Interesting, I am super happy that they acknowledged the Super Emeralds as canon.

Has there been any mention regarding whether this game fits in to the timeline? It seems pretty obvious to me that Generations Classic Sonic became Sonic 4's and the timeline ran from there, but that Mania's is likely the result of Sonic Forces creating yet another timeline by going back in time again, then this Sonic being dragged forward in time to Forces.

There's been a lot of talk of Classic Sonic being from another dimension, whilst clearly also being the past Sonic. Again, this is pretty obvious that altered timelines ARE other dimensions. The same happened with Blaze and Silver between Sonic Rush, Sonic 2006 and Sonic Rivals.

SEGA are clearly interested in this stuff still so I'm intrigued to see how they'll fit it together.

I could never really tell if the pacman emote was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek or sarcasm. Disregard.

It's not worth thinking too much on what is cannon but if you can't settle with that then the easiest way to think is that each game has it's own unique variations of past and present. It's not as if this can't be backed up because Sonic CD's time mechanic has this theme throughout the entire game so it isn't entirely isolated to the modern games.

If you can accept string theory as a theory of everything you should have no problem accepting the convoluted nature of the mobius multiverse.

It seem a like they're going for the Zelda treatment - every time someone goes back in time it splits off to another game. Actually looking forward to Forces to see how that plays out.

I'm going to take this moment to make everyone on this forum hate me and say that if Mania 2 still has to have some remixed zones, I want Wacky Workbench back.

I mean, CPZ2 is basically just Wacky Workbench with level design that isn't garbage. Surely they can make even the worst zone in Classic Sonic history fun :v:

I really wish taxman could write more stuff like this regarding other things in the game though. The tidbits we've been given so far are quite valuable and I feel there's more answers to come!

    BAN HIM IMMEDIATELY.

But nah, seriously. Crisis City was one of my favorite stages in Generations. A stage being a PIECE OF WORTHLESS GARBAGE in one game doesn't mean it can't be fun in another game.

If there were a Mania 2, and if (heaven forbid) they were forced AGAIN to include a bunch of remixed stages, here's what I'd like to see:

SONIC 1: Spring Yard, Star Light
SONIC 2: Casino Night (yeah, I know it was in Generations 3DS, but I love it too much), Mystic Cave
SONIC CD: Tidal Tempest, Quartz Quadrant
SONIC 3: Ice Cap, how many times does it take!?
S&K: Without pulling from either Generations or Mania, I guess the only ones left are Sandopolis and Death Egg!

Yeah but he wasn't a replying to someone about the Super Emeralds, so Jen didn't have to mention them. The Super Emeralds are just the Chaos Emeralds powered up, so when the actual Emeralds disappeared again, they left the forms of the Super Emeralds behind, which turned to stone.

It's much more complex and convoluted to try and explain it any other way.

  13. Yeah that kind of thing is bullshit. It's like the cheaters are trying to out cheat each other

I think we should go back to good old vhs & post

I'll admit that half the reason I want WW back is because the Past song is dope as hell and Tee Lopes would make a sick remix of it. Also I want to see if the Mania team has the chops to make the concept of the stage fun. Stardust Speedway and Metallic Madness are basically all-new so it's not like they would have to follow the original design, after all.

Well, I think it's easier to just ignore the S3&K lock-on extras and just stick with 'Chaos Emeralds' like the rest of the series, but yeah I get what you mean. ;) I'm happy for Super Emeralds to have been a thing, and I'm glad Mania had solved a quite age old debate either way.

  16. Please don't take this as malice but it has to be said: This is exactly why you don't preorder a digital title. Shit like this DRM fiasco coming out of left field.

Some may remember me saying about a month ago that there was no real benefit to preordering Mania. Well now on top of that, there is also a detriment.

I don't want anyone to misinterpret my tone here. I'm not jumping up and down singing "I told you so" or any of that. It's an unfortunate problem and I feel bad for anyone whose experience with Mania is damaged by it. In the future though, I'd like to reaffirm my stance on cautioning against these kinds of preorders.

  17. Other than some kickstarter stuff, I don't think I've preordered any digital game in years. The only reason I did Mania was because I had the money at the time and it was on a discount. Since that couple of bucks is really useful lately, and the only reason I would likely be able to get it at all before Christmas, I decided to take the plunge.

