It's a shot in the dark, but I'm kind of sure it's for Misty Maze, at least the above water part of it.

Wow, thats some beutiful art there, gives me the feel of sonic advance. Is the grass of the first level off sonic advance?=P. I will agree with previous posts, there is no need to prove to anyone, we all know you have the art skills, and since this is a wip I can't wait to see the final product!. Great work.

Looking awesome, but I agree about the dithering looking a bit odd. Does it disappear after applying the NTSC filter?

Else, it might be better to use vertical lines instead, as in the old Sonics.

Wow, that art is amazing. I for one am not all that bothered by the dithering. I'm probably in the minority, but I think it actually adds a little to the art.

EPIC. This art looks very professional, hats off to ya man, seriously.

And while we're at levels, I had a suggestion concerning Starry night Zone.

I remembered Neo Gigapolis from Sonic 2 Advanced Edit by Rika Chou and thought it would be a nice tribute to the marvelous work Rika Chou made if the NeoGigapolis art was implemented in Sonic Megamix, as Tweaker wanted to do his best to not let the effort put into this hack be in vain, I think it would be a nice opportunity to make a tribute to Rika Chou efforts.

Since Tweaker has the source to S2AE, I always thought that those levels should be used in Megamix, yes. They are awesome.

Tweaker also has the source to my hack, he should use my songs too *shot*

And so should be the music. They were an nice choice and they fit to the level, though.

To clarify, I never actually said you were lazy, and had already acknowledged that you had too much on your plate to really attempt anything big. It's my fault for wording things poorly and barking up that tree to begin with when I was only really out to heckle Tweaker. :ohdear:

That said, this is much better! I'm certainly impressed.

    Ring-a-ding ding. That is great.

I say it is like classic Sonic level art. The best way I can describe classic level art is that it is geometrical, yet arranged in particular patterns and variations that create interest, maintaining a sense of order yet coming to life. The dithering is a unique pattern to put on these rock tiles as they overlap and change in width. StephenUK really has something here.

For God's sake, Team Megamix, do me one favor: DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT MISTY MAZE. The art, the music, THE BACKGROUND FROM SONIC CD BFLBFBLFBLBLPLBLFPPPGHHGH that level is a magnificent work of art. It's perfect. I can't think of a single thing to change that WOULDN'T detract from it. I don't want to have to cry again like when I found out the music for Metallic Base Act 3 was changed post-v2.0...I wouldn't leave my room for weeks... =P

Fixing that Act 4 bug is fine with me though :3

What I would give to see some loops in this style. And yet, the background is totally what completes it.

Exactly. But I can think of at least one thing that really distances this image of something that would appear in a Sonic game: the grass. Compare with some images:

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

There is something obvious here - the grass is very thin (in the custom zone), which is quite different from how it normally appears in other games. This doesn't mean, however, that it's something bad; just different.

Well, it's always nice to have something different.
Thick grass would ruin that, IMO.

Well put. I couldn't have said it better myself. It is kind of like he is going for the volcanic, rocky, infertile feel, like it's some kind of mountain stage. Which is RIDICULOUSLY exciting.

By the way, a question for the Megamix team--any chance of getting a "Sonic and Tails Classic Mode" like in Sonic 2? That would be a neat bonus for beating the game, and sneak in a little more replay value :3

Oh yeah? The layout I did for acts 2 and 3 dates back to 2006, and is part of the first batch of shit I did for the project. Well, act 2 was extended sometime in about... 2007 I think, and act 1 was made into it's current state around that time as well. But, semantics aside, I HATE the layout. It's obtuse, winding, lengthly, and overall very boring to play.... At least, it was, until I got off my ass and started doing stupid shit like this:

    [IMG][IMG]
    [IMG][IMG]

Part of me would rather blindside players with this shit, but I know the final product will not be released for a while still, and I really feel the need to apologize for some of the crappier layouts, particularly SBZ3 (which also now includes the above elements, but I was too lazy to show any of them there). I feel that the level is far more fun to play now, with plenty of alternate routes and no random stopping to negotiate hoards of enemies while running low on air and lagging the game to a couple frames per second.

Also, I have no clue why the underwater pallette appears in those screenshots. The only one where there was actually any water is the one with Shadow on the curve. I'm guessing this is a bug in Fusion when taking shots?

    Various Artwork & Music, :smug:
Now this is exciting. Misty Maze finally gets the Dark Fortress treatment. I always used to love it when it was the only stage with that much custom art, but then I realized I hated it because it was the slowest stage in the game, and there was that one point in Act 1 where I would almost always run out of air.

The level design was always good, but it was the only really slow stage left in the game which made it boring to play. I'm glad we'll be seeing more of this and less of Labyrinth Zone in the final build.
