I didn't call them glitches. I just said that they're things Origins is still "missing/doing wrong". There's no good reason for any of those things I listed, and I think just about everyone would agree that they'd be improvements (or at least beutral) rather than detrimental.

Well, he did include "doing wrong". Overall I'd say that most of these are still pretty minor. They should probably have the roms, they definitely should've had the MS versions, and they totally could have made versions of the proto tracks that don't suck. UI stuff and no lives in anniversary are more like little extra bits of annoyance on top of the bigger problems, it's just easier to notice small flaws while you're already dissecting bigger ones.

That being said, I think the absolute biggest issue with this game from the start was that horrible blur, so it's a big deal to me that they axed that.

Totally this. Origins of full of little issues and bigger issues. Most of the bigger ones have been patched out, but the package still feels sloppy and half-arsed agreed 14 months, a major DLC release and several patches down the line.

Pretty sure one of the reason they aren't doing roms for Classic Mode is the whole MJ Team music debacle with Sonic 3. They'd have to get a rom of 3&K and hack in the proto-prototype music they used in Origins, and that's way more work than Sega would probably want to do on this thing

Unpopular opinion time: I'm glad that classic mode is in the retro engine and that there are no genesis roms in this game. I can play Sonic 1-3k on a variety of crappy emulators made by Sega. I don't need or want it here. They can't seem to make the emulation experience nearly as good as running it on a Genesis, and not even as good as running it in a GENS emulator from the early 2000's. I don't need their inability to emulate genesis games tainting a collection of Retro Engine remakes. And that's all this is. (And if we're honest with ourselves from 2013 it's all we wanted.)

Honestly I would probably prefer not to have the game gear roms there either. We've already got them elsewhere and their game gear emulation is also bad.

I just did a S3&K CNZ runthrough and had 0 crushing deaths for once. It appears more of them may have been fixed.

But amusingly, when I died once during a 'proper' collision death (as in one caused by an actual mistake, not glitches), my electric shield was still on me when I respawned at the checkpoint. Pretty sure that's not in the original...

The fact that the GG "mono" and "filter" options have to be turned on/off in options implies that the odd sound emulation was intentional. It all sounds perfectly fine once you turn "mono" back on, but for some reason they decided to make "stereo" a default choice.

The aspect ratio issues was probably laziness, but that's fixed now. And the blur/toggle is a non issue now. This more or less fixes any of my major issues with the GG games beyond just straight up preferring the Master System roms for some titles.

We really should have been given Genesis Spinball, some version of 3D Blast (Saturn, please!), and Chaotix, but oh well. Heck, SegaSonic arcade too would've been nice, but alas. Those are not happening. It is what it is. At least 3D Blast Director's Cut can be easily played in Steam (which gameplaywise is vastly superior, just not in music or visuals), but I want better access to the Saturn versions so badly... (even Emulation remains a complex mess...)

Your arguments are kind of bad.

Classic mode should simply be the original roms, as close to the original experience as possible. SEGA have released competent emulations in the past, and just because they've also done poor jobs doesn't mean that we shouldn't hold them to a higher standard.

Classic mode as it currently exists in Origins is merely anniversary with lives switched on and a different aspect ratio. Both of those should be options within anniversary mode. You'd still get the experience you personally want, and with the roms the original experience would exist too. This is not a tall order.

I might finally buy Origins on Switch with my next paycheck. I passed it up originally because of the blurry image, and a variety of bugs that have since been patched.

Given the scope of this collection, it doesn't matter to me if each individual game isn't technically polished to a highly-impractical degree. But I do appreciate all of the bug fixes since Origins' launch, and now it's possible to look at the pixels clearly on the Switch's screen, so- now's my time to dip in, finally :)

    Working on my art!
The shields act funny. Sometimes they remain after death and I wonder if it’s due to a bug with how checkpoints save in origins.

And idk to me this package seems mostly together now. It’s still missing things but a lot of it is coming off as fan wish list now. Main exception for me is the music quality.

The only reason I agree with you is because delisting the original ROMS from any legal purchase is still a dick move.

Yep, already mentioned this bug above. It's no doubt tied to the checkpoint "save anywhere" feature bugging up, but oh well. What's funny is I didn't HAVE an electric shield when I returned to the checkpoint where it gave me one. It just randomly gave one back to me.

Still, I agree. With these patches, it's now very easy to recommend this collection to the general audience, outside of the really poor Carnival Night Zone Music. (I DGAF about Ice Cap/Launch base, or even the super music, as the original was repetitive/annoying too...)

Oh, the SCD music not using the mobile remasters still sucks as well.

I'm a bit disappointed that it took this long but they've fixed pretty much everything that bugged me besides the music and honestly I doubt most people will even notice. At this point it might as well be the definitive edition of the classic games I guess.

tbh the reason Sega won't include ROMs of S1-3K/CD (ISO in CD's case but you get it) is probably because they don't want to futz with the music in 3K. The music swaps for the remastered version are pitifully easy, doing it with a ROM is significantly harder.

Personally I think they should just bite the bullet anyway because there's no way they won't do more mini consoles, compilations, etc. that just use ROMs, and it'd probably behoove them to have a "master" ROM of Sonic 3 that was free of any legal issues, but admittedly I doubt it affects bottom line sales too much. All the same, it is weird how between the two Genesis minis for example I have the original versions of Sonic 1, 2, Spinball, 3D Blast, and even CD while 3K are conspicuously absent as usual.

They could just include the original versions of 1, 2 and CD while leaving 3K as remaster-only, but I'm sure it's the same logic behind not adding the MS versions of the GG games in just wanting a consistent feature set.

Cheat codes not simply being toggle-able menu options you can unlock with coins. :colbert:

If "Classic Mode" wasn't going to be the original experience (however imperfect due to Sega emulators), then it should simply not be in the collection at all. As is, it's basically just false advertising.

Honestly, I'd prefer this to no Genesis roms at all. It might be inconsistent, but hey that'd just be one more inconsistent thing about this collection.

    Here's my unpopular opinion:
Sega should focus more of that sweet Sonic Movie money on paying royalties to keep using the MJ Team music.

Are the physics in Sonic 3 still off and does it still give you an invisible "Cool" bonus from Mania?

A friend of mine might play through Sonic 3K for the first time, and I was gonna set him up with A.I.R. due to sloppy minor details like that.

Well, that and the music. Prototype Ice Cap isn't a terrible song, but the original is kinda sacred.

"Nearest Neighbor" essentially means pixel perfect, right?

I don't disagree, but I don't need "classic mode". I wanted a physical collection of the retro engine remakes.

Basically, yes. You get a perfectly sharp image now, no more blurring. People may rightly that "pixel perfect" isn't actually accurate to the Mega Drive games would have looked using the original hardware, but I'll take sharp edges over an inaccurate, smeared mess any day.

Super hot take here: I honestly prefer sharp pixel art. I'm very fond of the pixel art look of yesteryear, but I've never cared that much for the "accurate" look with blurring/CRT filters/scanlines/whatever, so I'm pretty happy they finally patched the option into Origins.

I just want 1, 2, and CD to have save systems. I certainly wouldn't mind updates/fixes for other things as well (especially 3&K's music), but the inability to earn and mess with clear saves (or a convenient cheats/extras menu) absolutely killed my desire to go back to Origins after my Anniversary Mode run.