There are really just two reasons I'm pissed about the PC DRM.

One, I swear Denuvo screws with my performance. I've run some pretty intensive stuff on both my laptop and desktop, with little to no issue. But when I look up the occassional game I have trouble with? Denuvo is always included with it. I haven't done a ton of testing, so it could be correlation without causation, but it's enough that I won't even install most games with it, unless there's some sort of online feature already. (something other than Leaderboards that are always cheesed anyway)

Two, I bought this game for PC over my PS4 for one reason. Mods. This is a game made by a group of devs who cut their teeth on fangames and hacks and mods. Even the Sonic CD rerelease has allowed for some minor modding without too much hassle (I've mostly just done some OST swapping of tracks, but I've seen decent sprite work). That this one would include DRM that not only has a bad reputation for potentially causing performance issues, but goes against the very nature of how it came to be is just. It feels like some sort of sacrilege.

If I could refund it, I'd be a little less upset, but the very nature of the thing just makes me uncomfortable in a number of ways.

The way SoE has been handling it, on the other hand, is a whole 'nother kettle of fish, and makes me angry in a different fashion.

Just finished my first run-through (Sonic & Tails, PC version) - very impressed! = D

Loved the game overall - presentation was great music/graphics-wise, and the level layouts seemed well-designed - having just completed a run-through of Sonic 3 & Knuckles with a friend, I have to say some of Mania's layouts have a better flow to them than levels like Carnival Night or Sandopolis. Titanic Monarch Act 1 is gigantic, though - only level I actually got a Time Over on, though I'd nearly beat the mid-boss by the time it happened...! Loved most of the bosses, though found Flying Battery's main boss quite unintuitive at first; took me a while to figure out what I needed to do in order to actually hit him! Titanic Monarch's end boss felt suitably epic, though wasn't the hardest boss in the game IMO (mind you, I wasn't going for a no-damage run - might be more difficult if you're trying for that) - the one which gave me most difficulty was probably Oil Ocean's as even though it's obvious how to deal with it there's just so much going on! Lack of transitions between some of the levels was a shame, though - particularly as the ones that are in there have a lot of charm! Guessing this has already beed talked about ad infinitum, but hopefully the team will be given the opportunity to patch some in for the Zones that don't have them at some point in future.

Anyway, avoiding reading too much in here as I've not got all Emeralds yet - turns out I suck at the new Special Stages (both finding and completing them), so I only managed to get two on my first playthrough after finding only five or six big rings throughout the game...! = S Need to go back and do some exploring, haha. Will have to come back and digest other people's opinions once I've managed to get them all.

Had a couple of minor glitches - a minor collision glitch surfaced in both Oil Ocean and Metallic Madness which left me sunken into a platform I'd landed on by around 8 pixels, and after Stardust Speedway's main boss the capsule didn't stop descending once popped open, resulting in it pushing Sonic & Tails through the floor, still in their victory poses...! Thankfully they landed on a lower section of track, so no cheap post-boss death for me. = P

Overall a great experience - looking forward to digging deeper and getting all the Emeralds, as well as completing it with other characters. Definitely a great revival of classic Sonic - here's hoping the team get the chance to do an all-original sequel down the line!

I just finished the game for the first time as Sonic alone and with only four Chaos Emeralds. I had a lot of fun! I liked the game a lot more from Hydrocity onward (though Press Garden is still one of my favorite zones), but that may have a lot to do with how I stopped actively looking for special stage rings and just focused on getting to the end until I noticed some suspicious looking level design.

I had typed a lot more, but I'm pretty drowsy right now and don't feel like expanding on said thoughts. Plus, I want to get back to the game soon.

I will say that despite having stuck to this thread and even watching a few videos, most of the game's level designs and bosses were still a surprise to me. Kinda helps that I have horrid memory.

Also, the Drop Dash is a pain in the ass to pull off and I kept taking unnecessary hits because I kept either failing to pull it off or forgetting that I didn't have the Insta-Shield anymore.

I keep reading about people having trouble with the Drop Dash, and it seems wird to me, it really feels very natural. The only thing that bothers me about it is that it doesn't work if you are in mid air as a result of using the Spin Dash to climb a wall.
