Since the first movie there has been some issues with the compositing and anti-aliasing in the series.

This one did have less, but if I'm remembering the scene you're talking about I think it looked that way because of the combination of Shadow plus the foreground/background. So it made it seems a little odd.

    It's a secret!
BTW, a random thought came to me:

Isn't it awesome how perfect Metal Sonic's design is you don't have to change anything about him?

From the classic games, to modern, to Boom, to the movie, his design is the exact same always... No change needed because he's peak from moment one

I hope Amy Rose still has an attraction to Sonic. Not like in the games. I mean complimenting him or moments when she’s extra nice to him. Where it’s obvious she likes him but doesn’t come out and say it. The others can tease him about it like Knuckles did to Tails but Sonic would keep getting annoyed. That’d be cute.

Oh yeah well then why did they give him an arm cannon

(I'm slightly disappointed, I always thought it'd be cool to see how movie Robotnik would design him and maybe somehow implement the World of Sonic's version of Chaos Drives that use the characters' quills, but I'm sure they can / will change it up like they did the other characters.)

It's not exactly the same though. They tweaked it in a number of ways. First thing that comes to mind is they changed his finger blades to actual fingers with joints and stuff.
Also Modern and Boom Metal Sonic are noticeably different designs, Boom especially

They're almost identical, Boom's just has the proportional differences to match with Sonic.

I was attempting to find time to write a big thing about the new movie but that kind of time has been elusive to me lately (I should invest in Time Stones in the near future to maximise my writing potential...ok that was a lame joke I admit it). In any case, it is just easier to pop in here on occasion to offer a few thoughts.

The parallels between Sonic and Eggman in this movie while both being faced with doppelgängers isn't lost on me and I think that is clever. I actually am not a fan of one actor playing multiple roles in film but Jim Carrey actually does and admirable job here.

My biggest complaint in the whole thing is that corny shot of Sonic and Shadow near the end. You know the one. I know it is inspired by game art but it looks really weird to me in film. It looks like something out of a fast food toy commercial the way it is shot so I sort of don't like that shot. At all.

Rachel's 'Getting Ultra Nasty' line is probably the funniest line in the whole film. I can't believe it but I actually like some of the human characters.

    I love the dog.

Where was JoJo? She needs to be in more Sonic movies.

Alyla Browne as Maria steals this whole movie. A breakout role for sure. It totally underscores the movie as a whole and elevates it to something even better. I just wish we had just a bit more of her story.

I notice these movies seem to 'borrow' a lot of film tropes and scenes from other movies. How many movies have we had someone taking something explosive (like a nuclear weapon in some films) far away to save everyone while sacrificing themselves? Or the Superman-esque stuff with Sonic and Shadow shielding Earth from the big laser? I have seen something just like that somewhere previously.

Then, I began really noticing all the movie parodying in each of these film installments. Hell, even the road trip stuff in the first movie could be called a nod to or parody of Hop. Maybe it was intentional (I've never seen Hop by the way and don't intend to).

Even before getting spoiled, I had a feeling the mid-credits scene would be Amy. It is even better with Metal. I love Amy here but it wasn't what I was hoping for as I really wanted a Classic Amy type of design (at least to introduce her) but I dig what was done. I think she looks quite good. Metal looks great.

The shot of SUPER Sonic approaching the Death Egg-looking space station and Eggman looking at the quill turn gold is superb. That scene alone is elegant. It might be the single greatest scene in the whole film universe so far.

Fuck. I actually can't believe I like the human characters.

I do think Sonic and company look a little too fluffy a lot of the time but the designs are at least good.

There's still hope that there could be a "Metal Sonic Prime" that has an original design closer to Movie Sonic (or something different) that also uses the quills as a power source.

Huh, I could swear the pelvis thing was introduced in boom. Turns out it was a Modern Metal Sonic design change.
Anyway my point still stands, just look at his design from Sonic CD cover and say it's the same design as Modern Metal Sonic

Metal Sonic didn't recieve a Modern design until the Rivals 2 in 2007. His brief appearance at the end of Heroes, cameos in the Adventure games and new art for the Gems Collection boxart all depicted him with his Classic design, albeit with lengthened limbs to match Sonic's proportions. Rivals 2 debuted his modern design with a significantly reshaped head, pelvis piece and extra detailing on his fingers and shoes etc (note that it's only used in artwork renders though, as his in-game model is the same as Rivals 1 and based on his SA2 and SADX models).

The fact that they didn't give him an Adventure/Modern redesign makes his Classic design in Generations feel particularly forced.

But yeah, anyway, his design in the movies hopefully won't get changed further from the games. Being a robot means his look is a lot more versatile than anyone else's.

Okay, I went back for a second look, and actually I noticed that Colors Ultimate was a bad point of comparison to Boom. He's actually insanely spindly in that game for some reason, so Rise of Lyric's proportional changes are a lot more noticeable when compared to his usual look. Forces model for comparison:

we have american air bases in Japan. I spent a few of my formative years in Kadena AFB, which is on the island of Okinawa.

they're based off of games that were already borrowing things from other properties. The Death Egg in Sonic 2 and 3 is literally just the Death Star with Eggman's face on it.

Sonic Rivals 2, actually. Sonic Heroes to Sonic Rivals had a more classic body frame, where the legs go straight into the torso.

I'm just now realizing they never followed up on Stone going undercover as a GUN agent in the post credits scene of 2, lol
