Yes. Every character keeps their rings after exiting a special stage in Sonic 2 in Origins.

Ah, thank you for that information. I haven't looked into Origins too much after it's initial drop since I was put off by the reports of the kinda messy Drop Dash implementation/Anniversary Mode only having the 'Coin' system in place. I don't mind the concept of a 'No Lives' system in place, but it's a bit of a shame if you do want to play with lives you're restricted to playing in a 4:3 ratio. It ends up feeling like the player is sort of artifically restricted to an inferior field of view.

Sadly I'm still not completely sold on Origins. I'm interested in seeing a port of 3K to the Retro Engine, but the rest of the package seems...very mixed.

Slightly a tangent, but kind of related:One of the neat things about Origins is that you can touch a lampost/star post in any game. And then click Start > Main Menu and then use the Continue option to quickly continue. And you'll go back to the last lampost/star post you passed with all your rings intact (in some games, you'll even keep your shields, but it's inconsistent). It's super handy for cancelling Super Sonic or for having a 'second go' on a tricky section where you took damage without losing all the rings you collected.

Has action/input lag always been a problem in Game Gear emulation, or is it once again just Origins and its Hedgehog Engine implementation? Just sucks this is an issue and affects the better GG games, I just wanna play them without several caveats. Don't know if it's something a patch could fix up either.

It's a Sonic Origins thing. A potato could emulate the Game Gear without those issues.

Yeah as it is right now there’s no real reason to bother with the GG emulation unless you really want to play them on the go on your Switch or something. Not surprised at how rough this emulation is, but it’s a shame that we didn’t even get the SMS games.

I think they avoid SMS purely because of the stolen song in Chaos

Didn't think of that. I honestly just assumed maybe they went with Game Gear as they always have in compilations outside of the Wii Virtual Console releases.

I don't think a similar song is all that much of an issue. Other ancient games have "stolen" songs before and never really had issues. Unless there's been actual legal trouble before, I think it's just a matter of keeping things uniform since most of the games are game gear exclusive.

My theory was always that undisclosed legal trouble was the reason the song was changed in the Game Gear version to begin with. It did come out a month later than the Master System version...

But afaik there's never been any evidence supporting that.

I mean, the evidence is right in the song, Gigapolis Zone everybody, they didnt replace it in GG for no reason

They avoided re-releasing S3K for the longest time because of rights issues surrounding the music, but continued to put out re-releases/collections of the other Mega Drive games. Even if the music was an issue in Chaos SMS, that alone wouldn't stop them from releasing the other SMS titles. The SMS version could even be emulated with outside music streamed to replace the offending track. They did this already for all of the music in Classic Collection DS. We see similar modifications through the emulator for the strobing effects in the GG games already.

The reason for the lack of SMS versions of simple; it's easier to keep everything under one banner of consistency. Even though the various versions of the games can be quite different to play sometimes, they're ultimately supposed to be the same product. SEGA isn't bothered about preservation, accuracy or providing the best experience.

personally i think its a mix, Chaos has a stolen song, so they cant use that, iirc 2 SMS did too? and some games are GG only, so its a win win, no copyright issues, no missing games

You could argue that, but the "stolen" tracks are ultimately a moot point.

I'm guessing the GG games are solely there, so they can up the game count from 4 to 16 to make it look more like a 'value for money' package.

They've barely put any effort in to the GG games.
So they probably weren't willing to spend any time emulating the MS games, which would not help to increase the game count.

They've not added any other emulated titles (e.g. no non-Sonic GG games as unlockable bonuses, and no MD titles like Spinball/3D blast). So it looks like they were just trying to do the barest minimum to up the game count.

Depends how deep you wanna dive into it. Definitely a lot of songs that have questionably legal samples in them, but that might qualify as a different thing than a "stolen" theme.
