Let's start with the things I found inside: The main games are still in .dat files Music is the same, though I found a jingle that I don't believe is in the final (I'll need to check this) There was a file containing login info to a SEGA site (now down unfortunately) There's an uncompressed Sonic 3 (J) ROM in the main directory The ISO is riddled with US/Japan test ROMs. I didn't look inside them, but they appear to be header only ROMs that were most likely used to test the emulators There was no sign of any Sonic CD ISO/.dat file Now onto the in-game images: When selecting to play Sonic CD, you're redirected to Sonic 1. The movies cannot be played. (I'm saying this because it didn't work with my GC emulator. If it happens to work on console, please correct me.) The Comics are all there, and the Manuals are there too. There's not much else to find in this thing I guess... EDIT: HOLY MOLEY! HOW DID I NOT SEE THIS!!! Look at the last image with the movies. They were going to put Sonic the Movie on there. I passed it off as 'Oh, they screwed up and forgot to put CD after it,' but it appears I was wrong. This is a bigger find than I though I would get :P
Are you sure it was the full movie, and not just the two Japanese preview clips for both parts of the OVA or something? =P
Well, we'll never know, but there's strong evidence that supports me theory. A) It says nothing of clips. If it were a clip, it would probably say SONIC OVA CLIP 1/2. B) The original OVA in japan was a 2 part anime, This was most likely going to be separated like the original Japanese version. a) In the little scroll bar at the bottom, it goes on to say that the movie was "created in Japan." This could hint at the Japanese version with English subtitles, but even then, it could just me the English version split into 2. Side Note) It probably would be the English version anyway due to Metal's "naughty finger" and other things of that sort. (Apparently Tails' boob groping is A-OK material for American children though since they left it in the American DVD. )
"Tails get off!" "I'm so sorry!" "I'd never thought you'd stoop that low" :P Why can't that kinda stuff happen in the games?
Wow, CVN. http://web.archive.org/web/*/vr1.co.jp That's a link to the Internet Archive's "Way Back Machine" linking to archived pages of vr1.co.jp Not sure if it will turn up anything interesting but I'm looking into it as much as I can right now. I can tell that the page is defiantly host to game information of some sort. I can see words like "Fighter Ace 3.5" and "Microsoft Sidewinder" scattered in the text.
Erm, one of the wayback links leads to this site... So the Mega Collection proto has a link to an old Jaleco site. Okay. Choro Q is a well known Jaleco game (Also known as Penny Racers, etc.). What in the world...
That should explain the "Montage" folder. It has a list of models (face parts, arms, legs, etc). The only real folder on this disk that's actually for SMC is "sonic", and that 's where you'll find your roms, movies, sound files, etc. Extracted, the game only amounts to 400mb or so, so there are no movies in here (except for these SFD test movies, but those were always in SMC). In that list of files/folders, I think all of those files are actually in this ISO. Beats me why they're in here. :\ The only thing that isn't on that list I posted is sonic3.bin, aka the uncompressed Sonic 3 rom.
Looks like we would have got the JP Version of Sonic CD had it been in the SMC....maybe. Or the regional thing with the music was why it was delayed in the first place.
There's a batch file in the sonic/test002 directory, called mk.bat. Code (Text): @echo off @copy /B /Y /Z %EXJ2_NETWORK_DRIVE%\eSTD.es es2es -I %1 -o ____tmp.es -noa esconvGC ____tmp.es %2 %3 @del ____tmp.es @del eSTD.es I'm ripping the Sonic CD manual from this game, and will post it if anyone is interested.
I found these images in the .tpl files in the main directory. They seem to be from a GCN/PS2 game of some kinda. Definitely not Sonic related in anyway. Here's just a taste of what I found... EDIT: Wow... seconds later, I find this too. Remember this image? I found it in the current ISO. It was found in the final game too I believe. What I don't believe is that these extra images were found with it. Check them out with the link below: http://www.sendspace.com/file/usbb32 This really isn't that big actually. It just shows what made up the image itself...
I *think* the odd images are from this: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/image/919156.html The title block does match that one tile with the title on it.
Huh...those images are really interesting. I seriously wounder where they derived some of their resources from to make this collection. First a reference to an old Jaleco site and now images that have nothing to do with the collection at all?
Really makes little sense... a Sonic game collection, random Jaleco stuff, and tilesets from a Hasbro/Takara PS2 adaptation of "Life". Talk about disjointed.
Takara also developed a Choro Q game for GC, which might explain the mention of it earlier. I don't suppose we know if Sega outsourced Mega Collection development at all?
Well those in IRC know this, but if you look in one of the files, you can find GC and PS2 button images. SO I'm guessing it's this game here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/gamecube/data/917223.html If that's a PS2 port, that would make sense...
Seems like the only logical reason. It does say "Compiled under the Supervision of Sonic Team" instead of "Compiled by Sonic Team".
When they make prototypes on genesis carts (or WHEN they did) they would write over old prototypes of other games right? Is it possible that's what happened here with the weird images?
