    I DONE MAKED GAMES.
Give it to Amy. Have her Piko Hammer in mid-air function the same way, except for the rolljump shit because I'm pretty sure they'll fix that.

And yes, I'm very sure Amy's in. Her multiple appearances on official material are foreshadowing it in the same way all the classic-styled Sonic arts did. Or do we need... MORE CLUES?

Brilliant idea. I wonder if that is exactly what is happening already, as it makes perfect sense if Amy is included. May I ask what new classic-styled Amy art you are referring to, anyone?

Sonic (?): Coming summer of 2055...?
This statement contradicts itself. If it works at a high level of play, then it's good. If you're not good enough to make use of it, git gud.

I mean, why can't we have both? I'm really really going to miss the insta-shield, and the drop-dash makes the game feel even more like Sonic CD to me.

You know, Mario games manage to have jumping on enemies work just fine in 3D. How often are you jumping on/into enemies at high speed in the 2D games anyway? The homing attack is a crutch and always has been.

In fact, I'd wager the insta-shield would be even better for 3D. Jumping on one enemy is easy, and if you need to hit a few enemies, let the insta-shield give you an extra boost of height and/or hang-time when you hit an enemy with it that you can use to line up your next bop. Sounds good to me.

I mean, I'm not saying it's a bad mechanic. But using the "its needed for 3D to help line up attacks" is a silly argument. It's not needed in 3D any more than it is in 2D.

I mean, the official explanation from Sega is just that, isn't it? I think I side with you though. I don't think it really is needed in 3D.

Also, I admit I never was any good at using the insta-shield. I don't think I ever really understood what to do with it as a kid.

Yes it's the official explanation. But since it's a stupid ass explanation I've elected to ignore it.

Ehh, I like the homing attack in 3D, although it was better before they added the target reticule. Before then, it felt more like you had to make a judgement (even if a slight one)on distance and angles, instead of "you go here, then here then here then here".

I think the Homing Attack is great as a shield power, as it was in 3D Blast. Wouldn't mind something like that in Mania.

Artwork and looking for post-grad work...
I'll add to this bit by noting that it's entirely possible to play all of Sonic's levels in Adventure 1 without having to use the HA once to destroy enemies. There are some forced HA chains over bottomless pits in some levels, but they can be bypassed with a strategically-used spindash. Dare I say that it's actually harder to play Sonic 4 without using the HA in comparison.

Going back to the insta-shield*, I also do wish it wasn't replaced wholesale by the Drop Dash. I like the new mechanic just fine, but I do with the two could had been preserved. I don't really use it much for breaking rolling jumps as Deef as described, but I find its split-second invincibility and its small increased attack range very useful.

*I'm actually starting to like the original W Spin Attack name more than the "insta-shield" fan nickname, but the latter name has been ingrained into my cranium for so long, by this point I can't refer to the move as any other name otherwise.

Not quite. They added in punching and kicking. I recall it being mentioned this was because of it being harder to jump on enemies. They replaced this with the water pistol in Sunshine, and with spinning in Galaxy, and returned to plain jumping in Mario 3D World.

Ok? You're partially refuting specific details without refuting my overall point, which is that the homing attack isn't necessary. In all of your examples, none of them are as automatic as the homing attack.

And I hardly ever used punching, kicking, or spinning in any Mario game. It was a lot easier for me to just jump or slide into things. I used the water gun in Sunshine, but then lots of enemies required it so that's not really the same thing.

And before you go though, I played Mario 3D World with the 3D off cause it was annoying. Did just fine jumping on stuff.

It'd be cool if they could implement the insta-shield as an optional ability. I think with this being a successor to Sonic 3K the insta-shield should be in there.

Would we be open to maybe bonus abilities as Super Sonic as well or is he OP as he is? I kind of like the fact super sonic is OP because it's a nice reward. I can't imagine we will be seeing hyper forms in this game but I wouldn't mind the Hyper abilities from S3K as a Super character in Mania.

I'm honestly really surprised this many people actually care about the insta-shield. It's either useless or totally overpowered, depending on how you use it, and it's boring either way.

As long as the special stages remain challenging but not to nightmare levels like blue spheres, he should stay that way.

Really? I always thought the blue sphere stages were by far the easiest special stages of the first 3 Sonic games.

Very surprised about all this love for the insta-shield as well. As much as people are talking up the insta-shield, I can't help but interpret this as a temporary fixation from a vocal minority. I mean, objectively speaking, I've been this huge Sonic fan forever, been posting on these forums and lurking for a decade prior, absorbed nearly everything I could... And yet I didn't even know about the full use of the insta-shield until about 3 days ago. Even the Carnival Night barrel gets 100x more discussion than it. Yet suddenly the insta-shield-shield is a critical element???

Anyway, regarding Super Sonic, I for one would love it if you could actually get something out of Super Sonic. Listening to the same song repeatedly and being invincible is only really fun for like 10 minutes. Would be cool if each zone had like one secret that you could only uncover as Super Sonic, like even just a room you can reach and in it you get a special one use Sprite animation that adds a little bit of extra story. Like Knuckles digging for something, or Tails repairing the tornado, or flickies being robotisized. Probably a lot of work for something only a small sect of people would ever see. Then again, if Sega pulls all the stops they could reignite a very lucrative branch of the series, and a small animation isn't that much work...

Well, it's probably the type of thing where everyone assumes everyone else plays the game the same way. I'm as astonished as you to learn there are people that never figured out how to use the insta-shield correctly.

I don't think anyone's mentioned it yet, but I think the drop dash makes the loop boost redundant now in high level play?
