Sonic Origins - Known Issues

    On another subject, it is odd how Amy’s hammer run lets her go up slopes and through loops in every game except S3&K, where she comes to a stop instead.

    I sat down and played through Sonic 3 and Knuckles again, but only the first 5 Zones, and stopped at the start of Launch Base Zone Act 1. I've noted every issue that I encountered, as long as the issue wasn't already in the original game. Please not that some of this very nit-picky, but there's enough here to make the experience less than the one I think we deserved.

    Menu
    • Characters are misaligned on the save slots
    • Tails uses an incorrect rotating palette on the All Clear save slot icon
    • Amy and Tails and Amy Alone options are crammed between Sonic and Tails and Sonic Alone
    General
    • Music restarts after getting a 1-up
    • The starpost uses the wrong frame when spinning after being touched
    • There's no option to quit out of the game when in a Bonus or Special Stage
    • You cannot pause the game in certain conditions, and so have to wait in order to quit out
    • Continuous sound effects (airship, fans, etc.) are no longer continuous and stop/start repeatedly while playing
    • You can stand on the corner of edges even when a door is closed above
    • Springs under monitors can be triggered without breaking the monitor
    • Collision detection acts like Mania, whereby you can enter a small gap that is the same height as the height you get crushed, and you get killed by crushing for entering it
      • This is the cause of many unnecessary/additional crushing deaths in Sonic Origins and Mania compared to the original engine
    Angel Island Zone
    • You can get stuck in the small cave containing 2 10 rings and a 1-up in Act 1
    • The logs that fall from a waterfall are missing their long distance flag
      • As such, the 1-up at the start of Act 2 is very difficult to get as Sonic Alone
    • Act 2 moving platforms have a stationary orange on them instead of a rotating palette
    • Ducking to lower the camera before the Act 1 miniboss causes it to load in lower (on screen) with no hotbox for a second
    • The water logs on the surface in Act 2 rotate the wrong way
    • You can easily slow down and go backward in the tunnel before the fire bombing in Act 2
      • The camera stays locked at a lower point
    • The fire bombing airship is too low
    • Eggman behind the trees is too low
    Hydrocity
    • You can break out of the second underwater jet in Act 1 and land on the lower path by hugging the top left corner of the tunnel while being blown through it
    • You can outrun the camera, which looks really odd
    • The blocks that make up the fan blocks are no longer solid. This includes the stationary ones. As such, you can get between them and some spikes in Act 2
    Marble Garden
    • Due to a change in physics you don't roll into the tunnel containing the lightning shield at the start of Act 1
    • A wheel is supposed to move 2 platforms on an alternate path in Act 1, but only the bottom one moves
    • Spinning tops do not move properly
    • The Act 2 boss can be hit off screen before the cutscene and the fight starts
    Carnival Night
    • The magnetic rotating cylinders are sometimes very difficult to jump off of
    • The spiral tunnels are too slow
    • Trying to transform into Super/Hyper when above a barrel will cancel the transformation
    • The barrels have a couple of white pixels on the sides that look out of place
    • Horizontally and vertically moving barrels don't alternate their position relative to each other on a global timer any more
    Icecap
    • Sonic doesn't jump while on the snowboard in the same way, making the extra 10 rings really difficult to get
    • The pillars that rise, and then drop have an extra delay while they shake
    • The trampoline platforms have no limit to how far they can be stretched
    Launch Base
    • Tails' exclusive Launch Base Zone Act 1 path is inaccessible
    I may play through the rest of the game soon, but this was enough to make me stop playing. Quite frankly, I'm surprised the game was allowed to be released like this. And the fact that it's been a year since the initial release, and with some bugfixes applied, yet there's so much here that's not quite right.

    95% of people aren’t going to notice half of those problems. And some I think are intentional (the fire bombing ship being low for example, I think they wanted to show off more of the sprite. Outrunning the camera was likely intentional too, as there’s a code that turns that off).

    These retro engine remakes have never been 1:1. If you want a true to original experience, this ain’t it. A good amount of what you pointed out are problems, but I wouldn’t call them all “omg how’d this get released it’s slop” problems. This isn’t Gollum here lol.

    Bit of trivia, much like Amy in the clip there, when Sonic/Knuckles/Amy(?) go into their idle animation as a "win" pose in half the Boss Rushes, it's very easy to get them stuck in mid-air, I think either from moving terrain (Aquatic Ruin Zone's boss) or identifying collision on ran-up walls as ground? (Casino Night Zone's boss) It's odd it's not even a consistent win animation between the games and characters in Boss Rush.

