Sonic Origins Collection - General Thread

    Amy's gameplay admitedly looks rather uninspired sadly. Sonic but with a double jump and a hammer attack made utterly superfluous by being able to roll and even spin dash. Really feels like THE most generic approach they could have went for and makes Origins Plus feel like a bigger rip off.

    I was really hoping that playing as Amy would add a totally fresh experience to playing the old games again. Like sure adding her Advance 1 gameplay would likely be too complex, but they could have done one better than just Sonic with a permanent lightning shield SURELY.

  3. I feel like the goal and intent was to streamline her gameplay to be more in line with the Classics than with Advance, the latter of which is a modern title and has a bit more complex controls.

    Yeah, but....a double jump? Couldn't they do something a little more....creative with her?

    Like even giving her the bubble shield bounce over the lightning shield one would be more compelling to gain height and would actually call back to her downward slam in the Advance games.

    Rolling I understand, but I feel like Amy shouldn't have had a spin dash either. It makes her having a hammer feel redundant. Giving her a peel out/upward dash would have at least been more varied while still giving her a speed boost ability and also incentivised using her hammer, similar to Knuckles' bad jump height incentivising climbing.

    I assume they will as they have the models they're using in super stars right there, might end up with Nack/Fang showing up where ever the game gear stuff is.
     
  6. Like I said, the goal wasn't to make her "unique" or "interesting", but to give uniformity with her moveset to the other three characters.

    Its always been apparent that unless there's levels that specifically take advantage, there's not much unique about the other characters in the Classic games aside from Knuckles, who gets exclusive levels.

    Amy playing like a reskin of Sonic felt inevitable to me because this isn't a Modern 2D game with expanded movesets, this is a Classic game.

    Having having completely different movement options goes against that uniformity I mentioned.

    Amy's model was briefly seen in the recent embarrassingly bad live stream on the official Sonic YT channel. With the reveal of Superstars since then, I'm fairly hopeful that Knuckles will get his dues also. The original menus did the absolute bare minimum, which is why the character models and animations are 99% asset flips.

    So it's been confirmed.

    Sonic Origins Plus physical media only includes the base game content. All Plus stuff has to be downloaded through the included QR Code.

    I, of course, cancelled my preorder.

    I don't understand this logic. The DLC will be tied to their account, but not the base game. In other words, you'll need the cartridge regardless. How does this make for easy access? The "future updates" part doesn't make any sense at all.

    Yeah especially when presumably Plus will be it for Origins outside of additional bug patches. I'm PC for mod support anyway, but I get the frustration and Origins for some reason had to be the perfect storm of money-gauging tactics whilst being sloppy in delivering.

    And while I'm splitting hairs to find discussion, Origins sure is just "GG games and Amy" to people. Knuckles' SCD addition legitimately makes "new playable characters" finally accurate and it's got new level design too (that's technically probably included regardless of the DLC).

    Speaking of which, it's going to be pretty weird to see Headcannon give Amy and Insta-Shield/Drop Dash equivalent alongside SCD's lack of the former and S1/SCD/S2's borked version of the latter.

    Wow, I can't believe there's only 10 days to go and Sega still haven't shown any footage of Amy in action, nor of the Game Gear games running (outside what was in the trailer). Hopefully we will get to see more of the title soon.

    Yeah once Superstars got announced, that hype train completely sped past Origins Plus which is a real shame (although questionable corporate tactics by SEGA also played a role :V)

    There’s always the Sonic livestream this Thursday to show off more Amy gameplay (they did tease it when they showed off Knuckles in CD last time)

    We definitely need an overview trailer or something

    I'm surprised Famitsu didn’t do a prelaunch livestream. They did one for Origins Minus, and they also unveiled Origins Plus in Japan.

    I didn’t know there's a Sonic livestream, so at least there's that.

    Still really hoping Headcannon have been allowed to go in and fix things like the broken Drop Dash in Sonic 1/CD/2 alongside the other work they've been doing. We know the timer bug in CD has finally been fixed, which is such a small thing that it strikes me as more likely something they'd catch than SEGA's internal team. If so, hopefully that's indicative that they've been allowed to make fixes outside of just implementing Amy and bugfixing Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

    Whilst the announcement of Superstars and SEGA's shenanigans over how to get the dlc has killed a lot of my buzz for Origins Plus, I'm still looking forward to playing with Amy. I assume Headcannon have added her drop-dash "hammer attack" move from Superstars as well as her double-jump insta-shield move? I hope they have for consistency.

    Also, I hope other characters will be able to access the new routes in CD and not just Knuckles.

    I hate the way this is framed. She beat the ""allegations"". Her not spindashing was a good thing. Like we needed another Sonic but this time with hammer. They solved this 20 years ago why are we celebrating more homogeneity?

    Pretty sure they solved it around 30 years ago during Sonic 3's development, when they realized "Sonic with small but useful differences" is the entirely correct way to craft a playable character. Shadow, Blaze, Rouge, Mighty, Ray, Tails and Knuckles all succeeded from this formula. It's kind of unreal to watch people get angry at Amy finally being capable and fun instead of a giant drag, different for the sake of different.

    I don't understand how flight or wall climbing are smaller differences than the hammer jump. Yeah Advance Amy couldn't roll but she still has speed and momentum. Tails can just fly right over that loop that's apparently so important for her to be able to roll through.

    Amy not being able to spin or spindash in Origins and Superstars would just make her a sucky character. There's nothing boring about giving her the same basic moveset as every other character in the game.

    There is something a little boring about not changing that moveset for her in any interesting or relevant way though, especially with multiple precedents.
