I'm looking forward to the next movie, and I think having an army of Metal Sonic's is a great way to raise the stakes after Shadow... but I really think Movie 3 is going to be the box-office highpoint for this series.

I like Amy a lot, I like Metal, but Shadow is just soooo popular. Movie 4 is gonna take a hit from not being "the movie to introduce Shadow", and it'll take another hit if Jim Carrey doesn't return.

Obviously, this is far-off projecting from someone who is not in the movie/marketing business, but I have trouble seeing this play out any other way.

Hopefully I'm wrong! Stranger things have happened, and the Sonic IP's value has skyrocketed over the past 5 years... if they keep making good games, maybe the expanding fan base will make up the difference.

Either way, I'll be there opening night if I'm able.

One thing I'm curious about with Sonic 4 is the stakes. The trilogy so far has been increasing what's at risk, first was Sonic's life and by extent Tom, 2nd we were told the world was at stake, but it wasn't really shown that well, and it felt more like Green Hills was the only thing that was in real danger, and then 3 properly showed us the planet at risk.
Logically, we go with the solar system, or galaxy, right? I feel like the universe is probably a bit much for 4 though, save that for 5 or 6 lol.

Yeah... I think stuff from '06 and Unleashed (maybe?) should be saved for 5 or 6.

Maybe in Sonic 132 we wll get a Sonic Frontiers adaptation. :V

Mecha Sonic could always be a Metal Sonic “upgrade” form.

There are a bunch of Metal Sonic versions, so looking at the apparent cloning aspect of this version, I actually think they could sneak in all of them if they really wanted to.

I suspect that there may be Silver.

If the plot adapts Sonic CD and there is time travel involved, Silver could be the "living time machine" whose main purpose is to bring the characters into different timelines.

The post credits had Amy, but Tails was in the post credits of the first movie too, still the second movie was mostly about Knuckles instead. I doubt Metal Sonic will be the main focus of the new movie, he's just a machine made by Eggman, and there are multiple of them... he's probably the new, upgraded version of the egg-drones.

I'm still not sure what they will do with Amy, she appears as a strong character, doubt she will be kidnapped (or maybe she will at some point, but I don't think it will be the major focus of the plot). From that post-credits seems like Amy is depicted as this mysterious character who's used to fight Metal Sonics since a long time... I'm of the impression that she is from the future, a future where Sonic is not there anymore and she has to fight Metal Sonics by herself.

In my opinion it could be a sort of Sonic Prime situation where Sonic will travel through different timelines and meet a different character in each one of them (Amy, Silver, possibly younger Shadow too). I think they will play the trick of bad future/good future, Amy comes from a bad future and at the end of the movie she stays in the present because the bad future she comes from is no more.

Not sure about what would trigger this universe-scale crisis which would force characters from the future to go back in time and save the day in order to change the history, especially on planet Earth... I speculated it has to be about the Master Emerald (which is currently on Earth) and the collapsing moon (offcourse a big part of the moon is cut away in the movies too, and it might fall on Earth causing a disaster).

I hope they do, but knowing them they won't and we'll just get more Metal Sonic clones like we seen in the post credits scene. :\ Metal is just so damn overrated IMO. Mecha was the original Sonic clone after all too. I get why Mecha hasn't returned to the games since he technically is destroyed in Sonic 3 and Knuckles but at least he did come back in the IDW comics for a bit.

Metal Sonic is the coolest and if you can’t see that then I’m afraid no one can help you. Namaste.

S3K is a different Mecha than S2's, and Metal Sonic debuted before S3K.

  13. I can see them using MK2 as inspiration for a more threatening upgrade near the final act, the way he looks now which is incredibly close to the game design seems like it could be a red herring. While robots having arm cannons is a very common thing it wouldn’t surprise me if Metal’s is referencing this:

SMBX. It's not exactly the first time Dragon Ball fan media has appeared in official materials, just look at DBKai and the IDW comics themselves. Plus, Mecha in SMBX has significantly cultural web prominence for us 2000s Flash-adoring kids.

Then I super doubt that’s the inspiration. If it’s a time travel plot, it’s easier to believe there are Terminator references.

There's no way. Terminator hasn't been relevant in the public zeitgeist since the 2000s.

It hasn't been less relevant than old flash animations from that same decade for any part of its lifespan. If you think that pop culture is above referencing one of the most famous sci-fi movies ever made just because it's a little old at this point, you're nuts.

Not to mention, these movies love referencing shit that is not relevant by any stretch anyway. They had Eggman mention Limp Bizkit in the last movie and hate watching 2011's Green Lantern in this one. Even if Terminator was somehow not relevant still or iconic ever, that is by no means exclusionary.

I never saw that fan animation and yet I immediately pulled-out sci-fi references.

Bladerunner would be another thing to make callbacks too, and maybe even moreso since the sequel came-out less than a decade ago.
