    Hi all,

I have a request for you guys.

Back in 1996/97ish, my brother's college roommate was a foreign exchange/study abroad student from Japan. A family member of the roommate worked in the music industry in Japan and knew the composer of Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2. The roommate had a cassette with a bunch of original recordings/outtakes/demos of Sonic music and he let my brother make a few copies of it. It was really cool to hear the original music. Unfortunately, when my family moved back in 2002, both of the tapes we had got lost.

I was wondering if any of you guys also had this music? I'm not sure how common it was, but I'd really love to hear the cassette again. I couldn't find anything on google, the composer's website, or on a few other forums. Any help would be appreciated.

Hmm, as far as I understand it nothing of the sort has gotten out. If you have ANY way of getting those tapes back or something like it, any help from YOU would be greatly appreciated :D

"Hey guys, could you help me out? About 15 years ago, an uncle of a friend of a friend, who just so happened to be a descendant of Joseph of Arimathea, lent us the Holy Grail. It was pretty cool, it had Jesus' blood in it and that was pretty cool. I lost it when we moved out, though. I was wondering if any of you guys found it? Respond A.S.A.P!"

    Feels really bad, man.

I am 99.99999999% sure that both copies we had got lost. In fact, I'm almost positive they got thrown away. It's not really a big deal. Out of nowhere yesterday I decided to bust out the Genesis and play some Sonic (first time in like 10 years) and for some reason remembered about the tape, thought I'd see if the same music was floating around online somewhere. Not really a big deal at all, but couldn't hurt to ask. Thanks!

So, what exactly do you mean? I can assure you that there's plenty of sonic music floating around on the net, but I'm not sure if that's what you want.

No, this tape contained a bunch of the original compositions and demos (I guess before they were programmed into the game.) I haven't been able to find them on youtube or online elsewhere.

My guess is because they didn't get out. If possible, you may want to contact that friend about it.

You might have gotten a tape with remixes or something like that. Can youtry to remember exactly which songs were on the tape?

I definitely remember Green Hill Zone from Sonic 1, Mystic Cave Zone from Sonic 2, and Metropolis Zone from Sonic 2 were on there. I'm not sure about the rest, but there were about 10-11 songs total on there. Oh yeah the Sonic 1+2 theme was on there too.

I don't recall them sounding like remixes, most of them sounded pretty similar to the in game music, except you could tell it was performed by a band (ie real instruments.) I also remember the tunes having pretty prominent bass lines, much more than in the game. Some of the tunes were different in the instruments used, but none of the melodies were changed. Each of the tunes would play continuously for a few minutes and then fade. That's about all I could remember.

Hey guys, I remember personally experiencing this AWESOME thing that I can't find hide nor hair of anywhere else in the world

and I remember finding a sonic 2 beta cartridge but not having any money at the time
and I remember actually seeing UFOs in marble zone but I don't know what happened to the cartridge
and I remember playing a Sonic X-Treme demo in a store one time

edit: oh wait, am I just being a jaded old member? What was the ratio of times when claims like this turned out to actually have any kind of substance vs how many times it was just some kid clamoring for attention or someshit?

Real or not, I'm surprised everyone wants to immediately make a mockery of what he says, risking the chance it could all actually be true and we get screwed because he decides to go elsewhere.

Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I'd say we encourage him to try to contact the friend or just find some way to get the tape back, if they did in fact exist. Maybe you should ask your brother what the roommates friend's name was, and then search facebook or the like.

Well, I would've completely dismissed this as fake after a few posts, were it not for this:

If he's lying, he's at least done his research. I imagine that these tapes definitely existed in the form given here, so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

Not where I want to be.
Sonic (?): Coming summer of 2055...?
I don't understand why anyone would assume this is fake. It'd be different if he's claiming to be the friend of a friend's uncle's father's sister's next-door neighbour, and we should believe him when he says that Sonic 1 was supposed to be on the Super Nintendo. Really, is a demo tape that outlandish? Especially after almost 20 years? Come on.

STS, does the band name "Dreams Come True" ring any bells?

I doubt anything is going to come of this if you're sure the tapes have been thrown. It's just another unrecoverable object to Sonic's past that we no longer have control over :(

If you honestly can find those tapes though; kudos to you, you've just earned your community member badge. I think we'd all love to hear them!

Dude, I'm not out to prove anything and could care less if you believe me or not. The reason I posted on this forum specifically is because there was a thread titled "Original Sonic Spinball Music" a few days ago and figured someone else might have had the original Sonic music. I didn't realize this tape was such a big deal to some people; if I had known that 10 years ago I would have taken better care of it. Artists release demos/original versions all the time; I really don't see what the big deal is.

To the others: next time I talk to my brother, I'll ask if he remembers his former roommates name, although he hasn't been in contact with him for quite some time now (at least 10 years or so.)
