Hey everyone. A lurker finally making a post. So, I've been working on a fangame called Sonic Panic off and on for about 10 years now. I've had some help from other coders back in the early days of SFGHQ, but it's been a solo project since 2010 or so. The game is about 80-90% complete now and I hope to have it finished by the end of summer. Mainly, the game is meant to look and feel like the Genesis games as much as possible, with most inspiration coming from Sonic 2 and Sonic CD. In this game, Robotnik has set up teleporters all over the world in order to build his empire in a flash. Sonic and crew set out to stop him. So far, the game has 10 zones, 9 of which are completed. Panic Precipice Zone (100% complete) Green field style quintessential first Sonic level. Forest Freeway Zone (100% complete) Towering trees, a maze of knotholes and leaves. Snowstorm Shuffle Zone (100% complete - Currently overhauling) A snowy mountain. Get snowboards from the monitors! Starworld Zone (100% complete) A space themed carnival. Ride in rockets and grab onto UFOs! Underground Zone (100% complete) The first level from Sonic 2 on Game Gear and Master System, reimagined. -Secret- (100% complete) --- I want to leave this zone as a surprise, but it's a throwback to an obscure older Sonic title. Railroad Zone (100% complete) Ride trains, run along the tracks, blow up machinery. Eggman Empire Zone (100% complete) Take on Metal Knuckles, Puppet Tails, and Metal Sonic in a rundown old city. Aireal Aeolian Zone (100% complete) Clouds! Cosmic Crackers Zone (100% complete) (Needs original music) Spaceship! Techno Terror Zone (Work in progress) --- The final zone. For reasons you'll see later, I need to finish all of the assets for previous zones before working on it. Finale! _______________________________________________________________ DOWNLOAD THE SAGE DEMO HERE! _______________________________________________________________ As you can see, most of the game is finished. From now on, I need to finish act 2 and 3 of Starworld Zone and the secret zone. Then, the final zone. After that, it will be an issue of tweaking menus, adding a save system, and a better pause screen. That's all. It'll be finished. I'm hoping to finish it for the next SAGE, whenever that may be. So, feel free to let me know what you think. Last but not least, this game only has about 5 unique music tracks. I'm looking for some people who might like to put together the rest of the OST and give the soundtrack an original feel. Hit me up if you're intersted! Either on here, or twitter @mega_spit. Thanks! EDIT: Updated with more screenshots, updated info on which zones still need BGM.
Wow, haven't seen this in ages. Glad to see some old game surfacing again. Love Metal Robotnik there.
I'm pretty interested in this one. I've been working on a game based on the Game Gear games, and was considering a train level as a shoutout to Sunset Park's boss fight. It'll be nice to see an example of how to set something like that up. Also loving Underground Zone. We really need more done with the Game Gear ideas, they never seem to get any attention.
Thanks for the comments, guys! I spent a lot of time on those Metal Robotnik sprites. Hours of pausing frames on the OVA and trying to redraw him as accurately as possible. Haha Right on! The game gear games definitely don't get enough love. The train level is probably my favorite out of any zone I've made. The first act is a pretty standard zone in a trainyard, but the second act takes place running along the top and insides of the train while the camera moves along on it's own (think bridge zone style) while the third act is a constantly-running act while you run alongside the train on the tracks. It feels like three different zones and probably took the most work out of any of the zones in the game.
Hey, nice seeing you're still around! Hell, hit me up if you just want to chat sometime. Been forever.
Is this the same fan game that used to be called Sonic 4? What happened with the original Sonic sprites you used before?
It is. I decided a while ago that they really clashed with the classic-as-possible looking tilesets and stuff I've been using since I changed the name and started using a new engine. I still may include those custom sprites in the options menu. (Oldschool vs 360 sprite rotation is already in the options, thinking of adding Sonic 3 sprites to the options as well) Anyway, I'm preparing a new demo for you guys using the train level. EDIT: I can also add that Starworld Zone is now complete, leaving just the secret zone and the final zone to be finished.
Thanks! I also gave the music in your sig a listen. I love it. Let me know if you'd ever consider making a track or two for the game! I'd give you credit and link to your stuff for sure.
I could probably whip up a track for you, been messing around with some Sonicish stuff lately. Shoot me a message if you wanna chat about it. Your game looks really nice and polished, I'm looking forward to playing it in any case!
I sent you a PM! Also, updated the zone listing in the opening post to show which zones still need BGM. I could always re-use some older Sonic tracks, or even tracks from other games, but what's the fun in that?
This looks pretty good, nice work! Good luck with the rest of the game, I like what I've seen so far.
Updated the OP with new screenshots. I found people to make some new BGM for the zones Forest Freeway, Snowstorm Shuffle, and Aerial Aeolian as well, so I took those off of the list.
