime isn't "helping change anyone's minds" on this matter. And, well, what is supposed to help change minds on the matter if they're not going to give legitimate counter-examples a chance anyway? If nothing is going to changes minds on the matter, then what additional damage is Prime actually doing by being aimed at 6 year olds?

  10. The point stands; not everyone is out to creative a subversive piece of media nor does anyone need to do that.

They literally just did? If you think the plot is bad or whatever, that’s one thing, but this cartoon is heavy on continuous plot, all episodes are connected, there is clear goal that characters wants to achieve “gather the shards” , things happening in one episode have effects on other episodes, there is an ongoing plot in the New Yoke City, Shadow is trapped in the void as a consequence for things that happened in the beginning etc

Being more comedy-oriented and less dark does not mean the show is not heavy on plot -and BTAS for example was way more episodic than you people realize, it didn’t make it bad or aimed at babies or whatever-

Yeah, you got me there. When writing that post I was thinking of shows like Avatar or SU, which had more complex plots, but again, those shows had multiple seasons to develop to that point. Sonic Prime's plot is simple, but more complex than something like X, Boom, or AOSTH. Maybe it'll develop into something more weight-y but I wouldn't bet on it, I'm a cynical guy :P

Also I don’t get the point about this show somehow not catering to fans or whatever , just cause Blaze aint there or something, like are we just pretending that Big and Rouge are those very recognizable characters in the same vein as Tails and Knuckles? That’s without even talking about the various references to the games that kids won’t understand, just something as simple as “1992” being Tails password is not something any kid will get, even Knuckles flashback with the callback to genesis games and music, among other things

Things can both be aimed at kids and also aimed for fans, i mean the whole franchise is aimed at kids let’s be real :V it’s not one way or the other, and being disappointed about absence of some elements doesn’t make the whole thing “not aimed at fans” at some capacity

Does the fact that someone who thinks that got into a position of power in the de facto animation company not indicate that it's something to be concerned about, or do we have to wait until there's one as CEO of every animation company, strangling every adult animation to death before it's something to raise an eyebrow at?

I'm not asking for subversive, I'm asking for GOOD. Is that such a tall ask?

Not where I want to be.
Sonic (?): Coming summer of 2055...?
I guess it's not, but I have to wonder what you get out of arguing with people that do enjoy it for what it is. I'll try not to take some of your comments about who must enjoy this personally either :V

"Good" is subjective. Sonic Prime is good. But then, Steven Universe is also just "good" to me. Gumball is great and can do no wrong. Megas XLR is phenomenal. I don't want us to veer off into a "This is shit" vs "No you're shit" kind of back and forth. Can we keep our discussion centered around the actual show, and not the meta-criticism of children's cartoons and the perceived quality thereof?

I'm simply explaining my point of view on the matter and how I think Sonic Prime could be so much more.

Did I make a comment insulting people who enjoy Sonic Prime? If so, I'm sorry, please could you advise which comments in particular so I may modify how I approach it to avoid such issues in future discourse, as I did not mean to?

When I saw the trailer I thought this show looked terrible. They made it look like a generic movie trailer that has bad jokes like everything post MCU. So I went into this show expecting an absolute steaming pile of my cat's dinner and got something that was entertaining enough to watch for a couple hours.
Best I could say is Sonic is big again. I think this show is a good way to get kids hooked into the series after watching the movies. Can't let people breathe after-all or they might forget to come back for more of the blue rat.
Something else to remember is that many of the people who were kids when Sonic 1 first came out are old enough to have their own, so of course there will be winks to older audiences without being some deep cut iceberg theory for diehard fans.

Exactly! They’ve thrown in a TON of things for the fans. When i saw “1992” I knew that was only the beginning of the fan service. I thought it was neat to see another interpretation of Sonic taking care of Tails’ bullies when they first met (In pseudo Green/Emerald Hill) and the HPZ fight with Knuckles. I mean we are talking sprite cartoons in a real damn show and not YouTube/TikTok. I also want the raw, extended music tracks!

Which didn't happen prior to Sonic Origins in any medium, so not quite fanservice as much as a nod to that collection.

You know, I keep seeing this mentioned but isn't Tails being bullied by the other animals for his two tails in the JP Sonic 2 manual? Yeah they didn't specify it was two bullies who did it but it's not a brand new invention.