    Tails not being able to access his hidden route is extremely bad, and I would prefer these games to function how I remember them functioning.

    And that’s one of the bigger issues yes. Not denying it has issues just I’d say it’s a far cry from unreleasable.

    Why are you discouraging him/her from posting issues in a known issues thread?
    The reality is that the Sonic 3 & Knuckles portion is unfinished.

    RE: Blue Spheres: Mania doesn't allow this either, and I suspect the behavior in the original S3K is the result of a bug. Stealth went over it a bit here. Here's also a relevant video:

    This is the Known issues thread. I don't quite know what you were expecting. I'm not bashing the game just because I feel like it. Yes, some of the issues listed are minor. And they may have been made deliberately, in order to improve the gameplay in some way. But they are still issues in comparison to the original game, and I felt they were worth mentioning.

    I have more an issue with there being some blatant issues here that do affect the game experience for everyone that should have been resolved a year after release, and they haven't. Examples include the random crush death from the final Eggman encounter in Marble Garden Zone Act 2, not being able to jump off of the rotating cylinders half of the time in Carnival Night Zone, and Tails' path in Launch Base Zone Act 1 being inaccessible. What makes these worse is that they are still here, after a year and several patches.

    And yes, the other Sonic games in the Retro Engine aren't perfect, but they at least fixed the key issues of the game within the first few patches, whereas Sonic 3 and Knuckles seems to be stagnant here, with little updated.

    @D.A. Garden Fair enough that’s what this thread is for. I’m more just tired of seeing people bitch about origins as if the originals are these pristine glitch free experiences. The same games of which one made up an excuse for bad collision in the manual and called it a feature.

    Just seems like people are demanding perfection from a series that has never been close to perfect, or they want origins to be a checklist of everything we’ve ever wanted, but this isn’t even for us it’s for casuals, scraped together because Sega wanted movie fans to know what’s going on. Yes, the route bugs are bad, CNZ rotating tubes suck too, I agree those should’ve been fixed. There are other things that bug me about origins too. But overall this collection does the job, even if it’s a tad shallow. The way some people talk about this collection you’d think they were talking about Sonic 4.

    I mean at least you tried to be productive with listing the issues I suppose, better than just “omg Amy’s colors aren’t Genesis accurate and the character select looks a tad stupid, trash/10.” But also we don’t know what the working conditions were like for headcannon and this. Maybe they wanted to fix the stuff but didn’t have the time? Or maybe they had to prioritize other fixes over others. If they were tasked with implementing Amy in all 4 games and Knuckles in CD, they probably didn’t get as much of a chance to work on S3K. They also had to address certain issues with Sonic 1 and 2, like the roll lock and knuckles spin dashing off a glide, and they added new paths to CD. I highly doubt they worked all year on this, I wouldn’t be surprised if they maybe had 6 months, if that. This isn’t the decomps or S3 AIR, they can’t just work on it casually forever for free slowly chipping away at the original’s faults and bugs. Like how long has the CD restored person been working on their mod? 2 or 3 years now? Maybe more?

    Having elements of the games intended design broken is not really the sort of thing you can excuse - Tails alternate route in Launch Base should have been fixed. Hopefully community mods can help clean up the observed issues in S3 Remaster

    This isn't a thread for casuals though. This is specifically an issues thread on Retro. Some people are going to be dramatic, but still, you have the wrong mindset for this thread.

    It’s very likely when I originally made the first post commenting on DA Gardens post, I thought that this was the main origins thread. From there I just figured I might as well keep going, already dug the hole :V

    I'd wager that Headcannon were the ones to suggest details like Knuckles getting his KIS2 title card back as their mentioned "additional updates and enhancements" they were allowed to make, but I do remember a Twitter discussion I had on if they handled Amy/SCD Knuckles themselves, someone pointing out their Tweets made it sound like they just provided the sprites for them. Did we ever get confirmation on that? I mean even with some inevitable glitches, the new characters are implemented very competently to be the work of a team that previously couldn't figure out how to implement the Drop Dash without just disguising a Spin Dash as it. But then again, the new SCD routes have sparked some mockery from fans for looking a bit off, weirdly put into Palmtree Panic's tiling and perhaps resembling Sonic Team's Forces/Mission Mode level design, or at least less naturally put into the existing environment.

    I just got a glitch in the Metropolis boss fight where the Eggman balloons survived after I beat the boss and they started to bounce towards the capsule and they touched me and I died and had to restart from the last checkpoint. Wild.
