https://hiddenpalace.org/w/images/4/4f/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_2_(Sep_14,_1992_prototype)_(RAW).zip From now on, EPROM dumps should be on the article for the proto around where the download link is under (raw dump).
The prototype we should be after now will be the one with the beta Casino Night having an update with animated tiles. Maybe that is tonight...unless it's not. drx could always give us an 8-bit S2 instead!
Yea very weird how the final debug replaced the useful S ? Monitor with the completely broken player switch monitor. Maybe that was the last monitor they implemented and they didn't bother updating it?
For whatever it's worth, railways and cargo crates are thing's one could expect to see in a desert setting.
I'd be happy to see another sonic 2 MD build tonight even if it's not too different, feels like between everyone we have so many s2 protos that it feels like the collection is nearly complete lol i'd love to see a sonic 1 SMS beta of sorts, any kind of changes to that game would be really interesting and I love it. Oh and the S monitor, does this current proto just give you fast shoes, invincibility and the graphics for super sonic or does it actually do a seven emeralds in memory sort of thing?
This could be a double-edged sword, because it would likely mean there aren't any other Sonic 2 prototypes out there. Or at least, ones shared with the press. Not sure there'll be much on the Sonic CD side of things either. But I reckon there's at least 3 Sonic 1 prototypes and 1 Sonic 3 prototype to dig up. Unless someone comes across a big CD-R filled with internal builds again.
It's the question mark monitor from 2P mode, and it turns Sonic into Super Sonic (without the ring countdown). In fact I'm not sure there's a way to turn Super Sonic back into regular Sonic.
Next prototype is a MD Sonic 2 prototype, earlier than this one. Unless they are just waiting to pull a prank, which is very much like drx and Sazpaimon to do.
Seeing the bubble title card clean was such a surreal experience. Looking forward to seeing what tonight brings!
There's also another build of Sonic Crackers that may exist, due to updated sprites that were found. I was hoping for that along with the Sonic 3 with Sonic 2 sprites proto but I'm satisfied that we got this Sonic 2 proto, it was certainly in my wish list for Sonic Month, we may have had may Sonic 2 releases by now but again, there were always gaps still to fill. Now we just need that updated beta CNZ proto and the set may as well be completed. In any case there's only one more release planned after tonight. We'll have to wait for another time for the rest, if they still exist. If it means another decade of waiting, so be it.
Looks like this build would have to be fairly soon after the Wai proto, seeing how quickly (it seems) the graphics were replaced with what we know was used from at least yesterday's proto all the way to the final release. If this proto still exists (gonna be careful to avoid speculating about whether tonight's release would be either this build, or close to it, to avoid hopes/hype building), I'd imagine Wood and Hidden Palace would still be in it … wonder if they fixed the loop in CNZ by the build in said screenshot, seeing how they still hadn't added a spring to the ramp (though the background was definitely worked on since the Wai proto by that build).
If you look at our wonderful development page and ignore all the old screenshots that are clearly from this prototype, you'll be left with what the "last" prototype will look like. i.e. final Sonic sprites, all of the Simon Wai levels. There'll be plenty of internal builds but as far as "public" ones go (as in, ones sent to the press), I'm only seeing one left.
So, I know I posted it earlier in the thread, but for those who don't dig through pages of old thread, it might be interesting/worth reiterating: 2P split screen mode activation (in valid levels) using the level select: It seems you must highlight "2P Versus" on the title screen before hitting A + Start to enter the level select in order for holding B on a zone/act choice to load a stage w/ split-screen. A difference from just having to hold down B in the Wai proto (makes sense, no 1P/2P Versus choice on the title screen in that build). It works on Sky Fortress, Chemical Plant Act 1, Sky Chase, and Death Egg too (as well as EHZ/GHZ, Oil Ocean, Mystic Cave, Casino Night). Don't select the special stage though, as they didn't add code to either prevent selecting the stage outright w/ splitscreen enabled, or make it so selecting the special stage would boot you back to the title screen or something. As a result, selecting the special stage with 2P splitscreen enabled will crash your game. Sky Fortress: Death Egg: (NOTE that the position of the camera on the lower half goes past where the camera would stop in 1P mode - revealing that the tunnel taking Sonic out of Death Egg is there, but without any explosion sequence.
