    wOOt megamix update! :D

I don't agree with some posters as the brighter orange sky doesn't do it for me.
Preferring Stephen's original dark blue sky but the clouds should change; looking more like smog or fog.

How come you never usually draw new art for this, Stephen? I know you can. :P

Just not as amazing for me when I recognize it right away.

It's simply a matter of finding the time to be honest. It was always my intention to go back and revise things at a later date in all zones once I get more time and have the basic zone themes outlined using existing art. At the moment I'm trying to work 50 hour weeks, while setting up things in a new house I got recently and maintaining a social life at the same time. I hope I can eventually get around to drawing new stuff, but at the moment it just wouldn't happen and would be left sat as an unfinished piece of shit, like the majority of my own hack was for years.

If I can add my own opinion, I actually kind of like the mishmashed nature of Stephen's levels; it ensures that the art quality is invariably top-notch, professional work and still aims to capture the ideal feel of the level in question. Complain all you want, but it looks good. That's all I care about. :)

Plus, the hack is called Sonic Megamix... so you'd imagine that some mixing and matching would be in order. =P

I can't figure out what's going on with the lighter colors above the city scape. I was thinking it was smoke at first, but it appears too spiky/not rounded enough for that. I then though lights above the city at night, but the palette of the sky is nowhere near that dark a shade of blue. Any chance of cluing me in?

I can't say it doesn't look nice, that's for sure, but I can say it doesn't quite look finished yet. Slightly off topic, I just figured out mega mix wasn't canceled, though I'm not extremely surprised at I'm not sure why. As for critique, the foreground somehow seem to fit in very well with everything else, I'd suggest making it somewhat darker. Well, I'm going to have to pay more attention now I guess, because there's probably quite a few more things I missed.

Whatever that is, it might look better with a "heat effect" applied to it. Just a suggestion.

Looks quite cool to me, anyway.

I thought the last version of this background had the heat effect, but it caused the game to lag?

Okay, stop that. Are you actually trying to tell us that a talentless cut-and-paste hack job is preferable to original art? It isn't desirable when Sega goes around recycling stuff, why would it be any more acceptable here? You must have better taste than this, because that sounds like an enormous cop-out to me.

That said, I can't say this is terribly exciting, but it at least looks cool. I wouldn't mind playing this.

At what point did I say I prefer it to original art? You're the one who wrongfully made that assumption.

Considering that this is a fan project and an original level artist who has a level of skill at least on par to that of the artists who worked on the original Genesis games is not a talent available for us to use, Stephen's "mish-mash" style, as you put it, suffices just fine and still manages to make the levels look fresh and appealing, acting as a very reasonable complement to the level designs present in previous releases.

As I'm sure anybody with a lick of sense will be able to notice, Megamix is not an official SEGA product. As such, it is under no such strict quality standards that require for it to have 100% original art to be criticized fairly or even considered aesthetically pleasing by the general populous; it's not held up to anywhere near as stringent a standard of quality as an official game would be. And quite frankly, I'm more than content with that. I've never claimed Megamix to be in any way superior to an official SEGA product; all we've done is coordinate and work on game that we enjoy. That's all that ever mattered to me, and that's all that ever will matter to me.

So... if you're done putting words in my mouth, I suggest either drawing us some original art or accepting the inevitability that this is the best we've got. And it's not bad at all, either. :)

if I recall correctly, most of the levels within megamix uses art from all sorts of places, but I don't think anyone had a problem with this before, so why is it a problem now?

I'm the one who put it that way?

That talent isn't available to you? Rika's already stated that Stephen has the ability to create new art, and I'm just running with that. And I suppose this wasn't the case, but it looked to me that you were trying to cover up for his lack of effort, as if the sort of art you're getting now is the ideal. Not that I'm insinuating that he's obligated to work to the best of his ability for the project in lieu of his explanation, because he isn't, and art like this at least covers the bare minimum.

"Fresh and appealing", though? I can't agree with that at all, and that's my problem here. To meet that criteria, it should be a challenge to recognize the sources of the individual art assets used, and here, it looks as if he's lifted whole chunks from only two zones with some palettes tweaked. It'd help if you guys at least sampled bits from multiple sources, and realized that you aren't necessarily constricted to Sonic games when it comes to ripping art. :) :)

This has always been a problem with me.

At the end of the day Stephen will do what Stephen wants to do. No point moaning all the time saying, ' give me new art now!'. Now I don't know if you can do any good art, but I would like you to present something that 'you' did and that 'you' think is acceptable to 'your' standards. Then come back to us.

Now, see, you're making me out to be some sort of selfish prick who thinks it's a person's job to cater to my specific interests, when I've already explicitly stated that Stephen isn't obligated to please us, so you might want to try reading as much before playing the white knight next time.

Also, do note that the "Well, let's see you do better!" argument is a thoroughly retarded one, and Tweaker will back me up on that. But I can't resist saying that yes, I can do art, and yes, I've done similar mash-ups in the past and can attest to how simple the process actually is (To design a level, actual implementation notwithstanding), but I have decency enough to not use someone else's topic to toot my own horn. Thanks for playing, man!

No, I think this anoying you more because of what I said, I'm not trying to make you like a bad person I am just pointing out what you have already done yourself. I'm not 'tooting my own horn' either, but the way you have explained yourself I have only said what I have read. That said, I will apologise if you have taken my post in a bad way I am only trying to get my point across. In time stephen may produce something new. But as you said 'This has always been the problem' suggest that you are obviously anoyed about this. But in time stephen may produce something better. But for now this is good, and you shouldn't worry about the mish-mash for now.

Well, I kinda see Ritz's point. I mean, as long as this thing as been in development, I guess at this juncture people are starting to expect more than just mashups.
