This hit my YouTube feed this morning. https://www.hedgehogtechnicalinstitute.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=10#p10 aka remember Sonic Overture, the one with the music? It's this now, apparently. And it's pleasing.
I don’t believe that this is a direct continuation of Sonic Overture. This is a new fan game that aims to reimagine levels from multiple different Sonic fan games. I played this yesterday and it’s super fun. I also thought it was cool how eggman’s robot references the scrapped “eleven” character seen in the Sonic 1 concept art: https://twitter.com/sawhane25/status/1672868887841452032?s=46&t=S0_YkQ8TRA2Bk54XvKgWfw Speaking of referencing fangames, does anyone recognize the level at 7:45 that sonic runs through during the credits? Is that from another fangame or is that original to Legends?
A fangame that wants to make a complete game out of the too-many great one-level demos we've got over the years is a great idea. Launching it with merely its own one-level demo is comedic. I hope it can escape the fate of its forebearers because of course it looks great. I just need more before I get excited. We know how this usually goes.
I believe the character's name was actually "Thirteen", but either way it's really cool to see him referenced! Very in-line with what Overture was doing.
Wait, what specifically reminds u of mettrix? Is it one of the pictures shown in the slideshow, the final location shown in the credits or something else? Edit: Actually, I think the level shown during the credits is bronze lake zone from mettrix
Lead dev here! I'm actually very surprised to see a topic on Legends appeared on the site, this close to the demo's release to boot! (We released it on the 23rd, or 24th for people outside the US thanks to some SUPER last-minute snags) I hope people are enjoying our little homage project, as a ton of hours were sank into creating this portion of the game alone. To get some answers going, let me start by saying that no, Legends is not a new incarnation of Overture in any capacity. The least it does with the title is adapt some of the game's concepts into the story of Legends (i.e. the usage of the "Phossil" powersource, as well as the personality of their incarnation of the prototype rabbit character). Second, the Zone that appears during the credits sequence is actually the once-Knuckles exclusive "Bronze Lake Zone" from Project: Mettrix! I'm glad to see someone had already pointed out its capsule also made an appearance right before the SGZ2 fight, as it was done as a piece of foreshadowing to the zone itself. Zone screenshot: Spoiler As for beyond the demo, we're currently still ironing out a few bugs and tiling errors encountered in the demo and will be releasing that soon alongside having a proper launch page for the project. Other than that, we've already began work on other aspects of the game. A "Demo 2" is currently not in the cards, however. Our priority now lies in getting more aspects of the game done first, rather than obfuscating core gameplay elements for another specialized demo, which we had already done with the Alpha Demo currently released. I hope this sheds some light on a few things here and there and I will be happy to provide progress updates here as well as they come along!
Hey, so when I said Yeah, I kinda lied. We're taking an updated version of the Alpha Demo over to the Chao Games Showcase over on Hedgehog Technical Institute on November 15th, with the inclusion of an extra act in the form of Panic City Zone from 2006's Sonic Utopia. This will actually be the last bit of playable stuff we'll be sharing publicly, though. We're going to spend the rest of our time on getting the first half of the game done and release that next as "Chapter 1" (Or "Legends A", as we call it internally) so we can give everyone a portion of the game out in advance and not be stuck in waiting hell thinking the project's cancelled. Think of it how Sonic 3 split itself in 2, only without McDonald's getting in the way.
Love to see y'all breaking the one-level curse, and in fine fashion. I'm not familiar with Utopia but this is looking tight.
I'm really excited to see that Sonic Legends is evolving more and more. Having a new demo is honestly refreshing, and I am totally loving those Tails sprites! Awesome work!
I haven’t played Utopia but the city level, and the original Utopia, look awesome! Great work! In that footage of Utopia is Sonic using a fire boost/power up? If so will that ability be incorporated into Legends (Maybe as a new elemental shield)?
We did consider adding in what is referred to as the "Fireball" ability as barrier ability, but we weren't really sure how to go about it. The Flame Barrier itself felt balanced enough that it'd probably throw the player off completely if it were to suddenly shoot you diagonally downwards, rather than horizontally straight. That said, we have been thinking on adding a new Barrier type post-CGS that would have its active ability be for a diagonally upwards direction instead, rather than diagonally downwards, though this requires some additional drafts to make sure it can work side by side with the S3 Barriers. Some other powerups are also in the process of being implemented, as they couldn't in time for the Alpha Demo, but that'll have to wait for another time! Since I'm here, have a proper clean screenshot of PCZ itself, since the trailer can get a bit blurry from the constant movement. Spoiler
By the way, Scarly, I just wanted to ask, but what happened to Sunset Shore? From what I can tell, I think you guys either probably removed it with Sunrise Gate because the zones were too similar, theme and name wise, or you guys were going to use the zone for a later portion of the game.
Sunset Shore has been scrapped from the game completely. We had used it back in the Mania version mainly because Nexus/RSN means quite a lot to me (not to mention the environment the characters warp into is aptly titled the "Nexus Dimension" in direct reference to it) and I wanted to pay respect to it by having the zone be the opener, but ultimately Sunrise Gate was a better fit to open the game on. That said, this doesn't mean this is the last of Nexus you'll see in Legends, but that's for another time
I did. It's wonderful. I'm sure there's extra bits of polish that can be done here and there, but uh yes, big fan. Though I always was of Sunrise Gate's music. Interested to see where this goes. Hopefully the answer is "somewhere", and isn't abandoned like the games you're paying homage to.
Damn, I just LOVE when people go extra mile to polish their fangames. The demo was excellent, really enjoyed it and looking forward for what you have in store for the future.
My sentiments exactly, bless y'all for letting Sunrise Gate 3's music live on. Probably the best First Level Zone music in any Sonic game, period. Rest of the demo made my heart sing too, visually it's everything I want in a Sonic game. I looove his sprite and those gorgeous, expressive, fluid animations. Level design is flowy and fun as well, only sour note was Panic City being all-too-short in general but I'm guessing that was demo-deadline-related. Please get this one over the finish line, it's really special and I can't wait for more.
