Now I'm more confused, do you mean the fangame Super Mario Bros X or the webseries Super Mario Bros Z?

As for Metal Sonic, it's got on a glance a pretty close to resemblance to this still of the TX from Terminator 3 [IMG] .

This is hardly something invented in a 2003 movie though, and many tvtropes articles exist for subjects like this. In this case, Arm Cannon covers the many many examples of this. (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ArmCannon)

Terminator will never be out of the zeitgeist.

Megaman also comes to mind. Cyborg from Teen Titans? It could be anything. It's a useful robot ability.

  4. There’s also this of course

Incredibly Mega Manish, likely the first instance of him having an arm cannon in any official media, carried over when he was brought back as Shard too. Hesse would be aware of stuff like this and even that flash animation possibly if he’s the one who suggested this for the film version.

What's the bettings the entire "Metal Sonic army" idea in this universe is Robotnik watching The Terminator and wishing Skynet would win?

You think Star Wars had anything going on in 1992?

Classics transcend time and no one knows that better than us, frankly. Easter eggs happen all the time.

They released the Special Letterbox Edition in 1992, after releasing the Star Wars Trilogy boxset in 1990.

That wasn't their point. They meant that people in 1992 might have written Star Wars off as out of the zeitgeist due to lack of any current media. But obviously that's a false assumption, because a seminal work in a genre is going to be duplicated, imitated, and serialized over a long enough timeline as demonstrated by the continued relevance of Star Wars picking up with the theater releases of the special editions just a few years later followed by the continuation in feature films. The same could happen with Terminator.

Well, we kinda know how time travel concept would be used... now...?

I like how Metal Sonic looks kinda like rusty.

Seems like the plot of movie 4 is kind of obvious now.

I wonder if that was the intended Stinger before they went for a more ambiguous one with Jim Carrey mentioning retirement.

Better ambiguous to rewrite accordingly than to set a plan and have the rug pulled from under you.

I've seen another one floating around of Amy posing atop a defeated giant robot in a similar red-lit landscape, with Sonic lying prone and looking up at her in surprise, the characters posed very similar to the stinger we actually ended up with. So my guess is that the original plans for the film's ending would have somehow seen Sonic end up in this apparent 'bad future', setting up Movie 4 a little more directly than what we got.

Mind you, there's a lot of interesting concept art floating around - Tails and Knuckles riding on a scooter through London trying to escape a giant katamari-style ball of stuff, Super Sonic and Super Shadow fighting in space as the Eclipse Cannon actually succeeds in blasting the Earth(!), the Robotniks surrounded by soldiers inside the foyer of GUN HQ and shooting back at them... Definitely a lot of differences to the version of the film which actually got released.

I hear the leaked storyboard from ages ago also featured a version of the film's climax which involved time travel in some capacity, though I didn't check it out myself at the time. If that's true, perhaps that ties in with the concept art of the Eclipse Cannon actually blasting the Earth (presumably time travel would have fixed it somehow?), and presumably it could have somehow set up the 'bad future' for the stinger as seen in these more recently released concepts.

Oh god, a Sonic CD/SA2 movie mashup would have been MESSY. I’m glad they didn’t go in this direction.

The time travel element will be a great plot point and maybe get a little Sonic 4 Episode 3 conclusion since….
